Phil had a great run there is no denying that however when Phil was marching thru the SEC, his biggest challenge was against Spurrier who owned him. As the other schools improved their coaching staffs that journey was no longer as easy, Meyer owned Phil, Saban owned Phil, Spurrier was back in SC and was taking recruits from Phil. In the end Phil had a great run but today the SEC is not the SEC that Phil once owned.

Morning Gman....

Glad I found you in this discussion.. you last statement is so correct... Phil would be lucky to have a Dooley type record in todays SEC....Unless he improved by a mile over his last two years

Phil just didnnt or couldn't evolve.

Not even close........Fulmer..... He never built anything, I am not a Fulmer hater, but where we were tallent wise then over now is wide apart...imho

He built and rebuilt Tennessee into a dynasty. 1 year removed from the SECG.

Now best wishes to CBJ.

Fulmer's departure was the result of bad luck with quarterbacks. In 2005, his quarterbacks either were coming off injury and weren't fully recovered from that injury, or the starting quarterback's backup turned out to be a turd instead of the solid player he looked like he was going to be after the 2004 season. Then, 2008 had a starting quarterback who wasn't as good as pundits thought he would be. You have to give Fulmer the benefit of the doubt. While it was inexcusable that his recruiting class in 2008 was far below the standards he set in the late 1980s when he was the chief recruiter for Johnny Majors, he did lose Cutcliffe to yet another head coaching job at Duke. That might have hindered his ability to get some of the offensive talent that he needed in the short run.

Fulmer didn't build a dynasty in any way, shape, or form. In fact, all he did was for the first twelve or thirteen years he was in charge of the program, led the program to success seasons of 9 wins or better in all but two seasons. He continued Majors' pattern of success that he started in the 1980s with the 1989 campaign. That being said, Fulmer was the chief recruiter for UT during that time, so it's entirely possible that had we not had Fulmer around, Tennessee football would have never gotten off the ground from the mid-1970s when the program was almost as bad as it is now.

As in, he had trouble picking one and sticking with him.

We recruited well long before Fulmer got here. He wasn't the guy who "set the standard" for Tennessee football.

Fulmer has as much influence building this program about as much as all the Miami coaches who came after Howard Schnellenburger (spelling). There were good coaches after him but he is credited with building that program. Not Johnson, Coker or Erickson. Now, Butch Davis is credited with bringing it back and Coker ran it way down into the ground-much like Fulmer did but it just took Fulmer longer.

Well, he was "in charge of the program" 16+ years with five of those years where he didn't win 9 games, 94, 2000, 02, 05 and 07 and four years where he didn't make the top 20. In the first 13 years, four times he didn't win 9 games.

Sentiment would be different and all you Fulmerites would be in the right if he had been like Tom Osborn and built a program himself with consistent 10 win seasons and in the hunt for NC's and consistent conference championships and a 3 time NC coach with two other chances. But no, Fulmer was not this therefore he does not deserve to be elevated to that level! He is a HOF coach but no great!

will fulmer ever get another coaching job?

PF will be 63 on 9/1/13, out of football since 08, achieved his goal of HOF (one goal, the other goal(s), surpassing Neyland and winning 200 games, almost assuredly won't be met). How many Bill Snyder's are there after all. And PF doesn't want a rebuilding gig, rather a prime, loaded gig. Won't happen. But, some Fulmerites won't close the door so they can check back here in a few years for confirmation. All that said, I would pull for PF should he land somewhere else, just not here, enough destruction already.

Yet, again, you keep saying destruction. How about you actually go look at the records of UT from the 60s on. You'll see that everything he did in the 2000s is pretty much what happened in the history. You act like 1 loss happened every year, but it didn't. My god, you are dense.

Exactly the way non-Fulmerites feel about posters such as yourself.

That's fine. However, you all have NO response to the argument I just made. Because it is true, and you all just feel the need to piss on his legacy in order to make you feel better about whatever **** life you live.
