Game Thread: Tennessee (15-8, 8-3 SEC) versus No. 1 South Carolina (23-0, 10-0) @ Food City Center, 2/15, 7:00 PM (EST), ESPN

I think you are misreading some of the posters comments. Most of us know we are short on talent and are disappointed that we have not been able to sign some of out targets. However, we have been ablate improve our talent level through the portal to the degree that we can still play with most of the top t3ams in the SEC. The injury to Jackson hurt us early in the season and I don't think she is yet fully recovered. Key's medical condition has been a major problem and is still a work in progress. We have one top ranked player coming in, but we need a couple more to become more competitive. None of this means we are happy with the current talent level of the tam or the effort that they have shown in some games this year. however, some of us are willing to praise effort when we see it. Negative attitudes never produce success, but continued effort can produce improvement.
We are not short on talent, we are short on developing talent. Big difference when trying to lay blame on the players vs the ones who get paid to develop and recruit players.

Not sure if anyone caught it…Key was posting up for position. South Carolina player let Key get position with her body/weight going back by the basket. The SC player moves back out of the way and done goes Key.
The old pulled the rocking chair out from under her play.

Rickea very interestingly said that she has some fears around reinjury that has been holding her back mentally. Kellie also mentioned that Rickea has been getting back in the gym. So that may also explain some small proportion of our results as well.

Officiating didn't lose the game or cause us to miss open shots (or ignore open teammates), but the way SC was allowed to displace our bigs was insane. SC was allowed to Shaq our players all night long until they got the ball underneath. Key, Hollingshead, and Striplin were fighting hard but kept getting shouldered, hooked, and shoved out of the way. Just bullyball.

I could swear that I saw Cardoso with her elbow up in Karoline's throat when Karo was bodied up trying desperately to hold her position as is her right (according to these things called "rules"). Despite all that, our girls battled on the boards and boxed out well until they were just physically worn out.

Sour 🍇 or accurate observations?
Probably both. I'm sure SC fans are saying the exact same thing about the other end of the court. Like @knoxvol52 said, the refs aren't going to get every call right. I saw a lot of flopping on both sides (mainly Watkins from SC), and the refs weren't biting. I'm sure SC fans are convinced that she was displaced. It seemed that when things got too physical inside (particularly on offense with either Key or Striplin vs. Watkins/Feagin), then Tennessee was rightfully getting the call. Overall, I thought the refs let a lot of things go, but called it fairly evenly and consistently on both sides.

agree
they were equally bad and equally good for BOTH sides

Speaking of benchplay. Where has Striplin gone after having a massive game she has gone MIA.

Darby looked to be more worried about the officiating than playing basketball ball.
Honestly other than Jackson no one on our roster compares with theirs. Puckett and Powell played good games against them, but they are not five star players. They were not in high school and aren't now. The recruiting is the reason were not a top ten team. It is the only reason Kellie or any coach in the SEC could take that talent level SC has and win the conference just a fact. Our level of talent is right in there with Miss St, Ole Miss, Bama, Texas A&M who actually have more five star rated players than we do.

Tennessee is back. There will be changes. I don’t know if they will go another direction with coaching or not. The program will take care of itself from this point forward.

Because either starting today in practice they will prepare to win some games or there will be accountability.

Either way, it’s a win win for Tennessee.

One of the biggest flaws of NVs and people in general is they lack patience.

It hasn’t been easy but last night proved every single POINT I have made all season.

Tennessee can play with anyone. Tennessee is talented. Powell embarrassed the so called generational talent on the national stage with a play that I said if it was the other way around would be played 100 times on sports channels.

i stamp that. I’m locked in.

We are short on talent, especially in depth at the 3, 4, and 5 positions. The biggest talent deficient is in athletic abilit5y. We have 3-4 players at those positions who can shoot the ball well from the three, but are unable to get their shots off quickly or play man or zone defense.

Maybe put a pause on the program until we can catch up. Or we could address the issue of lack of development by the head coach in year five who spearheaded your stance.

I don't follow the recruiting stars in the Ladies game but from reading these post/threads I am under the impression that our recruits are = or close to equal with the top teams. I know in Football we are middle of pack in SEC and have been middle to near the bottom of standings for much of a decade before Hueple.
Are the girls overall rating in recruiting say for last 5 years top 2 in SEC, this is where I considered they were without researching recruiting.

Tennessee is no where near being short on talent. SC has four players that touch the court last night that are nowhere near 5-star college players… I don’t care how they were ranked coming out of HS.

Ranking the 5 best players on the court last night I would rate it 1. Rickea 2. Kamilla 3. Raven 4. Watkins 5. Sara

Next in line: Powell

Kitts or Tess Johnson are not 5-star caliber college players. Neither is PaoPao or Bree Hall.

I actually like how Bree Hall plays and think she’s a quality starter but this myth about superior talent on SC roster is ridiculous.

I loved how Kellie responded last night in the after game interview. She gave substance in her responses and remained so positive despite the defeat. I loved how she said that she hoped this game would serve as the standard for energy, focus and defensive efforts going forward. For some reason, I believe her, and I believe this team will welcome that challenge. I think we win the remainder of our regular season games, and give SC another close game in Columbia.

😆

This is almost an exact duplicate of your other drive-by post in this forum.

To apply one of your very own posts in the men's bb forum, "Your trolling skills are weak."
LOL! Did I hurt your little feelings? I’m tired of that crap product she puts on the floor. Yea, keep defending her and the program. It’s embarrassing that the program has fallen as far as it has and it’s not improving. Pat has to be shaking her head.

Striplin only played 9 minutes. Probably should have played more to see if she could make some threes for us.....
Striplin had no one to match up with, although she did pin Feagin deep a few times drew fouls on her. But on the other side, she can't guard any of SC's forwards. I'm not surprised that her or Darby didn't get much PT; they were out of their league. I AM surprised Wynn didn't get in more (did we see her at all in the 2nd half?), especially since Spear was a non-factor.

@Vols2015 I can see it being using as a measuring stick.. I just don’t understand how the staff expected the team to get there without holding themselves to a higher standard of COACHING/LEADERSHIP. There are still some areas where the in-game management has deficits.

It’s easy to cross your T’s and dot your I’s against the number #1 team in WBB, but the staff is just as responsible for how the team performs down to competition as well.
I don’t think anyone on the staff really owns responsibility right now for underachieving this season.

10? Try more than 15....

We have talent: It's a good starting 5 that we put on the floor---not as good as SC, but a solid groups. The big difference is that Key
doesn't have the agility, offensive skills or stamina to be a real force on the court.

Cardosa =18 points, 10 rebounds, played 29 minutes.
Key = 2 point, 5 rounds, 19 minutes.

Key has worked hard to come back, played hard last night, but just doesn't give us enough to win a game like this.
Puckett is a good player, had a strong game last night, lacks a bit of the athleticism you'd like at that position.

Our guards have talent but are far too inconsistent with their play and their decision-making. Huge game last night and, while they played hard,
they did not play well offensively at all.

Otherwise, we certainly lack quality depth, especially at forward but at all positions.
