Fulmer Debate II

We, idiotically, chose to hire the son of an overrated rival coach. The fact that a supposed great coach, Fulmer, got out-coached by any decent coach on a regular basis and was putting the program in a tailspin is irrelevant to that point.

Bet cpf still enjoys watching the tide lose even though they are in the sec cause he don't give a damn about the whole state of Alabama.

I am sure a lot of you already knew this, but in addition to running off Tahj Boyd, Kiffin apparently also "run oft" Bryce Petty, another Fulmer 2009 commitment.

For all the hype about Kiffin's first class, it was only 9th in the country. I am willing to bet had Fulmer stayed, we would have done better. I mean, heck, he would have had Bryce Petty and Tajh Boyd in the same class!

Kind of like Peyton Manning and Brandon Stewart back in 94...and no, I am not comparing Manning to either Boyd or Petty...heck, he HAS no peer...but Boyd/Petty sure would take second place to Manning/Stewart in UT history.

So let me add this to the debate....for all the hype about Kiffin recruiting I think Fulmer was just as good or better, even if he slipped a notch in later years. Heck, his 2007 class was no. 2 in the country and I think his 2009 class would have been just as good or better.

The firing was justified. The two hires that followed are the reason we have sucked so bad.

This is proof the firing was completely unjustified. The complaint against Fulmer was he couldn't win the SECCG; you only hire, therefore, someone who has proven they can win it.

We've not improved. We've regressed. Coach #3 is by far the best hire we've made yet, but he still has a lot to prove too.

No pro-Fulmer facts or opinions allowed.

EDDIEVOLHALEN = Gets it!!!!

I liked Fulmer and thought he was a great Coach especially at recruiting should he of had more titles, Probably so.
If you're going to fire a Coach with as many Winning Seasons as Fulmer at least HIRE somebody else who has proven they can win.

Probably not.. Look at his 01 claas. Davis, Houston, Tinsley etc. He was either recruiting busts or not developing the talent. Either way the program was spiraling downward under him!

This makes no sense. Just because the administration hired two bad coaches doesn't mean the firing was unjustified. (By the way, I am pro-Fulmer). I just don't understand that logic. Just because Dooley was bad doesn't mean that Fulmer was still the answer. That is not logical.

It just means that our administration hired the wrong person or wanted to do it on the cheap (although that can be debated as well). The first time around, they could have hired someone who had been successful at the college level- they just didn't do it.

He's saying that if you can't get anyone at least as good or better, there's no point in firing who you have (Georgia fans, pay attention). The argument isn't so much whether or not Fulmer deserved to be fired. The argument is was there anyone legitimately as good or better that we could have gotten at the time. Looking at Fulmer's career record and then looking at the coaching landscape at that time at who was available and who was sincerely interested in the job, I'd have to say probably not.

I think Fulmer deserved to be fired but maybe Hamilton should have "punted" in 2008. Waited another year to see if Fulmer could dig his way out of the hole he put himself in or if better coaching candidates came available the next season.

Ultimately Hamilton's "ready, fire, aim" approach to handling our football program is what cost us.

I agree with this except forthe wair another year approach. The 07 season was pure luck backing into the SECCG and he should have been gone before then!

Not if you don't have someone as good or better to replace him with! That was the whole point of my post and if you don't agree with that, you don't agree with the post. You don't fire a coach just for the sake of firing them. If you can't replace him with someone better, what's the point?

Also, I don't see how you think Fulmer should have been fired before 2008. 2005 was his first career losing season ever! You don't fire a coach after 1 losing season, especially considering the career Fulmer had had up to that point. He won 9 games in 2006 and 10 games in 2007! Whether or not we deserved to be in the SEC championship game that is irrelevant! We were there and came damn close to winning it against a vastly superior LSU team! As bad as 2008 was to everyone, keep in mind that if Fulmer is not fired, we DON'T lose to Wyoming and we end up 6-6 and going to a bowl! If we do that and end up wining a bowl and finishing 7-6, 2008 is not the disasterous season everyone now looks back on.

With all these top coaching vacancies I have heard that both Home Depot and Lowe's have delivery trucks assigned to deliver front doors to Phil hourly. He is so highly thought of from schools looking for head coaches that they have their coach search committees carrying battering rams with them to beat his front door down. They are that desperate to gain entry into his house and get ole Phil's signature on a contract.

I'll bet he has turned down twenty or thirty coaching offers within the past two years alone. I mean, we all know what a prize catch he would be for any of those schools that are needing a head coach. How come his name is never mentioned? Just don't understand that.

let it go, man.

Phil deserved to be fired..

Kiffin and Dooley didn't deserve to be hired..

the two have nothing to do with each other.

Yeah well I bet his replacements would have liked to have "backed into the SECCG".

Yep and to be fair, if you had replaced Jim Donnan, Ron Zook, or Mike Shula with Derek Dooley, things would have gotten much worse at those schools too. Lucky for them, they had a competent AD and fans who weren't moronic sheep.

It is reported that since both Home Depot and Lowe's are out of front doors Ace Hardware just delivered three front doors and four back doors to The Warden's house. This is in anticipation that the Louisville backers will descend upon his house and will not accept 'no' for an answer if/when Charlie Strong becomes the Longhorn head coach. The Texas people, alone, beat down eighteen front doors to ole Phil's residence. While the Texas folks were beating down the front door the Penn State crowd was battering the back door.

Ace Hardware, in an attempt to make Phil's house more secure, has delivered metal entry-proof doors. With more coaching vacancies opening up they are now worried about the windows. All these schools will stop at nothing to secure a top coach. The Vols just didn't understand what they had when they let him go. He can get a job anywhere. That is why so many institutions are rushing to him in an effort to convince Phil to take over the reins.

The scene in the streets leading to his home is downright frightening....is like watching a movie of people gone mad. A car of Texas boosters purposely rammed an SUV loaded with Penn State people trying to keep them from getting to Phil's house before they did. The SUV crashed into a fire hydrant causing water to gush fifty feet into the air. While the Louisville search committee was trying to beat down 'The Clapper's' back door another school tried to rush past them. Bedlam broke out with fist fighting everywhere. Lo and behold, here came the Tennessee Titan bunch....beating their way with sticks past the fighting Longhorns and Nittany Lions. They, too, are not going to be denied or outdone by some other team. With all the fighting, cursing, spitting, throwing of rocks and other objects the scene is one of desperation and sheer madness that escalated into outright rioting.

A coach like this is hard to come by, thus, the outlandish bedlam outside his residence. They all know Phil can get a job at any of the major schools and they want to get to him first. ESPN has reported that, for some reason, Fulmer hasn't coached anywhere since he left Tennessee. That is a mystery and they are fully investigating as to why. Stay tuned for further developments.
