Gary Parrish's take on BP and Tennessee

So you dont think that the Shockers are going to increase Marshall's salary and buy out after this year to ward off would be suitors???

They very well might, but how much? Mehta kinda raise did he get after last years run? Not all that much.

And with Marshall it's not entirely about money, he wants to prove himself at a high major, he has made this known.

I believe the rewards outweigh the risks.

If you have Pearl and Marshall sitting in front of you, both say, Mr. hart I will come to Tennessee for $2.5 million.

Who do you think Hart chooses? Not who do you want, or who would you prefer, who do you think Hart hires?

This is too easy... Bruce Pearl. Why? Because he knows what it takes to turn UT basketball into a winner. Been there, done that.

If UT can get on a win streak, win the SEC tourney, go to the dance and make relevant noise all this chatter may die down. IF....

Pearl could get teams into a bidding war, no?

If he's the hottest name on the market, you're telling me only 1 or 2 schools would want him?

He could, but it's unlikely. I'd guess there will be a couple of schools that try to hire Pearl. But it's not as if Pearl and his agent will be sitting back and taking offers and then taking offer A to school B and say "match it" and when they do, he takes it to school C and says "match it."

Bidding wars typically happen when a coach is at a job and then someone tries to hire him away. There's more negotiating power there. Pearl doesn't have that kind of leverage.

What is your point in all this? Are you trying to imply that Pearl is out of UT's price range?

Hart would likely choose Marshall. That's not happening though.

I don't really care who Gary Parrish thinks we should hire.

Besides, Mike Hamilton did the hiring in the last go-round. Unless Parrish has a high opinion of Hamilton, there's reason to believe that Hart may do a better job?

BTO,

Hiring Marshall would cost more than Pearl right now. He is a hotter commodity and doesn't have the baggage that Pearl does. Whoever hires Pearl still has to go before the NCAA as it stands right now.

Reasons why he would cost more:
1. Currently has a $500k buyout
2. Wichita State would be crazy not to match dollars even beyond CGM's market value
3. Marshall is in a current job
4. Bruce Pearl has baggage
5. Bruce Pearl has no buyout

Whichever one he can talk down to $1.75 mil.

I quoted and replied to a poster who said we could get Pearl for $1.5m, you then quoted and replied to me (I was responding to him) and were informing me why it would be so cheap to hire him (which seemingly meant you were agreeing with the poster I quoted). That's where this all started.

My point the entire time has been, I highly doubt if you've got 10+ teams wanting Pearl (what someone in another thread said), and that's he's a top 5 coach (what another person said), that you're gonna get him for $1.5 million (what the poster I quoted said).

If you don't think Pearl likes money, and will attempt to get the most he can, then I'm not sure what to tell you. He still has a mansion in the area he's trying to unload, I'm sure he would like a salary that he wouldn't really have to worry about that house anymore.

So, my point being, if you've got Pearl who's going price is gonna be similar to say Gregg Marhsall, who do you think Hart goes with?

You can not guarantee me that Pearl won't demand $2.5 million, you also can't tell me that Marshall will demand $3 million. Just because Wichita State offers more doesn't mean he has to accept, it's not all about money to Marshall and he's made that clear. He makes 1.6 iirc, what if he takes $2 from Tennessee?

For arguments sake let's say, as I said, you've got Marhsall and Pearl, same price. The only differences, Marshall has a 500k buyout and Pearl has baggage. Who's Hart picking?

It is extremely unlikely that Pearl will get a $2.5 million salary starting out at his next job IMO.

If Marshall takes $2 million or less to come to UT he should fire his agent. He deserves more than that at a job like this.

I don't know who Hart is picking but my guess would be Marshall. If Marshall makes a run in the tourney again, he'd be a $3 million coach and the hottest name in college bball and has no baggage.

3. Pearl's not in a position to leverage himself for some ridiculous amount
4. Marshall is worth more $ than Bruce Pearl right now
5. Bruce would not give UT a discount.
6. Pearl has no buyout, Marshall does
7. Marshall has more negotiating power and that could go up again this NCAAT

Agree with it all. If you can get Pearl for 1.5 I think hart seriously considers it. If all these schools come after Pearl and his price goes up, and he and Marshall are even close to the same amount, you take Marshall and don't think twice.

That's all I've been saying.

I think the likelihood of Pearl being available for $1.5 million is greater than the likelihood that Marshall and Pearl can be obtained for the same amount.

But given Tenn Athletic Department Financial issues it is seriously doubtful that they will spend 2-2.5 mill on a new basketball coach (as a starting salary)....

But beyond that it should be noted that Bruce Pearl was not even making 2.5 mill per year when he was terminated.

That is correct, but coaching salaries gave definitely inflated.

Pearl was top 3 behind Cal and Donovan right? To be top 3 now in the SEC, $2.5m would be necessary.

I'm sorry how many final fours has Pearl been to?

/thread

SEC COY twice.
National COY once (IIRC)
First coach in the history of the school to get to the Elite 8.
Lost by one point to miss Final Four.
Took us to the only #1 ranking I can remember in my 35 years.

I just don't get the constant degrading of BP's record at UT...he's the only coach in the history of the program who took us to an Elite 8 and had us 1 point away from a Final Four.

He's served his time. It's time to bring him back and let him right the ship that all but sank in his absence.

I just do not believe that whether CBP lands at UT or somewhere else that he will get anywhere near 2.5 mill. If I am wrong I will take my lumps.
