Friday weigh in thread (suns out guns out challenge 8/31/2025)

Nice job gentlemen. I need more inspiration and motivation, my schedule is wacky, I work long hours and a lot of overtime, I keep saying this week I’ll start back at the gym.
At a steady 235-240 I could get down to a solid 205-210.

My diet is the main issue, but working so much it’s always quick microwaveable carbs and fat, energy levels are there for me but it’s all in my head.

10% physical and 90% mental.

How much effort are you willing to put into feeling better? That's step 1. Cause the weight ain't gonna lose itself.

Step 2, figure out what your goal is. Just losing weight? Building muscle? Changing size in clothes? Energy to keep up with kids? etc

Step 3, figure out how to get there. Whatever works for you, that you can stick with. This part isn't easy, but once you figure it out you're gold.

Step 4, make the conscious decision to do it.

Good luck.

Thanks! Cook your lunches in Sunday and have them prepared for the week. It will prevent you from making bad choices. Good luck!! Just do it

There are a lot of excellent weight-loss books, but, if you truly want a fat-loss tutorial, there are probably none better than Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle: Transform Your Body Forever Using the Secrets of the Leanest People in the World by Tom Venuto. I will not provide a synopsis of the book per se, but, for the sake of brevity, will cite one point that Venuto emphasizes: “If you diet and you don’t do resistance training at the same time, you can lose between 30% and 50% of your weight loss in form of lean body mass. If you want to keep the muscle you have, you have to do resistance training. If you just diet, you WILL lose weight, but you’ll just become a smaller version of yourself – you’ll turn into a skinny fat person.”

For videos of interviews with Venuto, where he talks about his approach to fat loss, see:

For those of you who seek inspiration in your weight-loss efforts, but aren’t already familiar with their products, I suggest that you check out Tanita’s body-fat scales. See http://www.tanita.com/en/.

They work based on the principle of bioelectrical impedance, which, admittedly, isn’t the most accurate method for body composition. For the gold standard in that field, you need either hydrostatic (underwater) weighing or Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. Unfortunately, both of those methods tend to be available only at human performance labs or medical facilities. Bioelectrical impedance, on the other hand, can be performed in the comfort of your home; it works on the premise that electrical current passes through lean muscle and fat at different frequencies. Don’t worry, you will never feel the current.

If you choose to try this method out, be aware that bioelectrical impedance can provide a good gauge of relative change over time in body composition. However, it should not be considered a precise measurement of body fat. Furthermore, there are a few variables to consider for the purposes of getting the most consistent and reliable results from its use. Hydration levels definitely affect the statistical estimate produced by bioelectrical impedance. So, don’t hop on your body-fat scale immediately after a workout or, conversely, first thing in the morning, when your overall hydration level will be at its lowest. Try to take your measurements at about the same time each day, so they are taken under the same hydration level. Also, empty your bladder before testing.

Tanita’s scales certainly are more expensive than standard scales, particularly if you choose to buy a model with a host of “bells and whistles” on it. See, for example, http://www.tanita.com/en/bc558/. The model that I own roughly corresponds with this one: http://www.tanita.com/en/bc549/.

Alright, I'm back in this game. Restarted weight watchers since that seemed to work for me before. We also bought a Peloton bike because my wife loves spin classes, so I've used that the past three days. I peaked about 18 months ago at 276. When I went to my first weigh in with WW since rejoining I was at 252.2.

Wife just reached Lifetime again on WW since baby #3, so we're trying to motivate each other with staying in our points.

Reasons why: Change clothes sizes, Lose gut, More energy to play with my kids, and most importantly to set a good example for them.

I keep seeing the peloton commercials. My Nordictrack treadmill just died (bought it new in 2007 so guess I can't complain.)

So tell me more about the bike! If you have time that is. :)

It's literally a spin studio in your house. We love it for the convenience. Last night I got home at 5 and my workout was done by 5:45. And it kicked my butt. I was up at 5 today and had another workout in before I left for work at 615. The instructors are all uber positive and in the live classes they'll give shoutouts to people on the leaderboard, or if it's a milestone ride or your birthday or something like that.

There's about a dozen different instructors and they all participate in every levels of classes. I like this because I'm figuring out the instructors I like, and then can focus on their classes moving forward. They also have "beyond the ride" classes which are stretching, toning and strength training. They run about 10-14 live classes a day you can join in directly with their studio in NYC. There's also about 5,000 archived rides you can go back and do.

It's expensive, but for us it just came down to the convenience. If you haven't done a spin class, I would suggest trying one. I know you can go to their showrooms and do a class to see if you like it. Looks like the closest one for you is in Atlanta at Lenox Mall. If you decide to buy one down the road, let me know. I can give you our referral code which gives you $100 off accessories and gives us a $100 credit for accessories. We used a friends and it helped pay for the shoes. There's also a Buy Sell Trade page on Facebook for them where they go for typically between $1,500 and $1,800 with some accessories included. Key there is finding one close enough to you.

Since my weight watchers weigh in day is Thursday, I'm at 251.2. Down one. I'll take it since I've has a brutal head cold all week and haven't been able to work out.
