Game Thread Lady Vols at West Virginia

My take on today's game...

Tennessee has yet another gigantic team that will destroy teams on the boards, but get little payoffs because when they do get the o-board, they just fling it towards the basket expecting to get it back and eventually make the putback or get fouled. They are athletes first, basketball players second.

Today is the first time I noticed how big Keyen is. She's huge and takes up a ton of space. Unfortunately, she also looks shorter than 6'1 and I can see her eating a lot of Spaulding burgers against bigger, stronger SEC posts. She was strong and aggressive, but was getting swallowed up inside.

Marta did some good things today. Horston was mostly solid. Interior offense was weak. Both KK and Key missed wide open layups that were momentum killers. Not convinced Walker can play at this level. The less said about Davis today, the better. Burrell put points on the board, but a lot of those 4q drives that led to her personal FT parade could have easily been charges. She was out of control quite a bit and shot poorly.

All in all...this is not a good team. WVU isn't that great of a team and probably a bubble tournament team, but they won despite not playing particularly well. If they can't beat Texas, I think the NCAAT streak will come to an end. Eventually, Kellie has to win a 50-50 game...let alone one against a top 15 team.

WV did beat Vic Mississippi State last season and at a time were also ranked
They had Tynice Martin last year, and didn't bring anyone in anywhere close to her. They're picked to finish #5 in a weak B12 conference this season. They are a decent team, but this is the kind of team that Tennessee should be beating. Tennessee is a much more talented team.

I’m going to catch crap but I said it in another thread. This team has maybe two or three SEC level players. Too many over weight, heavy legged, no athleticism, post players. Plus KJH is just not that good of a coach.

There is not one coach that would put a player in that is not capable of helping the team just because the game is in her home state. Come one people...Harper is trying to win a game!

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Right now
Right nooooooooowwwww....

Mike Carey is not a flashy name but he's a helluva coach. Completely restored the WV program from ashes a decade or so ago. He's rough, foul mouthed, and demanding but if I were an AD I'd take him over any of our hires--no offense to them.

Are we more talented? We have been saying this for several years but you are what your record says! I guess the sting of losing is not as bad as long as we continue to say we have more talent 🤷‍♂️

I agree that she has limitations, but one token appearance per year in a big game is not too much to ask, IMO. The worst that would have happened is that someone might have blamed the OT loss on her getting in the game for a minute.

If this were any other game on the schedule, I'd be more inclined to agree. But this has to be embarrassing in front of friends and family who might not get this opportunity again.
She couldn’t have been as bad as Rennia at times... :/

No crap from me I see exactly what you are saying. Slow. And I know most will not agree with this but Davis seems to act like she would rather be anywhere besides a basketball court.

Horston #2 in her class
Davis #12 in her class
Burrell #43 in her class
Key #47 in her class
Does West Virginia have 1 top 50 recruit ?

I see your point but I am not sure a token 1 to 2 minutes is that much different from not playing. Her friends and family likely know that playing for the LVs is a big step up for her and her current role on the team. In a very competitive game, it sends all the wrong singles to put on a player for token minutes so mom and dad can yell, "that is my baby!".

This always happens-- on the one hand, people complain that Kellie needs to "shorten the bench" and then also complain when certain players, who clearly are not ready for prime time, don't get some minutes. Nobody needs to "free Emily"-- Emily needs to get better or transfer to a school with lower competitive demands.

As I said, it would come down to coaching and another fail by Kellie. Game management was piss poor, but this loss (like many losses to come) happened in the offseason when Harper failed to secure the point guard position. Jordan Guarantano did some good things, but playing her at point will continue to be a disaster.

I wish Davis' play on the court matched all her preseason bravado talking about having a chip on her shoulder. Maybe these no-shows are why your team is "disrespected" Rennia? Any talk of her being the #1 pick seems laughable at this point.

Let's hold off on clearing space in the rafters for Marta Holdsclaw's jersey for now.

Mr. Jolly is doing wonders for post development.

Looks like the other SEC teams are faring quite well today against the mighty Big 12. Leave it to Tennessee to embarrass the conference. It's going to be a loooong season, Fulmer better hurry up and sign the mediocre coach he picked out to an extension...

Oh a toke for 1 to 2 minutes could be very different!
One toke over the line sweet Jesus, on toke over the line.
