Fulmer is still the best name.

Looking back getting rid of fulmer was our best move but we did it too early we should have had a coach in waiting that could step in like holly was for pat

As much as we love Fulmer, he's the one who started the downward spiral for UT.

So KIFFIN and Dooley years are on Fulmer and not them? He may have started a trend but its all on Dooley and Kif. Their choices are the cause of where we are. You can only blame Phil for so long.

arkansas almost hired him last year and might this year , kansas looked at him or was it k state . synder went back and look what he has done .pittsburgh took a look and i realize he didnt get those jobs but thats their loss. i know his record with cutliffe was better with him . oh yea ky just might hire him ? why is it so hard to see what this man did for the vols and the time he spent as a vol and some of and your jokes with the doughnuts , the gravy show no class !!. he was not the reason for the downward spiral . again its the S.E.C and you win some you lose some but we won more with him .. so lets go get another rock star and see what that does for us . we have to get out of the business of hiring and firing coaches or we will be vandy ,ky !!

For those of you wanting Fulmer back, look at this stat and answer this question. In Fulmer's final 4 years, '06-'08, his teams went 5-14 vs. top 25 teams. Do you really think those results will return UT to national prominence?? FWIW, I didnt tally bowl results. I know at least one bowl UT won during that span was against a top 25 opponent.

Most of his winning took place on the front end. When the league got better we were going the other way. He had a chance to fix it and couldnt make it happen.

You don't get paid a lot of money to "win some, lose some." There is a reason nobody has hired him.

Also, y'all say he wasn't good enough for schools to offer him, but no one really knows how serious he was about schools. He was basically getting paid to not be involved with the grind. Why do people take vacations? To get reenergized for whatever job a person holds. His payments are about to stop and 4 years is a good time period to step back and get refreshed and come back. Look at Snyder for that. No one knows 100% what results Phil would bring us if he came back and anyone who thinks they do, good or bad, is ignorant

I understand what you are saying.

We still have to go back to Fulmer.

If he had not let the team fall so far talent wise, he would still be the coach or when he did leave the next coach would have had more talent to work with.

Fulmer started the downturn, Kiffin jumping ship in the middle of the night that close to signing day hurt the program. Dooley has done a good job of rebuilding the talent but he was in way over his head as a head coach in the SEC and has lost the team.

The team does have more SEC level talent than it has had in several years, that is due to Dooley. The next coach will have players to compete with from day one.

Bill Snyder is a much better football coach.

He's throwing his name into the ring for every single vancancy. Kansas, UConn, South Florida, now Kentucky...none of them want him. There's a reason for that, but our fans just don't seem to get that memo.

Why do we want our new coach to be an assistant from Fulmer's crappy staff?

And how many of those did he actually push for? Kansas was the only one. He said he wanted to come back to a school where he wouldn't have to rebuild. All of those except Kansas at the time were rebuilding projects.

All of them. No, he said he wanted to go somewhere that's committed to winning championships. Since most of those places laugh in his face, he's gotten so desperate that he's now talking about how places like Louisville/Kansas/Kentucky/USF are actually the "committed" places he was talking about.

Don't believe me?

“I made a significant point when I got out of coaching that I’m looking for a program that’s committed to winning and being the best they can be. Certainly South Florida fits that profile."

When asked whether he had inquired about the opening, Fulmer said, “Not directly I have not.”

When I asked if he would, Fulmer said, “I may. It just depends.”

ON UK’S COMMITMENT TO FOOTBALL: “They certainly seem very committed from the standpoint of fan loyalty and resources to build a football program.”

And they still don't give him the time of day.

I am not sure why some people choose to only to remember the bad and not the good he did for the program. There are 2 sides to this. Now not saying bring CPF back, but he gave us a NC in 98' and when was the one before that 51'. So I can see how we were contending for a NC every year. At what point did you all get so spoiled Fulmer era!!!!

I agree. I remember Fulmer and respect what he did for the program. I also remember how it ended. I don't believe he would be a good choice for us now. Many other coaching vacancies have felt the same way since he has been gone.

To sit there and say he pushed hard for every opening is stupid. Why would he push for these small schools when he would make more staying away? He wanted and wants a situation where it's not building from ground zero. He interviewed for Kansas and obviously wanted USF because he and Vicki go to St. Pete almost every other weekend.

I remember the end also. I also remember my son running in and telling that Fulmer was gone my reaction was " We just jumped out of the pan and into fire."

My first game was in 91' against Vandy. My mother-in-law gave my wife and I her extra tickets. Now my mother in law hasn't missed a home game since 72'. My wife grew up with UT football from birth and I remember her telling me in the mid 90's how bad it was in the mid 80's.
Talking about how the stadium was empty. People want to bring up all of Fulmer loses to Florida, but what about Alabama. I remember at one time Tennessee could lose every game just beat Bama. By the end of the Fulmer era we had become spoiled. Now look where were out.

I also believe that in any sport teams push each other to get better. I think the the rest of the league finally caught up to Fulmer (exception of Spurrier that guy just had CPF number). But I believe Fulmer would have bounced back fine. One of the big problems wasn't Fulmer but, Hamilton. And for those saying that Fulmer backed in to the SEC Championship in 07' is a fool. Every team has backed into a game. Look at Alabama this year. Everyone knows if you lose a game just 1 you're going to need a little help to get in. It's college football in the SEC
there are no guarantees.

To sit there and say he pushed hard for every opening is stupid.

He has given interviews "expressing his interest" for like 8 different jobs. How often does Gruden do that? Never, because he doesn't need to keep his name in the news. It's already there.

Why would he push for these small schools when he would make more staying away?

Because "these small schools" are the only ones that will even talk to him. He would easily make more as a college head coach than he makes at CBS.

He wanted and wants a situation where it's not building from ground zero. He interviewed for Kansas and obviously wanted USF because he and Vicki go to St. Pete almost every other weekend.

Why Louisville?

He wanted and wants anything he can get, which after four years, is absolutely nothing. And people still want to hire him back here.

If he was truly desperate to have a HC Job, he coulda easily got a non-AQ school gig easily.
