Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Oklahoma; Sun Jan 5th ; Home game; 3 PM Eastern; ESPN

Hate to lose as much as anybody, but I see a lot of potential in this team. Coach Kim is trying to get it out of them. I think she eventually will get what she wants out of the players there are parts of games where they play as well as any team in the country. Still trying to find conssitency in effort and teamwork.

Disappointing loss after a butt ugly game with a beautiful comeback. I can't fathom being sour about where the program is right now. Just can't.

The acid test is still @ Texas-Scarolina-@Missouri-UConn-@LSU. I've said that from the start of this season. That's when we'll know just what we've got in this team.

Sarah was open, took the shot without hesitation, just barely missed! If she drains it everybody is singing her praises. This group is still a work in progress but has a huge upside!! Go Vols!!
Yeah....got to take that shot. Anyone questioning that is a fool.

Sooners are very strong physical team.

Win some, lose some, when running with the big dogs.

Thrilled to be back at this level for first time in 10-12ish years

New players New coaches New system. This team coaches and players are still learning each other and the system. They will have it all together by tournament time. Just shoot better at the free throw line and stop the dribble drive to the basket. That will take care of a lot of the close games. Use this game for a great learning experience. Continue to fight and learn.

Should we try Coop at the back of the press so the long passes over the top get picked? Just don't think you can sail the ball long if she is the free safety. I would have to try it to find out. Maybe not all the time but just keep them off balance not knowing when she will be
back there. Just a random thought.

Yeah I’m excited for year 3 and 4 more than anything. Running this system with some of the hold overs is a big ask. A few of them just simply can’t do it.

I honestly feel this is a SEC and NCAA contending roster right now for the Lady Vols.
Coach Caldwell has her players now and the transfer portal era has evolved the sport. It doesn’t take years to build a team.
They just had an inconsistent game today against a highly ranked team.
They were competitive and it came down to the final play.
You can build a team for 3 to 4 years and still lose in this fashion with the #1 ranked team or best roster in WBB.
I think there’s a silver lining to the outcome of this game today.
Tennessee is a contender.

A heckuva comeback by the LadyVols even though it fell short. Very proud of them for almost coming up with a win. This team never gives up. If they had just made their foul shots and if someone else besides Jewel Spear had been making 3's it would not have been close. I definitely think UT is the better team.
On an unrelated side note, Lauren Hurst of Cleveland was once again sitting in my section and I was able to ask her if she was still planning on playing volleyball too and she said yes she was and that she was excited about that. I'm sure she has been in contact with coach Eve Rackham Watt about that matter. As someone on this forum stated before, I think she's liable to play more volleyball than basketball for the Lady Vols.
Did you see Harpring? If so, what are your thoughts?

Sorry but no. All conventional basketball wisdom in that situation says go to the rack. If you’re down one you go to hole. You either score and win, or get fouled and have a chance to win it at the line.

You preferably make your move with about 6 seconds on the clock so there is time for a put back if you miss and don’t get fouled.
The head coach disagrees with you:

Today's +/- highlights

Hollingshead: +15 on 16 minutes
Whitehorn: +11 on 23 minutes

lowlights

Jewel: -10 on 29 minutes
Puckett: -11 on 19 minutes
Spearman: -19 on 23 minutes

[okay, so maybe I was wrong about Puckett being worse than Spearman]

Cooper would be much higher, but 2 turnovers, 0 assists, 0 threes all holds her back. Ends +2.
Spearman has to quit shooting line-drive threes. This team still have a few players who add little athletically like Puckett, T. Darby and Holinshed but yet they, with the exception of Puckett, are playing their best basketball. Darby is good at shooting threes only if she is wide open. CKC has done a good job with what she inherited and the pieces she has added in. CKC has got to get the team to play a new system in the SEC and from the way they played they played it well. Especially down the stretch. Yes, they made mistakes and errors, however, they never gave up. They will only learn from the mistakes they made.

This game was lost because our defense allowed Oklahoma to score 87 points. A good defensive effort (for us) is allowing less than 80 points. Please don't blame Puckett, Spearman or any other player. The team allowed Oklahoma to score 87 points.
Go 4/7 at the FT line they win. Instead they went 2/7 and lost.

Omg you have to have Cooper take it to the basket there. Shooting 20% from 3 and that heave from Puckett?

Anyhow- LVs never quit. Just so disappointing way to end.
I agree that Cooper should have touched the ball, but if Puckett’s shot goes in everyone would be singing her praises.
