Game Thread Lady Vols at West Virginia

As I said, it would come down to coaching and another fail by Kellie. Game management was piss poor, but this loss (like many losses to come) happened in the offseason when Harper failed to secure the point guard position. Jordan Guarantano did some good things, but playing her at point will continue to be a disaster.

I wish Davis' play on the court matched all her preseason bravado talking about having a chip on her shoulder. Maybe these no-shows are why your team is "disrespected" Rennia? Any talk of her being the #1 pick seems laughable at this point.

Let's hold off on clearing space in the rafters for Marta Holdsclaw's jersey for now.

Mr. Jolly is doing wonders for post development.

Looks like the other SEC teams are faring quite well today against the mighty Big 12. Leave it to Tennessee to embarrass the conference. It's going to be a loooong season, Fulmer better hurry up and sign the mediocre coach he picked out to an extension...
LOL vintage Darth! And not completely wrong. I hear the usual suspect chomping at the bait.

I did not see the game (highlights anywhere) but the most damning stat line is really not the 20 TOs but the 2-19 three point shooting. Against decent teams, it really hard to win without shooting a better % than that. If the Lvs shot a mediocre 30%, around 6 for 19, there is no overtime and we are talking about a convincing win. That was the story last year well. On the few games where the LVs shot decently from outside, they looked like a very competitive team; on bad shooting nights, not so much.

Yes. Consistent, even just above 35% shooting fm 3 would be a dream. But if we had a post scoring threat we wouldn't have to take so dang many 3s when they aren't falling. Lol its all incestual.

I was really disappointed we broke down into a Holly ball panic play on our last possesion in regulation. We ran some nice plays earlier but couldn't pull one off when it counted. Davis desperately trying to create, makes a silly boo boo. Disappointing.

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Right now
Right nooooooooowwwww....
yes, lets all hold hands and sing kumbaya.....

It's a competition. Should we give out participation trophies too?

Horston #2 in her class
Davis #12 in her class
Burrell #43 in her class
Key #47 in her class
Does West Virginia have 1 top 50 recruit ?
Those were just numbers given to these players based on playing against inferior HS and AAU opponents. Damn rating services they are wrong so much more than they are right!

We had two runs of more than 5 pts
Q2 8:58-6:58 9 pt run (Jordan H, Rae, Tamari, Keyen, Rennia)
Q4 5:54-1:13 10 pt run (Jordan H, Rae, KK, Keyen, Rennia)
Nuff said!

I bet Darth was dancing around the room while posting that. It is kind of cool to see an expression of such unbridled joy and elation. And the full throated diss on Rennia!!! That is performance art! Clearly, a lot off pent up energy that needed to be released following the two opening LV wins. I am sure that was a hard stretch on Darth.

Did you get it all out of your system?

Rennia stunk it up tonight, but she would have to go backwards at a rate unlike any player in history to not be a top 5 WNBA pick. Even after tonight, she will still firmly be in the conversation for #1.

I feel like we only have 2 3-point shooters: Rae and Horston
No team in their right mind will not guard Rennia Davis tightly from the perimeter. She hasn't shot well for the last year, but she has nearly unlimited range.

Davis, Horston and Rae are all well-rounded players who can score out to the arc and consistently able to create their own shot. Walker was a streaky shooter at her last school against much lesser competition, and it's TBD if she will be able to replicate that against SEC guards. Salary has potential to be similar to the first 3, but probably not this year.

Rennie and Darby can shoot, but neither of them has any business being on the court over those 5.

Even before this debacle, she hasn't exactly had an impressive start to the season. And they haven't even faced a ranked team yet...

That's true, but we know what she consistently delivered for 3 years. No different from Aliyah Boston, who has been less than impressive thus far this season.

Unless Rennia's skills have significantly eroded, she will be in the conversation. She wasn't exactly bad in the first 2 games. She just didn't take over (not that they needed her to).

KJH thought it was pretty simple in her post game comments: we couldn't hit a shot. Got good looks, didn't think we shot too many 3s, just a dismal shooting day. Also mentioned the free throw discrepancy. Liked the fight and effort, liked the D and the board crashing. Just couldn't hit a dang shot. Did also acknowledge the t.o. problem.

I was also quite impressed with Jordan Horston's post game interview. Very smart, observant, anxious to learn and correct. I think eventually she will come into her own, and be consistent about it. Cannot happen too soon.

I'm really glad they got that game w Furman squeezed in before the Texas game. Every chance possible for tuning up.

Beating up on an undersized and underskilled Furman team will provide minimal preparation for Texas, unless Furman happens to have a highly skilled and athletic 6'2/6'5 post combination along with athletic guards.

I don't know WNBA draft like you guys do, but is there a degree to which scouts expect an inconsistent Lady Vol player to be an underdevoloped gem waiting to be polished? Maybe its potential they're looking at.

Will have to agree to disagree. I guess the difference is I see potential for improvement in a young, new team and every chance to play together is a good opportunity. Also, I want Davis to have a chance to get this game out of her system before going to Texas. A good argument could be made however that the time would better be spent practicing.

It's always potential that they're looking for, which is why you get players like Jackie Young drafted #1 and the Naismith POY Gustaffson a 2nd round draft pick who was waived. Nina Davis was a 3-time collegiate All-American and didn't even get drafted (or was a 3rd round draft) and was quickly waived.

Rennia has size, athleticism, shooting range, and is an aggressive rebounder. The WNBA scouts have probably been salivating over her for a few years. Plus, this is a weak draft. Michaela Onyenware and Dana Evens will likely get the college awards, but I don't think either of them are better pro prospects than Rennia, and the mock drafts (and likely the live draft when it happens) reflects that.

Still, to my eye, most of our losses over the last several years appear to have boiled down to some of our scorers having been frustrated because we are, as a team, a quarter- to a half-step slower than opposing guards and forwards. Even a teeny bit less foot-speed can make a world of difference to opponents who have quick, swarming defenses that disrupt our flow.

So, IMO, that’s at the core of why Tennessee lost today. Not lack of desire, or lack of energy, or lack of good coaching. Our players were discombobulated because they were frustrated, and that type of frustration snowballs. I can never be angry over a loss when I think another team was just quicker than ours. It just is what it is.

Furman up next, then Texas, and I’m looking forward to both! GO LADY VOLS!
