Game Thread Lady Vols vs. Carson-Newman College,Exhibition Game

all-knowing sage when it comes to DD's health? The fact is, DD's situation has been unclear because Warlick never talks facts but is giving fans and the media vague comments when it comes to injuries. We've known there is an issue, but the severity is quite unknown. Beyond that, there is a general concern because she is so important to us this year--and any player who is not playing or practicing regularly risks not being sharp--so please spare us your patronizing attitude.

As for Jones making everyone forget DeShields, uh, not quite. Let's not be completely delusional.

JJ is barely in DD's time zone. Don't get me wrong JJ is good but DD is one of those players, when she is at her best, can take over a game.

This has nothing to do with UConn. Pat would never have allowed her team to disrespect an opponent, especially a D-II team in an exhibition game. The players C-N had on the court were 5-4, 5-5, 5-5, 5-10 & 6-0. Russell celebrated like she just scored on Griner.

Sorry but while there lots of good things to say about how Tenn played tonight, that play at the end looked out of character for the LV's.
They were working on end game situations because of the new format. They wouldn't have done it if the rules hadn't changed. They wanted the players to get a feel for how the end of the game works now. That's why you play exhibitions. This game was to work on certain areas of the game. You need to get over yourself. It is an exhibition game. Don't you think the coach at CN wanted to work on the same situation? Of course he did. I can assure you he had no problem with it.

Holly told why in her post game interview; training on new rules.

Quit griping and look in your own backyard.

It was a good scrimmage and no one cares what you think about the LV's or any of their coaches.

Your opinion only. I doubt you'll find anyone here in agreement.

I just saw another ESPN Diamond Deshields short... She said Tennessee's secret weapon is Jasmine Jones could JJ have a huge impact this season

Cooper, Nared and DeShields are injured. Moore is sick.
what's wrong with Cooper? Iwonder why Holly would hint at suspensions and not name who, She didn't have a problem naming names last year.

Like C-N, Central Arkansas' size consists of 6'1" & 6' centers & a 6' forward. Tenn could pull 5 names out of a hat and win easily.

Massey predicts a final score of 77-36.

It's hard to sit people with suspensions when you're already down to 8 players due to injury/illness. The people with the infractions may find themselves serving time when their injured teammates return.

Regarding the game, I thought our ball movement was good, partly because Jordan was distributing the ball well, partly because Mercedes was making an inside-out game very easy, and partly because people were looking to create their own shots. We haven't had some of these things in a while now. OTOH, our 3-point defense still sucks.

It is hard to read much into these kind of exhibition openers. For me, one thing that stood out was how much fitter and more athletic Mercedes looked compared to her freshman year.

I expect she will need a few games under her belt against better competition to really get into the groove but her potential impact is an exciting prospect.

On DD, the reports are, as well known, shin splits and patellar tendonitis both of which are chronic (on going) problems. They are not like conventional injuries where one can predict that a sprained ankle will heal in four weeks or a broken bone in six. Both problems could linger on for an entire season or one of both could dissipate in two weeks. They tend to be the kind of problems that can be managed but, if they get over stressed, then you have to take time off to let the problem settle down to a manageable point.

So, the management model is to be conservative with minutes played; be sensitive to when pain is getting worse or becomes shooting rather that a constant ache; and be aggressive with ice, electric stem therapy (for the shin splints) and anti-inflammatories.

So, the bottom line, if I were a coach, I would not play DD in an exhibition game either; No need to stress these chronic injuries in a game that does not matter.

I just want to start off by saying that Jasmine Jones is back and she really is our secret weapon.. She has gotten so much more stronger and that elevation of hers is top notched... The play in which she powered by 3 defenders and went in for the layup was pretty impressing even better if it would've went in... Mercedes has great hands and she runs the floor so well just so smooth and seeing her run the floor with Draya put a big smile on my face oh and speaking of Draya way to shoot way to create your on shot good job lets keep that confidence all year... Also Kortney at the 4 seems reasonable she's a big body she looks 6'3 to me vs 6'2 but she does have a nice shot I hope Holly plays her more. Jordan see's the floor extremely well and her shot looks better Meme a tad wild but I love her energy she can be a game changer down the road... The team looks good thus far

It's beyond belief how anyone can spew negativity, sans the 3-pt defense, after last evening's exhibition. First, we are witnessing the real Mercedes Russell for the first time, and she impressed. I love her hands, bb iq, touch, height (obviously, this is a given), passing ability and stamina (played a lot of mins for a preseason contest).

JJones looks primed and ready. Reynolds has matured on the court. Carter's shot, though a work in progress, looks smooth. Dunbar is a legit weapon, folks. Bash merely needs to stay aggressive and work on consistency and in-out game. Middleton's jumper is a thing of beauty: she's improved over all.

Holly will get after it this week where three-point defending and consistency is concerned. The potential for Team '15-16 is through the roof. I can't wait to see DD, Cooper and the others (hoping the reports that Nia has become more physical during the off season are true) on the floor.

The LVs should have ample talent, depth and drive this year to reach the Final Four ... and hopefully beyond.

It's good to be a Lady Vols fan!

I'm scratching my head over that too Jeff. They gave up way to many three point shots, and I thought this team would be even better defensively than they were last year. One thing is for sure, Holly was pissed about it.
We don't guard the three, we are all helping inside. Holly doesn't believe in guarding the three, help for the bigs is her mantra!

There are other ways to deal with players beside not playing. After all, that is what they came here to do!

This game was what the team needed. They will be able to sit back and re-watch it and see where they are at, and what they need to fix. Clearly the team will have to work on bending their knees, getting in a real defensive stance, and guarding the 3 ball. Our players were standing straight up and just 'following' CN around the whole game.

My biggest question going into this season is based on what has hurt us the last couple years: SHOOTING.
I understand it's CN, but, no matter who you are playing, their will be times when you are going to be wide-open for a shot and you have to shoot it. We shot 59%. And Carter shot the ball 14 times and was 50%. That was her 'drop mic' performance for all the nay-sayers.

I liked the offense sort of. Last night we saw a lot of 4 around 1. This offense works against teams with no height. CN wasn't really disrupting the passing lanes, etc. But with teams with height, ND, SC, Stanford, TX, I don't see us winning a game solely on a 4-1 set.

Lastly, all the girls were smiling during the game and having fun.
1) Chemistry looks great!!!
2) While it's CN, I get the relaxed feel of the game, but I am very excited to actually see this team play a game with a 'hungry' mentality of winning.

Happy with the shot selections/shooting
Defensive stances, face-ups needs work. Identifying the shooter always!

*Nobody was suspended* everybody was 'injured' who didn't play. Coop will be ready for Sunday. Nia should be. DD = the new Jannah Tucker :) (joke)

if one would count the posts on this thread and grade them positive, negative or neutral.

And if one can almost grade whether the poster believe he/she is "right and all knowing" versus "just my opinion".

Obvious a lot of depth this year during a time of major in-game change requirements based on four quarters and foul counting. One of my observations regarding playing time is whether the player can anticipate and stop the baseline dribble drive.

With the athleticism this team should be able to play many types of zones including match-up. Go L-Vols

Lots of glowing comments but if you are honest with yourself, the 2nd and 3rd quarters were pathetic at times. 1st quarter was good and the 4th was outstanding. The 4th quarter pace was a 148 point per game pace. I know they were working on some things and didn't trap much but when they did it usually turned into a steal. They are still getting beat too much on dribble drives and 3 point defense once again needs work. This team can be very good but they have a way to go yet.

We really haven't seen the main team yet that I think can be dynamic and get to the final four. That would be Diamond and Cooper in the starting lineup along with Russell, Graves or Jones and Carter. When healthy a perimeter of Diamond, Carter, and Cooper can get after perimeter players like none other we can put out there.

The next opponent.

Central Arkansas Sugar Bears.

Should be a game something like the exhibition but it could be by a lager margin if Diamond, Cooper, and Moore play.
