Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

Forget the top 25, all the polls did was to add five more also-rans to the top 20 and Fulmer failed to finish in the top 20, the long-time historical standard, five times in his 16+ years. As for getting a clue, I would admonish you to do the same.
This type of mentality is why we cant find a coach. CPF was well respected in the coaching circles and its no wonder why no one wants worth a flip wants the job. He gave everything to the orange and fans like you destroyed it. Coaches outside the family still think."they did that to their own HOF coach..what will they do me?"

He's more like the classic car or your first car that, when time to replace the tire, it was decided to go cheap and a budget tire was bought (Clawson) and when that failed, it was decided the car was junk and tossed away instead of buying a better tire. And of course lemons were bought after that, and now we're stuck with a junkyard.

And, yet again, if Fulmer's last years were "subpar", I'd hate to hear what you call most of the 60s, 70s, and 80s of the program.

Of course Fulmer's last years were subpar, the last 7 especially, subpar meaning below U.T.'s all-time winning percentage, subpar meaning no top 10 finishes, subpar meaning no BCS bowls. Interestingly, if one compares Fulmer's last ten years to Johnny Majors last ten years, one finds that Majors winning percentage was about five points higher than Fulmer's, fwiw. And, Majors had his share of detractors. So, Majors program improved after his rough start, and Fulmer's declined after his gangbusters start. One ascended and the other, Fulmer, descended.

Sorry, but as I travel and often discuss U.T. football, coaching inevitably comes up and the chips tend to fall. Repentance would be in order for the Fulmerites. But, there is no question that Fulmer is a decent and honorable human being. It is just that he was a declining head coach and now he isn't.

Again, these things go in waves. How long was Florida irrelevant? Bama? Notre Dame? UCLA? My god, you all kiss Meyers' ass, and cry about Fulmer losing to him, yet he lost 5 games his last year and jumped ship himself. Doubt he would've been fired. Want to know why big name coaches won't come here? Cause at the first sign of any trouble at all, they know they'll kicked to the curb instead of a chance.

And of course, the percentage is as high as it was largely because of Fulmer.

That isn't exactly accurate because the Majors/Fulmer tandem coached for about 33 years. Kiffin bailed and Dooley was the only one who was booted out going back to the mid-seventies. Majors was removed in a palace coup and Fulmer had declined and not really kicked to the curb, even though it was a termination.

Not for his last 7 years, even the last ten, based on historical winning percentage. I believe Fulmer's last ten years winning percentage was about .674 or close to that, which was lower than the all-time average. Of course Neyland's years produced the huge winning percentage numbers, losing only 31 games in 21 years.

Wait now you want to go after normal wins not big game wins.

UT fired Fulmer Cause he didn't win the big games.

Majors won the SEC 3 times. That's it.On top of that he only made it three time in his whole time at UT. So You saw the SECCG 3 times while he was here. Majors last 2 seasons 3rd in the SEC east both years. Don't forget Fulmer gave Majors a win against Florida and Georgia.

Fulmer 2 SECCG wins and a NC. He had 1st place in the SEC east 4 times from 2001-2007. Fulmers last 2 years 1st and 5th in 2008 with all the drama.

Guess you forgot

GO JOHNNY GO AND TAKE DeVoe!!!!

He did win the East two times but never progressed. Backed into those two games at that. Now, didn't he also (tie) for the East twice?

Quit saying backed in. He won the head to head. That's it. And make it worse, you said twice. In 04, there was only 1 loss. Quit downplaying it.

fulmer was a very good coach at one time. But, he stopped recruiting and started losing too many games and it was time to go. Hamilton made two terrible hires which is why he was fired. Now, UT will probably screw it up again with some coach in over his head.

It was NOT time for him to go. Impatient and the under 50 crowd thought it was time for him to go.

If he backed in, UGA backed in this year, USC did last year, Manning did, etc. So the only way to not back in is to go undefeated. And now we are back to why no big name coach will come here, since accomplishments will always be talked down to (and then fired) unless he goes undefeated every year.

Not exactly like but similar to Wisconsin this year. It wasn't that Tennessee was the best team it was more that the SEC rules allowed for TN to be in it due to the check downs. And, they BARELY got in in 04.

We're not better than we were 4 years ago.

Still doesn't mean we made the wrong decision firing Fulmer..

That's exactly what it means.

If we had improved, then you could make the case it was the right decision.

Since we crashed and burned, it was the wrong decision.

The worth of a decision is judged on the results.

"Barely got in in 04"? Are you as dumb as your arguments make you out to be? Tennessee went 7-1 in the conference that year, 5-0 in the division. How in the Hell is that barely making it in?
