Fulmer Debate II

Read Bamacheats post's on the Fulmer subject. Then get back to me.

Nobody wants Fulmer. That's not bashing, that's fact. Even Louisville wanted Charlie Strong over Fulmer.

It's obvious to everyone that Fulmer had a great run because the SEC was down, full of Duboses and Donnans, and Fulmer had more talent. We all saw it while it was happening, knew why we were winning, and knew it had to change to continue winning.

SEC got better coaches, Fulmer "stayed the course" and got fired.

I never quite buy that argument. Dubose may have been an idiot, but he won an SEC title and Donnan was a Hall of Fame coach that was winning 8-9 games a year.

Now, I do think Richt, Tuberville, Spurrier and even Shula stopped their states from bleeding recruits and that had an effect.

Well, hell, i guess Spurrier sucked too, since he only won when the SEC was down, too.

Note: Bamacheats is on my ignore, so I responded to you.

What would you consider to be a successful coaching job?

Since we're down I'm glad all the teams whipping on us suck too.

That's proves the point further. We knew Donnan was an idiot, he's done. We knew Dubose was an idiot, he's done. We knew Shula was in way over his head, like Dooley, he's done. Nobody wants these guys, even with a conference title on the resume and 8-9 wins.

Fulmer is substantially better than those guys, but the fact remains, everyone realized that how and why he was winning was not sustainable. He "stayed the course."

A HOF coach with a NC on his resume that nobody wants. Wonder why?

Just not true. He got fired because he didn't play well with others; not because of results.

Hypothetically, if we go 10 years without making it to Atlanta, will you agree that firing Fulmer was the wrong thing? What about 15?

Nope, because the two events are mutually exclusive of one another. We went from 1969 to 1985 without one and I never thought firing Bill Battle was the wrong thing to do

If this is how you really feel this has to be the only thread you comment in because everything else is fine regardless if we lose every game & get embarrassed.

I'm now completely convinced that winning will be the only thing to curb the Fulmer talk. (Even then there will be some debate).

I was as hard as Fulmer as anybody on here in the end. My post record should prove it....but gotalmighty....Fulmer supporters romanticize the last four years of his tenure, and Fulmer bashers ignore the greatest modern era of UT football that he resided over.

He will never be the head coach here again, and he will never be the AD at UT. It is time to simply appreciate him as a former player and move on.

the question how much longer before the winning solves the debate

I have never had so many guys put words in my mouth regardless of the fact I've never even remotely suggested everything is fine.

Like I said, and it's a fact, the two events are mutually exclusive of one another. Believe me when I tell you I am NOT satisfied with the current state of our program, but I am excited about the potential given what Jones is doing on the recruiting trail. The only way we really get back to being nationally relevant is to fully stock this team with stud talent and adequate depth. We haven't had that type of roster since the mid 2000s. Any coach will tell you that success starts with having talent AND quality depth.

Like I've stated on NUMEROUS occasions, I respect the heck out of Fulmer for what he did here in the 90s. He's a great guy whose blood runs UT orange. There is no doubting his love of the University. I know him personally and like him, but that doesn't mean I am blindly going to dismiss the last seven years of his tenure as coach. That would be giving him a pass that it was ok to let the program slip into mediocrity. Yeah, we better in 2007 than we are now. I agree with all of you on that issue, but that's not the point.

Donnan caught fire at Marshall. He was mediocre at Georgia.

Yeah, those top 20 finishes probably got old for them during his last 4 years.

During the two best years of Fulmer's tenure, 97 and 98, Donnan was winning 10 and 9 games while playing in the same division as us and Florida. I'm not saying he was Nick Saban . . . but he wasn't exactly Sparky Woods either.

I think it was time for Fulmer to go in 2008, but I'll never get the mentality that some have that they need to minimize his accomplishments while he had it rolling.

It's because the only way the end of Fulmer's tenure looks acceptable is to compare him to Dooley.

I have a question for you. When Alabama has the next inevitable down turn in their program, are you saying Saban (assuming he is still there) will "let" it happen?
