Fulmer Debate II

I don't know Fulmer, but he played at U.T. when I was a student. I believe that he was one year behind me.

If I was in Fulmer's financial situation, there is no way in the world that I would move at my age to coach football, and give up any semblance of a normal life. When you get to be in your 60's and have worked for 40 years, most people don't want to pull up roots and leave family and friends.

I am not saying that someone who is 60 something doesn't want to work, but I would bet that few would want to move for a job that requires that many hours, and that much devotion.

I think he wanted the wins record at UT and that was it. I believe he would have only had three years left when we fired him. The fact he never took a coaching gig, position, coordinator, or head, makes me love him more. He truly bleeds orange.

The Anti-Fulmer crowd will claim he was never offered a position. They should know, they are never wrong.

Do you believe the Cleveland Browns hired someone else when ole Phil was right there available? This makes hundreds of coaches hired since The Good Ole Boys Club regime was overcame and The Warden was marched out of the prison atmosphere he created at UT.

You just don't know what to believe but some folks say the hangup with the Cleveland job, like all the others that fell through, was due to the buyout clause. Fill is so loyal to UT that he just didn't feel right receiving a big ole chunk of buyout money from anyone other than Tennessee. Reportedly, the Browns tried to get UT to agree to pay Phil's buyout, if necessary, but they said, "No thanks! We've already been took".

You're not gonna do it are you Lookin? Please say that you think Lane Kiffin, Charlie Weis, Tuberville, Orgeron, and Derek Dooley are better coaches than CPF. They all have jobs and your claim to fame is that Fill doesnt. So please, you seem like such an all football knowing guy, why dont you admit that all of these coaches are better. Once you do, the debate will be essentially over. You certainly can't prove it by their records, but you're so football savvy, if you will admit it, I will feel much better. Come on. Back up your BS.

Most do appreciate his accomplishments... but, he did not do himself any favors to show he still had it. Hence, the lack of a primetime offer for a HC position... this in spite of a willingness on his part to take one on.

Not too complicated to piece together... and does not require a membership in a anti-Phil club to understand.

Many are claiming Coach Fulmer wanted another head coaching position but simply no other positions have been offered. Could some of you who are seemingly so certain of this please direct me to any reports or supportive material for your claim. I am not interested in more hearsay and innuendo often used as fact here. Thanks.:hi:

Well its out there somewhere. Shortly after his dismissal, he made it know if the "right" HC position became available, he would like to be considered. In his mind, he was not finished.

Maybe someone will post that report.

he was done. washed up. he got what was coming to a past-his-prime head coach that stopped being motivated.

he deserves the hall of fame. he deserves the accolades. he deserves the wonderful memories.

he also deserved his walking papers.

Lol. Yeah and lose his money? I think not. And as a matter of fact he stated he was not interested in coaching. Just the opposite of what you posted.

Fulmer is set financially but he took the TV gig because he wanted to stay involved in the game and keep his face out there. He is very clear on this: If the right opportunity comes along, he wants to get back into coaching for the 2010 season.

“I absolutely want to coach again. I’m young and I feel young,” Fulmer said. “Given what we accomplished at Tennessee I still think we have something to contribute. We had a lot of success at Tennessee.”

I spent a lot of time visiting other camps. I went up to Ohio State in the spring and had a great visit with Coach Tressel. I’ve been to the Dolphins and the Giants, obviously the Colts. Spent time with those guys. I’ve taken all of my organizational stuff, and each place I’ve been to, I came back with pages of notes. But I’ve taken all my organizational stuff and worked on it, updated it. My secretary is in the process of typing it. I put a list of potential staff people together. So, you know, preparing myself for if the right opportunity presents itself.

I think that one thing that really hurts Fulmer's reputation is the slow decline of the program after Cutcliffe left the first time, the rise of the program when Cutcliffe came back, and the further decline when Cutcliffe left again. Add to this the undeniable surge in the Duke football program, and it gives one the impression that Cutcliffe was the reason for a lot of Fulmer's success at U.T. Without him, who knows what Fulmer's record would have been?

I agree. Cut's coaching ability is without question. A coaching staff is a dynamic entity and the loss of any one member can upset the proverbial apple cart. For better or worse, the ship could not be righted quickly enough to satisfy the powers that be, fans and AD alike. Coach Fulmer failed to find the right "coach" to replace Cutcliffe and that hurt him.

The good news being that as soon as UT is playing competitive football this thread will disappear. Until then, I suppose we are stuck with it. There are too many of us that remember what "your national champion is clad in orange" sounds like.
