For those who regretted the Butch Jones hire.

I agree with this. The recruiting part is great but Dooley could recruit (see Patterson). It's what happens on the field that matters but that starts in the off-season and he seems to have the team believing.

Boca, is this your glass half full or half empty version?

Expected answer: "realistic"

Note: Sorry, couldn't help myself LOL

OK. But it happened on Dooley's watch. Has Jones recruited all the commitments or has his staff been involved?

I wasn't debating the fact that Dooley wasn't the head coach, but Hinshaw was his primary recruiter.

It's funny that every decision this football program has made since the firing of Fulmer has been the wrong move and plunged us further down the abyss. Butch Jones--and if I'm honest I'd say that I wasn't excited nor did I have any kind of knowledge of the guy outside of knowing that he coached at Cincinnati.

Butch has sold me that he can recruit--he's the personable CEO type that we need to run this program...he's shaken the hands and kissed the babies...now with all that said I do have a set number of wins I'd like to see ONLY because I think it's realistic. 6 or 7 wins and a bowl game should be the goal. We aren't bare talent wise but we have just enough.

You can feel a momentum shift with Butch on board---I mean let's remember this is a guy that has not coached 1 game here and has no record other than what he did in the past and he has 12 commitments for next year...and we are still in May people!

I'm not always negative. I just don't pump sunshine in the middle of the worst stretch of UT football in my lifetime.

I guess my point was whether or not Jones was the primary recruiter for TKjr and Hurd. I don't know. That's why I asked.

I came in neutral glad we had avoided hiring another Dooley like guy but disappointed to miss out on Gundy, Strong, and Gruden. However given what he's done so far I am completely overjoyed and a true Butch believer.

He has proven he can recruit but I'm going to wait to make my mind up completely until the season is over and I'm not worried about wins and losses.

I support the team always. If CBJ can bring us wins, I'll support him. Early recruiting looks nice, but verbals mean very little. Until February comes around and LOIs are signed, it's all just window dressing. I want Butch to succeed, but we all know you don't always get what you want. I'm ready for football season. The season will show us what kind of coach he is.

It says Kelly by Martinez and Hurd by Thigpin on 247.

I knew a guy that said I hope I can fix the problem, but never quiet got there. I know a guy that said, "thank you for letting me deliver a winner to you" and he did. Thank you CBJ

If this season is a rough one like I think it will be and CBJ still gets these kids to keep their word and sign with the Vols then I will feel a lot better. My biggest fear is these kids will start to sing a different song when the season starts and we start losing games. Other teams will start to negative recruit and say that the Vols are still a losing program and try and get these kids to switch schools. Now if Butch can keep these guys and get more then I think we may have something special. We will see.

Todd Kelly

Jalen Hurd

But Jones gets the credit, right? I'm not saying he shouldn't, because a head coach is only as good as his staff and they're all part of the same goal as stated by a former UT coach:

"No head coach can be better than his staff. Show me a winning team, and I'll show you a group of assistant coaches." [Johnny Majors]

The true test will be after October and mental make up of the team

I agree. That's what happened last year. UT was in games against UF, UGA, Miss St., Bama for a half, and USCjr. By November there was nothing in the tank.

This year's schedule is pretty similar with the addition of Oregon, ON THE ROAD! What's going to happen by the time Bama rolls around? Will there be any fire?

Yea I know, but it just seemed like a good time to give you a jab and have a laugh lol.

I do understand your "realistic" approach, and you know that I agree with a great deal of your posts. I don't consider myself a sunshine pumper, I just hate that the last few years have brought such a defeatist attitude to such a proud football/athletic program.

Yes, we may have struggles this year. But, I just have to believe that being a VOL still means something. As you have stated, Dooley and his staff fared well recruiting talent...SEC talent, but couldn't' coach them, or keep them from quitting.

Do we have a lack of depth? Possibly/probably.

Is it fair to hope, if not expect, that the right coaches, systems, and attitudes can not only improve current starters but also make viable players or contributors out of Dooley's underachievers? Certainly.

I'm not saying we're going to win the SEC East this year, but (insert curse word here) !!!, this is still Tennessee and I am NOT going to say we won't or can't either!

***Not flaming you at all Boca, just an attempt to show a "Hopefully Realistic" spin on the situation my friend.

The team last year packed it in before they played a bad Missouri team

No worries. It's all good! :good!:

If the team takes on Butch's persona, you'll see a teal that plays hard. Give me a coaching staff that prepares well and team that plays hard and I'll take our chances and be satisfied with the effort.

That's all we can ask.

When he didn't sign a 4* running back in February he got some flame...I don't KNOW that Butch will succeed but I have a confident feeling I haven't had for 5+ seasons...posters who don't have that confidence are just as right or WRONG as I am...I'm looking forward to this season...prove me wrong
