Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

It wasn't all about wins and losses but the 2 losses to the SEC newcomers Arky and SC both of which stunk, didn't help his cause.

There were plenty of UT fans and contributors who wanted to see Majors gone based on his performance. The NegaPhils are much smaller in proportion (outside VN) than were the NegaJohns after his flops in 1992.

Post whatever rumor you want about Fulmer taking Majors' job from him, but if anyone thinks Dickey was the only guy who wanted to see Majors exit, you have no sense of UT football history. There was mob of UT supporters who wanted that change to happen.

Yet, Majors should be remembered as one of the heros of UT football--for what he did as a player, first, and as a coach (16 years of service), second. He's about 73 years old, and I hope UT recognizes him while he's still alive.

didn't really hurt UF that we had a pick 6 shortly before. In fact, if I recall, they recovered nicely to beat us 59-20 after we absolutely quit in the 3rd quarter.

They were still ahead after the pick 6 and the gift wrapped fumble for a touchdown was a signal that the rout was on.

Not exactly. Even with the fumble return for a TD, we were down 15 and had the ball. It didn't look good, but the game was still manageable.

I think it's fair to criticize for not winning the conference title, but us getting to the SECCG is not exactly a blind squirrel event given how many times it's happened.

I'll be at the front of the line to criticize the team for not closing the deal and winning the game after getting there. I'm proud of the trips I've made to the SECG, but coming home with the t-shirt and a loss does get old.

Those bama losses killed me back then. Those days stunk. I would much rather be where we are now rather than then.

That was a huge momentum shift, though. Instead of driving the ball to get it for a chance to possibly tie, to going back down by 15 in the blink of an eye. I say that just deflated the team. I have no problem calling a spade a spade, but saying they quit is a bit too strong in this case. I don't think Tennessee could have scored point for point with them anyways, considering how inept the offense was. Without Berry's return, we only scored what... 12 points on offense? In the Bama game, we only managed 17. And we struggled all season to score in the second half. So maybe at that snapashot in time, it looked like we quit in the 4th quarter, but I would argue that it was a combination of a huge momentum swing followed by a precursor to what we saw the remainder of the season from that offense in the second half. I mean, heck, we struggled against the likes of USC and Alabama in the second half, also.

Saying the players quit is a bit strong.

And, it's not like you want to wear the T-shirt afterwards. :good!:

Your avatar would make one look good, but outside such drastic window dressing, they're mostly shoe-shine material (if you can bleach out all the orange).

Nobody owns us now like the Tide did back then. And the real embarassment was that their players used to say they 'owned UT': before, during, and after the games.

It's good to see this positive side of you Ras!

It was the determination that the team showed after the Alabama game in coming back from what looked like the living dead to win their way into the championship game for which they deserve some credit. The heart-to-heart talk between the staff and the players that followed the bama game must have had some effect.

The 2007 team played with a lot of character in the SEC CG, and but for a couple of plays, had the game won. It's that game that gives me the most hope for the 2008 season.

I'm also ready for the post-EA era.

I knew if we kept you around long enough, you'd eventually post something that well thought out. :p

Ras... getting lovin' from the Mods!

What's this board coming too? If only our offense can be this unpredictable this fall.

I buy the shirt before the game starts, then end up bringing it home and throwing it in a drawer with the tags still on it.

Maybe this year I'll get to buy it and wear it.

The way I felt about those Bama losses is the same way I feel now about losses to Florida.

Although we won the SEC in 1997, the feeling is closer to where I was during the Spurrier years versus Florida. We dropped 5 straight, then Fulmer beat CSS in 1998 and again in 2001 (helping to encourage the ole ball coach to move on to the League). Since we also beat UF in 2002 and 2003, the drought doesn't seem, and literally isn't, as long as that Bama streak (yet?).

Fulmer hasn't dropped 7 straight to anyone, EVER.

I don't know that you can call what Fulmer did "rebuilding" since we were winning 9-11 games per year when he took over. Fulmer definitely pushed us to the elite status that Majors never could quite achieve, but Majors did all the heavy lifting in restoring the program.

I could not agree more. I knew if we kept you around long enough that you would post something well thought out.

He's lost 5 straight to Florida, though. Still makes me just as sick.

Yep. And most of those were blowouts. That's why they felt more like 7 to me. Although they did it much longer, Bama didn't manhandle us the way Spurrier's teams did.

Wins per coach
Neyland 173
Fulmer 147

Fulmer needs 27 wins to pass Neyland.
That's 3, 9 win seasons. Unless Tennessee has another losing season Fulmer isn't going anywhere.

In 3 or 4 years he will probably retire at 60 or 61 after breaking the record. Then some new blood take over the program. Hamilton isn't going to make a move IMO.
