Game Thread: MTSU v Lady Vols, Tues. Nov 12th; Home-FCC; 6:30PM; SEC+ network: win 89-75

Missed the game but caught the postgame on radio. (Hope the game in its entirety gets posted)

CKC said regarding our halfcourt defense: we were getting lazy toward the end of the shot clock, drifting settling back to cover the lane.

Responding to leading in rebounds, CKC said yes, but we're still playing against shorter teams. That won't long be the case. (So, I guess the coach considers MTSU to be shorter than our LVs.)

They could hit a much higher % if they would run some plays for the shooters on the team and they have a bunch of them,There are some really bad shots being put up right now.
Have been reminded several times lately that there's no such thing (hardly) as a bad shot around here any more. The point is to chuck enough up that you'll eventually hit enough to win, esp if you also outrebound and turn over the other team. They don't put much value on fg %,. Quantity over quality.

Well....That one wasn't pretty, but should give the coaches a lot of ammunition to use when talking about defense and how to defend without fouling. J.S...

Secondly, the blond referee needs to go back to training cause she stunk the place up with some of the worst calls I've seen in some time...

Everything made it painful to watch. Clanged 3s, missed FTs (MTSU was awful), lots of tie up, and constant whistles. I'm still trying to find the fun and excitement in winning ugly.

Definitely seemed to back off midway thru the second half. I hope to God they're not "worn out" after 3 home games with constant subbing. If so, the celebrated conditioniing program needs a serious going over.

Man it did. Reffing hasn't improved a whit this yr. Disappointing. But you have to adjust to it. They weren't allowing handsy tonight but Coop kept handing. It's a fine line, Lord knows you don't want to pour water on her aggresive fire. But she'll get a better feel for this as the season progresses. It's still very early.

Our half court D was plain ole awful tonight. Getting beat off the dribble repeatedly, and it ain't just Puckett and Darby. Exactly like the last couple of years. Hope that's all over the white board. Also a work in progress I hope.

It's only that high bc Darby got a hot streak after starting cold. Sara also hit two in row so that helped the %. But we still have nothing approaching a consistent 3 pt shooter. I'm tempted to be optimistic about Spencer, but I'm afraid to. Jewel is not getting involved enough.
a bunch of negative in all of this for a team who won tonight against a quality team.

To be honest, Alyssa Latham should start. She showed it tonight.
I absolutely support Sara Puckett and think she’s a good player.
Many good teams have good players coming off the bench.
I think the pressure of better players around her on this team is forcing her outside of her game and comfort zone. It would help to take some pressure off of Sara and bring her off the bench and if she performs better maybe earn that spot.

I agree, she may be a captain and a leader but I think she needs time to assess the game and get her head straight before she gets out there.

Also, the press is not just about turnovers. It's about wearing a team and using your depth and as someone said MTSUs legs were gone ergo all the free throw misses they took 27 missed 13, I think.
What is the #1 objective in running a press? Getting TOs that lead to easy transition points!!!!!!

Yes, there are other impacts but that is the #1 objective. Always has been and always will be.

It's much easier to motivate world class athletes than it is just regular plain Janes. Caldwell had trouble getting Marshall players to play hard for 4 quarters. She's not having that issue in Tennessee.
I missed the story where she had a hard time at Marshall getting her players to play hard for 4 quarters, would you be kind enough to provide a link to that story, thx.

Just the facts maam. I said it's early and this is all stuff that will go on the whiteboard to work on.

Generally that's what we talk about after games - what does the team need to work on moving forward. Makes watching the progress fun.

I don't think that minute and a half would make much difference. Being a starter in this system is only minutely different than coming in on the second shift.
It's possible that Sara, and all our 3 pt shooters, are adjusting to playing in such short bursts. It's a different rythmn than they've played in before.

I didn't say it wasn't the #1 that's elementary, just pointing out that is not the only thing the press does it's a reckoning. It's not rocket science.

Lazaria Spearman and Jillian Hollingshead weren’t at an advantage at all height wise.
A lot of times even when Talaysia Cooper guarded her it wasn’t easy. The refs were so bad they allowed her to get away with 3-second violations all night.
Alyssa Latham completely outplayed her when she was in the game. This was great post play moving forward and now Coach Caldwell and Coach Tubner the post coach has exactly what they need moving forward.
I’m usually fairly generous towards refs…but geez these were awful.

So if you agree with that then you must agree that our press was not that effective tonight, correct?

MTSU TOs= 22
UT TOs = 14

If UT pressed the whole game and MTSU pressed almost never, typically you would expect to see more than a +8 differential in TO margin.

What CKC is expecting is something closer to Nolan Richardson's 40 minutes of hell. Total chaos driven by pressure that forces the opponent to break down and lead to easy transition points. It can be very exciting if executed well. We are a work in progress and that's OK at this point in the season.

Just got home,,,saw the game in person
Here's my take

That was a well coached team with two guards that could play for any SEC team and a post that, if she had had some forwards who could have helped her,,,we would have been in deep doodoo....And yes the female ref called the game as if she was making NIL money from MTSU

There,,,I feel better now

Several Lady Vol teams in the past would’ve folded when MTSU made their run and most likely ended up losing, this team on the other hand , closed the door and took care of business down the stretch. Lots to work on, but nice win for sure! Got our lick back. One down, several more to go.

Two guards that could play for ANY SEC team, you serious? Is that like Maddy could play in the SEC stuff?

Right. So to the point that neither Lazaria Spearman or Jillian Hollingshead was at an disadvantage height wise when you see them having to defend a player that is allowed to stay in the paint and not get called for 3 seconds when they catch the ball mostly any or all contested shots were being called a foul.
The one player that completely played their center one on one with no help was Alyssa Latham.
A few times Cooper did as well. The answer to post defense is playing Latham.
She started at the 5 spot last season for a good Syracuse team.

Yep, hit the gas late in the fourth even. Pushed it to almost 20 and then gave up a couple freebies making it look closer than it was.

When the threes start falling like they did in the 4th we are hard to contend with. It’s demoralizing trading one layup for two treys in under 30 seconds.

Agree 100% on Latham.
