Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Oklahoma; Sun Jan 5th ; Home game; 3 PM Eastern; ESPN

Go 4/7 at the FT line they win. Instead they went 2/7 and lost.
Plus they had 16 shots from the foul line ! Verses our 7……. Plus they made 11 to our measly 2. That’s a 9 point difference and we lost by one ? Just saying

P.S. they out rebounded us also ! Rebounding and foul line has won us a lot of games ! Not today

Yep, and that's not a big ask.
I was proud of the way they never quit and gave their self a chance at the end. I know following the thread there were some fans that gave up very early or said its over just some negative vibes, that I hope can just stay on the fan side.

It was a growing day for them and one they’ll take away the little things that lost them the game and be better down the road. All you need is a chance to win it and they fought back for it.

Analytical people see where the game was loss. It wasn’t on the last shot, it was the build up that led to the last shot being a make or break.

She literally says that’s not how we drew it up but Sara was wide open. Guarantee you Sara was supposed to be the screener for Coop to go to the basket with Spear in the corner.

I just watched the replay of the final minutes.
I’m actually even more stunned by how it played out on that final play. You can tell there was some confusion before the inbound with Ruby going over to talk to Samara who then looks to the bench and one of the assistants is telling her the play. For whatever reason though Ruby seemed to think something about her position on the court before just settling in that space.
Now where I believe there’s a question is why was Samara Spencer throwing the ball inbounds?
I think that gave Oklahoma an advantage in this case when you have 10 secs on the clock inbound it to your point guard and let her attack to find Cooper or Spear for a good look or score at the rim.
Also, when the ball went to Cooper she didn’t look anywhere else but to Puckett.
And as someone mentioned no other player moved.
Now I don’t know why all four players completely froze but to me it seemed like an option on the set play to take that 3pt point shot.
Just my opinion.

Because Spencer is always the inbounder on plays when she’s in the game?

You’re too defensive and wrong about this particular situation.
First, she’s not always the inbounder on sideline out possessions which this was.
When they are taking the ball out underneath the basket is when generally I’ve seen any of the point guards as the inbounder.
Second, you can’t watch that final play and not come away agreeing this played into Oklahoma’s favor. So with a timeout remaining and atleast a player or two not sure of the final play everyone can see the staff needs to manage this more efficiently from a strategic point.

I literally had a headache after the game. I think some here, including myself at times, forget that we are in year one of a rebuilding process. All the wins against mostly inferior teams just revved up the emotions behind the narrative that we are competing for championships this year. Danny White didn't help matters on this front either. It seems like a lot of games we have periods in which we show the promise of our team and coaching strategy, most recently seen the first half of the A&M game and the 4th quarter of the OU game. During those periods, we are just amazing in creating turnovers, good ball movement or athletic moves for the open shot, rebound ferociously, and even exhibit some decent half-court defense. In the same games, we see some of our limitations with poor ball movement with few assists, quick 3s without going inside first (Caldwell has actually said she has recently emphasized this with the team), and horrible half-court defense that allows the other team to get so many uncontested layups. If we put a whole game or even three quarters of our better side, look out. We don't have to even be on fire if we avoid looking horrible for a quarter.
This game made it clear that there is a big gap between our first team vs. our second team. Our starter scored 77 points, and the bench players scored 9. I think that are weak schedule has masked this for the most part. While I do hope this is a low point for the bench, it is another indication that this is a rebuilding year number one. The way she recruits the type of players that fit her system, there is no reason to think that the 2nd team in year two and beyond may really be talented and help the platoon system.
Here is a few of my wishes for specific players.
1. Coop - She is a phenomenal player, but I wish at times she would keep an eye for open players when she is bulldozing towards the goal. Yes, she often finishes but it also causes too many turnovers.
2. Zee - No three point shooting. Zilch. You can at least drive in a little.
3. Did anyone notice that Spencer wasn't so quick with her two foul shots today. Keep working on this.
4. Jewel - Maintain the level of play that you started in conference play.
5. Jillian - At least a couple of shots a game when she is near the rim.
6. Latham and Boyd - keep on learning and growing. A promising future in ahead.

I have no issue with the bench and wouldn’t make that kind of judgement after one game. Most of the players off the bench today didn’t take many shots and with this team averaging 37.5 ppg off the bench it seems like something you always wanted to say and feel like this is the moment.
As I said before Latham, Darby, Puckett, and Hollingshead have all started in the ACC and SEC. Kaniya Boyd just freshman a week ago was SEC freshman of the week.
Tennessee has a good bench now. Losing to a Top 10 team by 1 point and players off the bench not having a strong offensive game is not a sign of a rebuilding year.
I can’t wait until the freshman class is on campus like most but it’s unfair to them even for people to anticipate them being more ready than key reserves who all have started P4 basketball on a Top 10-15 and three of which have earned various SEC and ACC honors in their career.
I think everyone just should let the season play out and embrace this promising season in a new era.

Having your shooter inbound the ball is actually a great way of getting space for them to get open.

Look at the play. That wasn’t called. A lot of people are talking about things that weren’t part of the strategy which is taking things out of context.
Truth is, it seemed like that final play from the reaction of multiple players was executed with uncertainty.

The shot isn’t what lost the game, it just could’ve won the game.

Missed free throws, Weakside defense when the press is broken, rebounding, that dreaded third quarter that we always have, and lack of ball movement in this game. And with all that being said, we lost by one to a veteran led top 10 team that’s a legit contender. This was a great game to have film on early. Because we lack a big big, the posts are going to have to figure out how to make it work to at least keep them from getting the ball and protect the boards.

Forget about the final play. This game was lost in the first quarter. Terrible coaching from CKC for not adjusting to OK consistently breaking our press for multiple uncontested layups. Lack of hustle through 3 quarters, absolutely no crashing the boards and no boxing out. We need some girls with big ole rearends to clear the paint. They need to watch Millicic hustle to grab 18 boards against Arkansas. There was lack of communication. Multiple opportunities to grab a turnover but not paying attention to get in the play. The team does not did not smell blood from about 6 minutes remaining and take advantage of opportunities to cut the lead to single digits. Oh yeah. Free throws. Make them and we win easily in what I hope is the worst game we have from FG% and 3 point FG%. The last play does not concern me any. Puckett had to take such a wide open shot. OK is not very good. We just got outplayed at our own game. Learn from this one and work your butts off in practice. KCK needs more fire, hopefully after the stork visits she will be more like Pat and bench Spearman when she is outer space. Go Vols.
Can't ask for anything more. We were in a position to win with a little better shot

This idea of not having a traditional post player didn’t lose the game either.
It just gets talked about so much therefore the first time the team doesn’t win that’s what people point out. Iowa post players had more of an impact on the game when we faced them in Brooklyn. Jillian Hollingshead played serviceable defense tonight.
We missed a lot of open shots in this game.

I never said she didn’t. Thats actually something I’ve been impressed with this year from her. She’s also so improvement offensively, I know that travel hurt her cuz she was about to explode to the basket and I think that woulda been a confidence booster for her and the team.

However, Beers is a big big body so when I say make something shake, it’s by getting in front of Beers and not sitting behind her because the foul is going to be called and lead to and ones which happened. It’s ok to point things out as they are as well. I pointed to several things that have been consistent issues but hadn’t led to losses. It happened tonight but I don’t think this is gloom and doom in any aspect. In fact, I think this could be a crazy spark for this team. IMO this Oklahoma team is elite(they shouldn’t have lost to Texas) and with consistent play throughout this is a win. I’m excited to see how the girls come out against LSU

But it would still be nice to have one! Beers killed us in the paint today. This team will have some painful outings and losses when shots do not fall like today. They figured it out midway through fourth quarter and started to play so much better. Maybe OK was tired but LVols started forcing mistakes and creating turnovers. I was impressed to see them battle to the end. This team, in March, might be fun to watch.

Saying a player that had a solid game killed a team is just ridiculous.
I could say Jewel Spear killed Oklahoma tonight like some claimed Coulibaly did to Tennessee days ago but neither did.
Beers didn’t either. I don’t understand the hyperbole in discussing player performances nowadays.
Oklahoma beat Tennessee by 1 point. Multiple players on both teams contributed to this game coming down to the final play.

Yep, I pointed out their affect early on in the game. Too much poorly regulated emotion. Even at the end Jewel was lobbying for a foul on the three she shot when if she had hustled back she could have stopped the outlet pass. She is not the worst offender here but they need to watch the men's team and how they never stop hustling to lobby the refs when the game situation demands they hustle.

Spearman was the no-show. We will have to see if that was just a one-off or if that is what happens to her against bigger posts. Because I will tell you right now, we will face MUCH better posts than Beers.

Another thing to remember is that Kim will have an SEC learning curve too. But she analyzes exactly what the problems are correctly and will get everything out of this team that it has.
Which posts are better than Beers in the SEC? She's a walking double with a 68%shooting percentage that ranks her number 4 in the nation in that category.
