Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

Fulmer's induction means he had a stellar career as football coaches go. It does not mean any of the **** you typed in the post I am qouting. Nothing even close to it actually. I am proud one of ours made it to the top. He wasn't some hired mercenary either. Took great pride in that as well. I also take even greater pride in the fact that after all everyone has said about him that the football world has recognized his accomplishments for what they are (like I did already). That is good enough for me. :salute:

Thanks for the clarity!

Unfortuately, fans like me will always be labeled as haters by fans like you and it's as far from the truth as you could possibly be withouth lying

Making this argument is clearly indicative that you are in over your head in this debate. This is silly at best and extremely pathetic at worst.

1995??? Got beat 62-37 by Florida, no chance at NC
1997??? Got beat 33-20 by Florida, no chance at NC

YOu should move on . YOu're embarrassing yourself and the fanbase

I disagree! I think OP is correct in his assumption pertaining to facts he stated. I would also throw in there the 01 season (SECCG fiasco) though. Always laugh about the DVD they sell at bookstore for that season. Even funnier was the next year after the loss to Florida, the CPF show kept showing highlights from the 01 game.

I know I am done with it. I apologize for any insults I may have hurled at you. Believe me, it's not personal.

Phillip deserves the recognition he is getting with the HOF induction.

No hard feelings. I said some things too :p . Fulmer is one hell of a devisive figure though. A person my age grew up on Fulmer (I was 12 when we lost all those games to start the season in 88). Not hard to see where my loyalty lies. All Fulmerites breathed a collective sigh of relief when the annoncement came down last week. This debate may finally be over and all UT folks can now move on in a united manner. Wouldn't that be nice?

If Tennessee pulled off the upset of lsu in the 2007 sec title game, is fulmer still the coach?

I think so. He would have gotten better recruits over the off-season and at least a better a slight winning record in 2008.

But here's the thing, 99gator. We should have beaten you in '06 and we wound up losing like 21-20 at Neyland. I think if we had won that game, we would have gone on to win the SEC Championship, especially had Ainge not gone down with an injury in the LSU game, which caused us to have to play "OMG" Crompton in both that game and in the Arkansas game at Fayetteville.

If OMG Crompton had been coached and worked with instead of cast to the side till his senior year, he could have been much better. It took Kiffin 6 games to turn Crompton into a QB that was serviceable and ended up on the Redskins roster making $390,000 a year. Not bad for the OMG Crompton that people ridiculed and threatened.

I don't think they make it to Atlanta with a W against Florida. They did lose 3 conference games. Arkansas manhandled us, and Crompton did all he could and put us in position to beat LSU. Defense was just worn out and couldn't get that final stop. (or did, but a bad call on a fumble negated it).

Wouldn't have made a difference. He still recruited talent but he just couldn't develop it. Even at that, he couldn't recruit or wouldn't work as hard as he did earlier in his career. Case and point is Carnell Williams. He was originally suppose to be a Vol but ended up going to Auburn!

Does this mean everyone agrees with me? lol

I don't know that most of us ever disagreed with you totally. I for one loved CPF and was VERY sad to see him let go. However, I think he AND The UT needed a change. I think the way that change was handled, specifically by MH, sucked. I think that the Spliffin hire was good. Had he stayed who knows where we would be by now...probation or SECCG who knows.

I do know that him leaving 2 weeks before signing day and making CDD salvage that class and kicking most of CPF's upcoming signing class to the curb when he came in put us in VERY bad shape for CDD. I would like to see CPF great/not great issue put to rest. I am proud that he is a VFL. I DON'T want to see him coaching anywhere else. I couldn't pull against him. I am glad he is in the HOF. I am proud of his record because to the rest of the world, the record is what it is. Only the most ardent fans can actually recount with accuracy how he got to the record and point out the great times and the not so great times with detail. I am looking forward to this season. I don't think it is going to be the butt kicking season many think it will be. I think we will lose one that we shouldn't and probably win one that we shouldn't. I just wish that we could all agree that we are proud of CPF and that we are proud he is a VFL and an HOF coach. I wish that we could all get behind CDD and weather just one more year of questionable VOLS and then get ready to kick azz in 2013. That's just me and if that happened, this would be a very boring forum to read! GBO, VFL, JMHO!

Holy crap. I agree with everything you just said. Good post.

I don't know that the debate is over. Fulmer being elected to the HOF doesn't necessarily affirm him being a great coach. It simply means he had a great record while here at UT. Given all the talent he had for most of his tenure, he should have won big. Kudos to him for getting the talent, but can anyone honestly cite a game for which he outcoached another great coach through strategizing and adjustments?

I posted this a few times within threads but it keeps coming up.

I can't imagine how many times I've read that it's been 10 years since Fulmer won an SEC Championship. That's referring to the 1998 season. But, since the Vols have only played 9 seasons, it would be fair if you critics would stick to the facts.

There's no need to give up on the 2008 Vols before the season ever starts. And, if for some reason, we don't win the SEC this season, are you going to say it's been 11 years next year... and just keep being wrong until we win it again?

Please kindly adhere to the facts. Just to help with the math, here's how to count them.

1) 2007 (that's the last season played)
2) 2006
3) 2005
4) 2004
5) 2003
6) 2002
7) 2001
8) 2000
9) 1999 (this was the 1st season after the Vols won the national championship)

Fire away... 3 embarassing loses in 2007; can't forget 2005; and so on.

The 2008 team is about to reset the clock, so remember to tell your grandkids, there were only 9 years between championships and not 10... and it was not 41 years.. that was basketball.

Get ready to update this photo in 2008! Go Vols!

...there is no Fulmer debate dude, let it go.....

The food varies from game to game but there are two staple food groups at EVERY TAILGATE: BEER AND LIQUOR:)

We'll generally have pulled pork BBQ once a season and beef brisquet BBQ once a season

How could anyone ever disagree with those two staples? Okay he should have been fired four years earlier....please pass the BBQ sauce. lol

If my health stays okay, I will be at the Florida game and hope to meet you folks and say "hi".

Favorite tailgate items:

1. Burgers
2. Hot dogs
3. Cole slaw / potato salad
4. Jack daniels / coca cola
5. Miller lite---pint cans---extra cold
6. Home made desserts!

People... CPF backers and loyalist mainly....

can we please move on?

The guy got lucky.

He had a great DC, who was actually offered a job at a top SEC program after being let go, a great OC who was offered a job after he was let go, and players that broke records in the NFL like Manning and Lewis.

All you have to look at is the players he had in the 90's who are future NFL hall of famers and realize the guy never maximized the talent. Where are Spurriers QBs?

It is time to stop making the man seem like a better coach than he was. He won in the SEC when BAMA was down due to NCAA violations and such and the only other top team was Florida who he couldnt beat.

When other teams began playing well his record only got worse.

Let it go. All you have to look at is the fact that both his coordinators have jobs and he is still looking.

CPF was basically Dooley with a better staff and better players.

Starting another thread on him will surely shut them up.
