Game Thread Lady Vols vs Maryland In the Sweet 16

I know that they had the same time off,but it seem to hurt them more, they never did look like the same team as in the SEC Tournament,or to me any way

and a home run by Davin :)

They looked exactly the same. The difference is that Maryland is not LSU, and they couldn't get away with only playing 20 minutes.

I just want a coach that knows just what to do and say to get through to the team and knows just how to get into their heads by challenging them to be better. it's too bad that we do not have that and i'm afraid we won't get anywhere if this is what we're stuck with in the many years to come.

Sadly, we're seeing the decline of the Lady Vols bball program. We've gone from a top 3 program to top 25, and I think the AD is fine with that.

Next year we should be a lot better. We only lose Simmons but get a top 5 recruiting class along with getting Tucker back who would have been huge for us this year because unlike most of our guards she can score

Sounds like Tucker may need more surgery, so she may not be the answer.

I agree with guards that are afraid to shoot, along with a petrified Burdick and a downtrodden Graves is not the team core that will go far next year. Unless Graves and Russell come ready to play and Burdick gets over her stage fright, Tennessee will miss out on the FF for a 6th straight year.

Now, if they get A'ja, that might be a different story. This loss may actually help with the recruiting. Imagine the appeal of being the player to resurrect the once mighty LVs back to Elite status!

Indeed. La Tech is a great example of a powerhouse that is nowdays nowhere to be found.

give me a break, our 2nd year Head Coach made it to the elite 8 last year and to the sweet 16 this year and the mighty Lady Vols are going into obscurity ? I hardly think so,no matter what all the nay sayers are predicting

I say congrats to the Lady Vols

as all ways Go Lady Vols :clapping:

With Holly coaching, I doubt even aja could fix all the issues this team has.

I tend to agree with you- outside of Thomas we are more talented from top to bottom than MD. And although our defense, especially in transition, was horrible today, our lack of any type of half court offense is our most glaring weakness. It's painful to watch us stand around and then watch someone go one-on-one. If you have Candace Parker you can do that, otherwise, you have no shot in beating the good teams.

Russell and Carter will get better and better. Lots of upside on this team

Agreed mule. Puzzling how they can go from the effort and focus they had in the sec tournament to what we just saw.

This team will never be good with Warlick. She's over her head. Yes, next year we have the potential to be very good--but after this display, who really thinks we will be? We will get beat by a good team with better coaching. Good players don't help if your offensive sets sux or you throw the ball away or you can't guard your opponent. We can't defend very well and our offensive execution would make a high school coach blush. We need a brass-tacks coach. Hiring Warlick--a gesture to PS--was a mistake.

Did not know about Tucker potentially needing surgery that is not good news at all

I thought that about Burdick and Jones, but I was clearly wrong (although Jones was pretty good today).

Russell or Carter need to be AA level next year if they want to get back to the FF. Izzy's numbers will plummet if there isn't a Simmons minimum level guard to keep the defense honest.

On the national scene they have absolutely faded into obscurity. Even the announcers talked about on tv.

I like that you are an optimist and don't believe the sky is falling. That's certainly true but to deny that we aren't nationally relevant anymore is a little bit naive wouldn't you say?

I know it would sound silly anywhere else to have a team that went 29-6 or whatever it was, that this year was not good, but it is the case here...How do u say bad things about coaching with a record like we had, crazy huh..All i know is...this team never got better as the year went on, and that says a lot about the adults on the sideline, and particularly the head coach...I was sadden to have to watch this game...MD was doing whatever they wanted, whenever, and we never made any adjustments, that i could see with my naked eye...JUST SAD

In before armchair and the other closet unconn fans come in with their gloom and doom posts. Go Lady Vols and Coach Holly Warlick. You wannabes can stick it up you tailpipes and spin. Go lap on little geno rather than pollute the Lady Vols site.

Wait armchair is dbag over here too?

Caldwell isn't the answer, either: We beat lsu twice, what does that tell you? They will get beat today. I would love to have the maryland coach--she is tough-minded and can recruit. Forget the PS tree. We will languish until we get a staff that knows what the heck they are doing.

Bad coaching, Bad playing, Bad everything. Terrible game by this "1 seed"

We have waited all year for the Lady Vols to play a forty minute game, though we didn't think about a completely negative forty minutes. Our ladies have been out coached, out scrapped, out hustled, out fought, and out played by a big margin. The team obviously did not get a wake up call this morning.Turnovers, poor lay up shooting ,and very poor defense were the staples of this performance.Maryland had what the LVs have lacked for several years now---a go to player who carried her team to great heights.Candace was our last one. What an extraordinarily awful performance by this team.Carter and Burdick and Reynolds were no shows, with Harrison fouling too much and Graves simply being out muscled in the post.Jones played okay except for turnovers,Russell played okay, but not enough minutes, and Simmons could not pick the entire team up despite having a decent game although she tried.Once again, our ladies made a really good player look like a hall of famer. For six years now, the mentality of the LVs has been questionable in their desire and basketball IQ. Thought after the 2008 recruits left in 2012,that would change, but it has continued with this group. They have become like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates----- you never know what you're going to get. Now,turn the page, and hope our new recruits will bring a more competitive attitude in the next year.

And the thing is, we played that kind of crappy one on one offense most of the year. Holly made no adjustments and this is the result. She had the whole season to address the sloppy offense, turnovers, opposing players having career games, horrible transition defense... The list goes on and on. She couldn't get it done with the massive amount of talent she had this year, why would this be any different next year? Simmons and Harrison really made this coaching staff look better than what they are. Thomas with a career day against us? Why am I not surprised.

To much one on one. To much dribbling and not enough passing. To many turnovers which wasn't something happening as of late. MD played bad Tenn played worse. How do you fix that. Work on stop dribbling and start passing and cutting and setting pics and screens. With all that height it should be easy to win. Get it inside and kick it out. Basic BB. Today was back to early season mistakes. To much one on one and to much dribbling. Thats where the turnovers come from. Well one senior graduates and perhaps the Tenn coaching staff needs to spend sometime with NBA coaches and learn how to run a defense and how to run an offense and just do it. Somebody posted if Jeff or Muffitt or Geno or Tara coached Tenn they would be better. Yes they would. Just to much talent and height to lose like they did.
