Five-star SG Anfernee Simons visiting this weekend

Good. If Pons was overheard *****ing about his lack of playing time, maybe it was in French.

What’s the deal with Pons?

He was supposed to be an athletic freak who could score.

Is he not physically or mentally ready?

Weird situation.

Too raw and roster is stacked ahead of him.

Say what you want but Barnes has done one hell of a job with this roster

I think he’s a good example of what my stance has been on Barnes since early on...

Pons & Johnson are the 2 highest ranked guys on this team iirc, add in Kwe Parker to the discussion and you’ve got the 3 highest ranked guys Barnes has signed. Yet none of them have played meaningful minutes and to this point have been unable to beat out the developed and experienced 3 stars in front of them...why? This team just beat what is on paper probably the most talented team in the country in UK, why is that? The experience and development of our sophomores and juniors compared to their freshman?

Now devils advocate is this...ok we may be a 19, 20 or even 21 win team that gets a 6 seed in the tourney, but imagine how good we would be if those developed 3 stars started out as 4 stars? That is enticing and I get it, but lots of questions...do those guys play with the same effort as these 3*? Do they put in the extra work to develop like these 3*? Do they respond to the tough coaching? Do they stick it out or do they transfer when they aren’t getting minutes?

Barnes had to build a foundation, and he did that with lower ranked guys...by all accounts he’s looking to add more talent out of the gate, so maybe he continues to model of developing guys but these guys start with more talent? In 2017 he added Pons, his highest ranked guy to date. 2018 could be Simons or Moore, both higher ranked than Pons. 2019 he has already added Top 125 commit Gaines, appears in good shape with Top 75 DJ Burns...there has been a lot of complaining about the recruiting first 3 years, but I think seeing what happened results wise in the first 3 years at Mississippi State, Auburn, Alabama is an example that maybe Barnes way of rebuilding is just as good or better?

That’s an honest question imo...Alabama and Mississippi State hired coaches the same year we hired Barnes, Auburn hired Pearl the year before....Barnes has coached 78 games at Tennessee...

Barnes: Currently 10-4(1-2) Overall 40-38(15-24)
Howland: Currently 13-2(1-1) Overall 43-35(14-24)
Johnson: Currently 9-6(1-2) Overall 46-36 (19-20)
Pearl(thru 78): Overall 36-45(19-30)

Obviously the other 3 coaches have recruited better than Barnes, but through the same number of games can anyone convincingly make a case that those schools were in a better spot going forward than Tennessee?

Good post

The SEC is light years better than before so all those coaches can't succeed at a high level but the conference is climbing quickly

"Obviously the other 3 coaches have recruited better than Barnes" - this may be the crux of the debate. Without an appreciable different w/l record in the 4 programs over the past 3 seasons, who's to say Barnes has been "out recruited" other than the recruiting services? If Barnes was given the roster of any of the other 3 teams, would his record be appreciably different? I'm not saying it would or wouldn't, but I like the current lineup myself. If they get/stay healthy and continue to jell as a team then I like Barne's group against any of the other 3 this season and it's still a young roster. UCF just beat Auburn in fball and the recruiting service worshipers would have said it was an impossibility because Auburn had much higher ranked players. Maybe the recruiting services don't really have the expertise you guys give them credit for?

The guy who gave the CB to UT is has gotten 14 of 19 correct predictions right this year so far

The fact he has said he would like to take a couple visits, but has now said multiple times he doesn’t have any set or any definite schools he will visit is a positive sign to me...makes me feel like Tennessee is clearly his leader, our biggest competition is probably the NBA.

I hope he comes here, but the last projection I saw was the 15 - 20 pick. I'm not sure why he is not going pro. Why risk injury?

I think the best projection I’ve seen is 20, some day late 1st round and some say 2nd round...Stoked put out all the numbers previously but unless you are guaranteed a lottery spot then the money and contract is not nearly as good. My guess is if he gets a lottery promise he will go, if he doesn’t he enter college...the issue with that is theoretically he could drag that out into April or May leaving us without many options.
