Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

The reason everybody has the expectation for Tennessee football is because of coach Fulmer and what he did!!!

Expectations? What he did? Check out his last seven year and see what he did, not to mention failing to win an SEC title for his last decade. Then, talk about fan expectations and how Fulmer met those expectations.

wel guess it's going to be a while then before we get back on top. Remember it was 31 YEARS in between the NC Fulmer won and Dickeys in 67'. It might be a long time before we see a NC again.

It may be. I for one don't expect a coach to win National Championships. It's not entirely in his control. Beat our rivals and win the SEC. You do that and the postseason will take care of itself. After that it's up to the voters. You did what you could. You can't control who the sportworld is crushing on.

You are about 65-70 years off in that assessment.

Why do you think expectations were that high? Because Fulmer won so many games early on. Then when things leveled off to what they were for decades, people got pissed and ran him off because he raised the bar.

The sad thing is that GA fans are no more sad/dissapointed than we were after the LSU and Auburn SECCG's. The reasons are different though. GA fans know they played a great game against a very dominating opponent that made for a better game than Phils last two. Fans knew Fulmer could no-longer win the big games so the "don't care" attitude took over. Fans were so tired of being beat by quality opponents that by the time of the 04 SECCG he was already on his way out. The (let downs) are what did it. Not close to repeating in 99 and 01 fiasco coupled with dismal record against Fla-just matter of time!

You are right. He is the reason for our success. He has become the victim of his own success.

I wouldn't call him a victim of his success.
I would call him a casualty of laziness .

I think he would like to redeem himself.
if the rumors of Strong are true I would much rather have Phil roaming the sidelines.

I think it's more that the Fulmer fans understand that success comes in waves. We were willing to be patient while others had a knee-jerk reaction that was over the top and now we are stuck in an even deeper hole than you all thought.

fulmer lovers are out in force today. should he be rehired and given a new huge buyout??

i promise you i am no fulmer lover. Look at my previous post in this thread.

I would rather have Fulmer 10-1 over Strong . I think that would be a disaster.

my pick would be Fedora.

Waiting over ten years for another SEC title (which never came), after 98 isn't a knee-jerk reaction and not over the top either.

You are sooooooo correct, just shaking my head over some of these folks that must think Neyland is a place where you can associate and listen to equines.

Every success Tennessee has had is built upon the solid foundation Robert Neyland built. Everything, from the expectations set to the very design of the stadium itself, has his mark on it.

We believe in high standards because he raised the bar high for himself and kept it there from the moment he set foot on campus as Kefauver and Barnhill's line coach to the twilight of his career leading the likes of Lauricella and Atkins to national prominence.

Times have changed. The formula for winning has not. We will get back to where we belong when we have a coach who buys in fully to what Tennessee represents and where it should be in college football.

Fulmer, once great, lost faith with the legacy given him. Kiffin and Dooley never had that faith to begin with.

I see it as a huge Fulmer dam that was starting to fall apart.

What was initially strong started to show cracks with players discipline and recruiting. Give it a couple of patches and things looked good for another year. Yet more cracks were starting and they couldn't be fixed. Poor recruiting, poor staff choices, and good coaches replacing the schlubs of the 90s were what caused his downfall.

I disagree with that. 2007 SECCG We lost to LSU by a touchdown. Do you remember that.

If so remember a certain QB throwing 2 int. in the 4th QTR.

If Fulmer wins that game everyone's arguement is out the window.

If you really want to blame someone for that game. Here's an idea for you. Call Eric Angie in the morning and tell him how mad you are that we haven't won an SEC championship. If he would have protected our football more maybe we might have won it in 2007.

Too bad he didn't. Real shame.

You have to take the good breaks with the bad. If Stoerner hadn't fumbled we probably wouldn't have played for a NC in 98.

Your right and had he we wouldn't have spent the last 5 years going threw this BS. Regardless of who's fault someone jumped the gun and now we are paying for it.

Not really.

I don't care what standards you measure it by. We are not better than we were 4 years ago. If you think we are well IDK. Somebody should have had a better plan so we didn't end up in this situation. Someone F'ed up. You have to at least keep us competitive.
