The final poll makes sense in that it's just like most of the CFP rankings when viewed in hindsight; they make no sense. I don't think the folks behind it are necessarily doing a bad job... it's a lose/lose scenario if you are trying to make a CFP be accurate and truly represent the best team. If that happens, it is because of chance merging with intention.
Seeing last night's game and the resulting rankings today is a good check - reminding us to enjoy each game for what it is and not expect the larger NCAA system to mean anything; it doesn't.
It has been obvious for years that if we rank high in the system, we can emotionally justify our "place" whether it is earned or not. If we rank low, we are more likely to be critical and see the incongruities that always exist. CFP exists solely to boost media contract dollars and thus program values. It is obviously imperfect and matters only what fans allow it to matter. Playing a great season, having the most exciting/entertaining games possible, and winning that bowl game are what should matter to a program. The Vols had an incredible season! Last night's game and even this poll hurt the stock of the CFP and the AP poll. Most football fans are smart enough to see them for what they are... advertising conduits.
For the SEC, the sooner the NCAA becomes irrelevant from a media contract/dollar standpoint, the better... maybe. In short, get lost CFP. Go Vols!
