Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs Texas ; Thurs Jan 23rd ; Away game; 8 PM Eastern; SECNetwork

I'm usually critical in a loss,,,but the fact that we were projected a double-digit loss,,,I am good with this outcome. It's easy to armchair the ending,,,but the whole game we were competitive and in the hunt....ANd even though I'm not a "good try-coach" I have to say,,,helluva game ladies.
Best post of the night!!

Well I'm proud of the showing tonight by the team. The Head Coach wasn't there and team was in foul trouble whole game. Some forget Texas was a double digit favorite and had to pull out the win in last minute. Future is bright at Tennessee..
I'm not forgetting. I know our women wanted so badly to win this game, and for so many reasons. I hate it for them that they fell short, but dang! I still can't believe we had a shot at beating Texas on the road tonight with some pretty glaring stats issues.

Anybody else can just focus on the negative if that's what makes them feel better, but I'm going to be proud of the effort. And our team did bring the effort, I don't care what anyone says.

Who would have thought that if the LVs shot 50% overall and 52.9% from 3 that they would lose by 4? Crazy stat. FTs were 13/19 LVs vs 15/20 Tx even though LVs had 2x the number of fouls. Only glaring negative stat is the 39 to 24 Tx Reb advantage including 16 to 7 ORs.

Spearman was horrible and should not have been in towards the end if she wasn't gonna try to block Booker's layup fr Sam's turnover.
Horrible? She was 5-8 from the floor and 2-3 from 3 and only one of two in double figures. Guess the rest of them really shouldn't have been on the floor in your opinion. Smart players don't foul out to foul out. The turnover shouldn't have happened in the first place and Spearman wouldn't have been put in that position.

I am going to state the obvious ,,,,,Texas offensive rebounding and 2nd chance points was what beat then tonite .Coach has been harping on that since 1st game .It beat them against Vandy also.Need a big corn fed post who can muscle with posts like Jones. Was proud of the effort....except defensive boards .

Agreed. Our defense and rebounding aren’t where they need to be, but we finally put together 4 quarters of pretty dang good basketball on the road against a top 10 team.
Plus played at a slower organized pace that some believed this team couldn't do.

Took what Texas gave us instead of throwing up 35 three points shots.

Not to mention a conference road game vs a top ten team that was favored heavily by the refs.

Yeah I thought it was one of Zee's better offensive games up until that last shot. But she should never have been the one taking it; that play was a cluster by us from the get go. TX played great D on it and we got discombobed.

We have to find a way to win these games.
That is the coach's job. They only need a small improvement to get there and they have not been able to do it.

Fix the sulking and plays taken off.

Fix the rebounding.

Fix the free throws.

Fix the over dribling hero ball.

Fix the unwillingness to fight over screens.

Fix the lack of help defense.

There are any number of areas where it wouldn't take that much improvement to win these games on a level playing field.

But then the refs would up the ante because they favor the established teams until you make them respect you so we are further away than the scores indicate once you factor that in. Because at the end of the day, women's basketball is more tightly scripted than the WWE. Until your storyline is more compelling than the other team's you will have an uphill battle and the bigger name players and teams will get the calls. Unfortunately, right now everyone is enjoying the storyline of TN being down and not being able to close the deal.... everyone except us that is.

And I have no idea how to fix that.

Defensively she was and gave up too many offensive boards

Yes! The most "normal" I've seen us play, esp on offense. Wouldn't call anything about our defense normal though.

I do think the close win, the big win, is coming. That said, I don't like our chances in the upcoming gauntlet. Maybe at LSU is a chance.

My take:
LVs already had a mental hill to climb without CKC being their coach on the road against Top 10 team. That said, I believe Coach Jenna did a fine job and there’s a reason CKC has kept her on staff. She had a tough row to hoe and she exceeded expectations.
Physically, the LVs don’t have the pieces to match up with Texas bigs. I thought they had a great game plan, but a few-and I mean few- little things by some players here and there were the difference. Mentally, they were gunshy because of the one-sided foul tally. At least one player had the flu. Stuff like that matters in these games.
They did, however, show grit. This was 4th loss, with 3/4 coming against Top 10 teams, by a total of 8 points, and was on the road in prime time with first year substitute coach.
You think about who’s coming in next year and the ones who will still be here. I don’t see a reason for anything besides optimism with that.
They had to deal with all of these things and dang near pulled off another Top 10 road win.
It’s a long season and I fully expect them to keep pounding. Eventually they’ll break through. I’m awfully proud of them!!

Just get back and go straight up(verticality), at least make it tougher.

The last HC was let go due to poor recruiting and an inability to close games vs ranked teams.

Under the new staff, recruiting has been fantastic but our issues are still our issues. This team in particular, tops it off with poor FT shooting and rebounding. I know it’s only year one, and CKC doesn’t have a roster full of her players, but this is exhausting.

I’m gonna have to take a step back from being so invested and just hope things change next season.
take two steps
