Fulmer Picking Up Steam/Schools looking at Fulmer?(merged)

I don't have the 90s schedules and season records in front of me nor do I care to search for them, but I'm betting that during UF's 4 year run they were blessed with the benefit of playing a down LSU program while we played Bama every year.

LSU had a decent year run from 95-97. They were horrible otherwise.

Alabama was great from 93-96, although some of those wins got forfeited, and horrible afterward, save '99..

I think Minnesota State would be a better place. And maybe Jerry Van Dyke can be his assistant coach..oops, I mean, Luther.

If the SEC East is determined by the results of only the games played between SEC East opponents, Tennessee doesn't rep the East, because we weren't the best team from that division.

And the great thing is that the season you tout as phenomenal involved miracles to beat the likes of Vandy, UK, and South Carolina, beatings from two .500 teams, and getting absolutely taken advantage of by Florida.

And it was a better season than Florida or Georgia were able to do with more talent in 2007 in the SEC. Still a great season for any Vol fan not obsessed with hating Fulmer.

Yeah, losing the SEC east is the same as winning it. Yup.

Both options are losers. You either win the CONFERENCE or you don't. Fulamanure didn't so he's kicking it at the house and can't get a sniff at a job.

If he couldn't MAINTAIN a championship-caliber team at a place like Tennessee - only 10 years removed from a NC (when he was fired), this fanbase, our facilities, our brand, our money, conference membership, etc. - what in world would lead someone to believe that he could REVIVE / ESTABLISH it somewhere else, much less at a vastly lower program with entirely lesser resources in those same areas?

Nobody wanted Fulmer after 2005. That hasn't and won't change. And as the expanse of time that he's out of coaching increases, the chances become even more remote, and requiring a greater level of idiocy to keep believing otherwise.

You're better off believing something equally unlikely, but at least more plausible - like the character of a recruit being of greater importance than their athletic ability. Or President Obama will be re-elected. At least those theories are silly enough to mock.

My point is that just because you win a division, doesn't mean you were the best team in said division.

'07 is a prime example of this.

LSU had a decent five year run from 95-97. They were horrible otherwise.

Alabama was great from 93-96, although some of those wins got forfeited, and horrible afterward, save '99..

Suddenly 9 - 3 is a decent run (1997).

Who knew?

And their 10 - 2 year featured 40 pt losses to Florida and a shut-out by Bama.

Who knew?

Thanks for the clarification, kpt. I always love it when the GoF make my arguments for me. :hi:

I described it as decent. You would have described it as great. Compared to the horrific season they had under DiNardo and Hallman, it was in fact, decent. And the fact that DiNardo was able to get 10 wins in the SEC isn't a ringing endorsement of the conference's strength.

I am not a Fulmer lover or hater. Like a majority of UT fans, I BOTH loved and hated him at times. With that said, I always respected him and what he gave to UT and I think with a new perspective, renewed energy, and an opportunity for a fresh start, Fulmer would make an excellent head coach.

I keep reading Fulmer's name being tossed around in more and more places as a potential candidate for Minnesota's next head coach. I think it would be a great place for him and I'm hoping that this rumor takes on some traction. (As an aside, I thought Louisville would have been a perfect job for Fulmer and was disappointed that he didn't get more attention there).

Just a few reasons why I think it would be a great hire for Minnesota--

1. He's a name and brings instant attention and credibility. Love him or hate him, he's got a great resume and is a household name. In addition, Fulmer and Tubby would make a great pair and bring a lot of attention to both of its programs.

2. It can't get much worse in Minnesota right now and Fulmer is the perfect guy to bring a program into the light. Granted, Fulmer's ability to keep the program in the light is a different story, but Minnesota is a long way away from having to worry about that problem.

3. Despite Fulmer's recruiting woes the last few years here, he has tons of contacts all over the country and would immediately super charge their recruiting program. I think Fulmer's got a renewed energy and perspective after having 2 years off. I haven't looked at Minnesota's roster, but I can't imagine there's too many kids that go there from outside the midwest and Fulmer would immediately bring in kids from southern and California schools.

4. Fulmer's style of play is perfectly suited to compete with the current Big 10 powers -- Ohio St, Iowa, Mich St. and Wisc. Fulmer would eventually turn Indiana and Northwestern into Vandy and Kentucky. Rich Rod's spread would pose a problem for Fulmer, but Rich Rod may not be around too long.

QUESTION: If you were the Minnesota A.D., would you put Fulmer on your short list? I would.

It is my firm belief that if Minnesota were to hire fulmer it would be a clear indication to the team, fans, supports and the rest of college football that Minnesota is not committed to fielding a competitive team.

As I said earlier, I just dont get it. The mention of Coach Fulmer will surely be the spark that will one day start the riot that burns Knoxville to the ground. I hope he gets the job. If not that job then some other job. If Lane Kiffin and countless other no-names have a job, then Phil Fulmer deserves a job. He could do no worse. And honestly-how much worse would WE be this year if he would have stayed? For real guys. Get off it. Maybe we did the right thing by getting rid of him, maybe we didnt. But to say Minnesota would be making a huge mistake to hire him is impressively stupid.

Check out how much more loaded the 2008 roster was than this one. Then look at the results. We'd be unbelievably horrible this year.

is fulmer still getting money from ut, or did they already pay him those millions in buyout cash? Someone told me yesterday that he has some gofer type job for the ut president.

I think we still owe him around 3 million.

Would have won 9 games last year.

Would be leading the SECE this year.

Yeah, would have sucked to have kept him.

PS - would have won seven games in 2008.....
