Game Thread: Iowa v Lady Vols, Sat Dec 7th ; Shark Beauty Women's Champions Classic; 7PM; FOX network TV; WIN 78-68

IF CKC is the secret sauce, she will be able to tap new talent as needed. I think this staff may stay together for at least two seasons.
My understanding fm a couple of different sourcces is Gabe was the secret sauce this time. Of course Kim has to close the deal and so gets credit. But if we're talking about hire-able assistants, I'm afraid Gabe is in his prime. But probably not for a couple of years. I'm sure he wants to work with this next class, his babies. OTOH, so much of hiring for top jobs is also about timing. We'll see.

If he plays a lead role in landing two more fantastic recruiting hauls, he'll well establish that this past year wasn't just a fluke and then he will command a much bigger starting salary at his next gig.

But something he said a while back that made me smile is what I think will keep him in Knoxville for at least two or three more years. He was talking about Tennessee and how he'd always dreamed he could coach there but really never envisioned it could ever happen. Basically, he sounded like a longtime fan of the Lady Vols, and that this was his dream school. Which is probably why he's working his butt off in this job. He seems to genuinely love the program and has for a long time. That's got a lot of power.

I disagree with this. Based on what I've heard and seen from Jensen, she IS head coach material and will be a darn good one going forward. Holly was a wingman, at best, FOR the best. But when The Best was gone, so was Holly's true calling. She was born to be a good-hearted support staffer, not a leader.

Jensen, on the other hand, is a leader who is simply in her first year as a head coach after losing THREE truly amazing players in Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin and Gabby Marshall. Iowa is a good, well-coached team that will have a terrific season under a coach who will, in either wins or losses, be capable of communicating smartly about her team and the game.
I made the initial comparison to Warlick because Jensen did do the same thing. She stayed in Iowa City with Lisa Bluder for 24 years and passed up numerous chances to be a head coach, starting with declining a chance to succeed Bluder at Drake in 2000.

I think she will be a successful head coach (you'd have to be really bad to wreck Iowa), but she still has no business being snarky about Kim Caldwell, a woman who has already accomplished far more as a head coach than Jensen has. Caldwell's style beat her butt in a fair fight, didn't it?

Can tell she’s from Tennessee…
“…reckonized” ! 🤣😉🤙🏼🧡
And gettin' back in the ray-kins....

Overall, very poised in front of the camera, Thoughtful answers without a lot of uhs and duhs.

Also, little known fact. CKC was valedictorian for the Bill Belichik School of Press conferences

I think she out Belichick's Belichick. Somehow she can be blunt but still likable.

I hope CKC's one word responses (and corresponding WTF? stares) motivates these reporters to come up with better questions.

So many of them are just mindnumbingly stupid. It feels that like they are just making it up the second they get called.

Reporter: Oh crap, me? Uh, uh coach, your team, um, um, um plaaaaaaaaaaaayed....defense. Was that part of your game plan or just something that happened?

CKC: It was part of the game plan (Death stare-- mutters under her breath, "f$#@ idiot")

Kim absolutely lights up when asked a well conceived pointed question.🙋‍♂️

I guess not surprised to hear that Jewel still isn't 100%. That sucks for her, and I hope she gets fully healthy soon, but at the same time it makes me feel like we haven't seen the best of what Jewel can do in this system. In the first two games, she averaged 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3.5 3s per game. Since then, she's averaging 5.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.8 steals, and 1.3 3s per game. I still think there's a lot of room (and time) for her to find success here in her final year.

For Jenna what a great opportunity if she can pull off some big wins she may not be with Coach Kim much longer. Going to be a lot of coaches out of work after this season and several job openings. Depending on the job she does I could definitely see herself getting one of those jobs.
This is the style of play that Jenna has been part of for several years. It’s the style she knows. Other schools will be interested in Jenna and this brand of basketball only if Tennessee is successful for several seasons. So I think she’ll be around until that’s established.

Ten days until the Richmond game hope she can be close to 100 percent by that game.

Yes, I had suspected, it was nice to have it confirmed. I was bragging on her improved defense in the first few games then last game or two it was awful.

Makes much more sense if she is not 100% and is moving cautiously out there. I truly think Iowa knew she was physically limited they attacked her to the left side of the basket every time she was guarding someone.

And it’s not that hard to do. Reporters just have to quit asking ‘Know-it-all-questions” and be more open-ended. For example, in this presser, someone actually ask this—so, your team did a lot of double teaming in the post. Was that part of the game plan or something that just happened?” I suppose the reporter thought he sounded basketball smart but it was an embarrassingly dumb question that received a very curt response – "it was part of the game plan."

But, where was CKC supposed to go with that question, anyway?. It begs for essentially a yes or no answer. But, if he had asked, so what was your strategy for defending Iowa in the post?,” that open-ended query would have given plenty of space for CKC to elaborate.

If any LV beat reporters are reading this, do better!!! You might actually get some interesting quotes if you just ask actual questions, rather rephrasing your game analysis as a question.

Listen to Kim’s press conference. She doesn’t elaborate.
