fulmer was interested in the UK job--did he get an interview?

Phil Fulmer weighs in on UK opening | Kyle Tucker – UK Beat

Seriously, if PF wanted the chance to coach Kentucky or some lower-tiered program it was there. I remember getting to meet and see Phil at the Georgia Dome for the NC State game...the feeling you got from the man was "I had a good run...but I'm done" and I feel firmly that is his current state of mind.

Seems to be a common feeling towards certain posters in this thread...

No one wants us > 50. They all want young, new...and how is that working for us again Knoxvols1? I wish CBJ nothing but success, but why did it come to this?

Lol-It's because he ran it into the ground! On a different note, I wish they had message boards around back in '92 so that we could compare Fulmers fireing to Majors. Then again, I'd probably be the one leading the anti-Majors threads.

I don't think anyone cares about how old the coach is, as long as he can still walk. People don't want Fulmer back because they don't think he'll be successful. Age has nothing to do with it.

Phil and Spurrier were the kings of the SEC during their hay days, Spurrier always got the best of Phil. Once the other schools upgraded their coaching staffs and recruiting became harder Phil was not winning the recruiting battles as much and the other schools began leveling the playing field.

Phil had a great run but he would not fare near as well in this conference as he once did, it also a reason why he has not been hired by another school.

Pretty much sums it up.

IMO. Thread should end here.

Sorry.....look at mosts of the posts on this thread. Game passed him by is my "favorite". They are all veiled references to his age. How did they describe Kiffin? Young, brash etc. etc. Well VN, the results are in. Go CBJ and turn this around.

But you're allowed to speak for the "younger generation"?

Funny how you do the very thing you attack him about.

I am not speaking for them, I am speaking to them. Wait until you are 50+..then you will understand what I mean. 75% of the posts talk of CPF's age as a minus.

It is a minus because it became obvious that he let the game pass him by in every phase.

He didn't recruit like he had in the past.
He was conservative to a fault.
He didn't get any real quality assistants for fear of them taking his job. Cut and Chavis were not going
to wow anyone as head coaches.

Fulmer kept his job too long. The horrible hires that followed do not diminish that fact.

I'm going to laugh my ass off if you fail one time in your job and you get fired. You'll probably whine and complain about how you never got the chance to get back on track and all that, and I'll just laugh and laugh because of your logic regarding Fulmer.

Please keep in mind that 99.99% of people that get fired do not have the luxury of a $6,000,000.00 buyout for not doing their job.

Keep in mind that buyout was after he earned a contract extension, not when you all claim he needed to be fired prior to when he was.

He earned a contract extension is a matter of opinion. It is more like Mike Hamilton was very loose with the University of Tennessee money.
Thanks to his brilliance, UT has to payout 6 million to Fulmer and 5 million to Dooley.

I suppose Dooley earned his 5 million?

One thing for sure Dooley left more SEC talent than Fulmer did but neither deserved that kind of buyout.

The Fulmer debate continues, to this day, on VN.

One place you will not find this debate is in the AD's office of any other FBS school.

Unlike some, they recognize the fact that Phil Fulmer is not a coach who can create, restore, or maintain a winning program. If they thought he could, they would bring the money. Serious money.

The fact that this thread is the only place where the "Fulmer Debate" continues says far more than any poster, this one included, can say about the subject.

It's over. Move on.

Go Vols.

And why was a bunch of that talent gone? That's right, the players wanted to leave after their mentor was canned. (And by the way, the likes of Hardesty, Berry, etc were better than what is here now. And they were brought in by Fulmer.) Such a shame that the eventual ACC player of the year wasn't here because the man he wanted to play for was no longer here.
