Not that it is a huge deal, but many of the ABC games are regional in nature and therefore not national games. I'd be willing to wager that ND has been on national TV many more times in the past 7 years. I mean really, if you are trying to compare which program is more national in nature you are fighting a losing battle. ND gets more national press win or lose than Tenn. gets. Period.
Tennessee's games on ABC were national games. The SEC has a contract with CBS and ESPN, and those games are national. The few games that Tennessee has played on ABC were teams like Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Florida State, Auburn, UCLA, Northwestern, Ohio State, etc. and were all NATIONAL. I agree that ND gets more TV appearances than UT, but I would also say that ND has at least 2 or 3 games each season where viewership is very low. Currently ND's national press is about losing and how Faust's teams were never this bad. ND's record the past few seasons is their worst since I think the early 1960's.
Yes I am a dedicated fan. Did not take much to find the info since its in the 2004 Tennessee Football Guide, which is available at all fine grocery stores and bookstores in Tennessee. Or you can just view the Guide at utsports.com if you want. Its available world-wide... you just have to have adobe acrobat to read it (which is also a free download). Oh, and btw, I have a very active life in my church, my home, and at work. The fact that you either had all that tv information, or that you bothered to looked all of it up does say something (Either you are a very dedicated fan, or you truly have no life).
Its not arbitrary, I just went back to the season at which Tennessee has had a higher winning percentage than ND. If you started from the present and went back each season, like 2004 to 03, or 2004 to 02, or 2004 to 01, etc. You have to go back to 1923 before Notre Dame has a higher winning pct than Tennessee. You are lucky I went back that far, because most comparisons only go back to 1950 to compare 'modern day football'. By your logic, Yale has 17 National Championships. Does that make Yale a better football team in 2004? The AP did not even start voting on a National Champion until 1936! The Coaches Poll did not start until 1950..... and Notre Dame does have 2 "consensus" national championships since 1950. Guess what? Tennessee also has 2 "consensus national championships since 1950.Also, please stop picking arbitrary years when trying to compare yourself with ND. You say a debate is won with facts, yet you continually throw out excuses and half truths. The facts are: ND has more national championships, more Heisman trophy winners, and the best all time winning percentage. Live with it!
ND has 4 AP national championships between 1936-1949. ND has 2 "consensus" retroactive poll championships prior to 1936. However, like I stated above, Yale has 17 "consensus" retroactive poll championships.
And you ought to be thanking the Vols for beating the crap out of the Tide for the past decade, because they are 3rd all-time in winning percentage. But guess what.... they stink just like Notre Dame.
