Good News on Stokes

I would think stud basketball propects would give up their HS Sr. season for a chance to play an extra half year against college talent if they are one and done talent. Just seems to good to be true for us, I hope he can enroll and play.

But many don't have academics in order to get it done. Andre Dawkins at Duke skipped his entire senior year and enrolled at Duke a year early. He was playing an entire year of college ball when he should be playing his senior year in high school.

This is exactly why I think the NCAA will drag their feet passing him through the clearinghouse. The NCAA will see this as setting a dangerous precedent and the only way they can stop it is to delay their ruling. If he comes here I expect us to be asking Hart to demand a ruling quickly.

Yes, just read that in commercial appeal. I bet NCAA doesn't let this happen. Honestly, as much as I would love to have him this year, it doesn't pass the smell test. What would keep kids from graduating HS in 3 years so they can play Bball.

Sidelined prep star Jarnell Stokes may be at college soon

I didn't realize that, I hope its a possibility then. I guess he graduated a year early not skipped his senior year?

I don't think they can keep it from happening but they can darn sure spend the better part of January with the paperwork underneath a large pile collecting dust.

Tony Delmonico played Baseball here in what would have been his sr year after getting his GED.

If you can give up your whole season for a whole season of college ball, I think a lot would do that. But there's a sort of inertia about switching everything mid-season that makes it a lot weirder, imo. Hard to start a season with a team and bail for greener pastures after a month. Especially when you'll get to those greener pastures at the back of the line because you're behind on months of practice.

And, as has been pointed out, how many of those one and done guys have the academics to graduate a semester early?

Not sure which it was, nor am I sure if it makes a difference. He simply decided not to attend his senior year of school, and rather enrolled at Duke. Not sure if he did the GED thing like Delmonico, or if he had enough credits to graduate in three years from high school. In either case, he enrolled at Duke and played basketball for them a year earlier than expected.

Things are shaping up the way that the OP has stated. Stokes' old man just came out and said that Stokes will definitely be enrolling in January somewhere. Neither Kentucky nor Memphis has the scholarships for him, nor will eitehr program allow him much PT this season (probably). He could come right into either UT or Arky and come off the bench to contribute, and he seems to be very high on UT. I'd expect him to commit within before XMas so his commitment isn't overshadowed by the holidays.

I think that means he can start practicing around Jan 12th, when classes restart.

It was the Dawkins kid.

First of all, I really hope all of this is right.

Second of all, why is he limited to practicing when classes start? I thought there were only two requirements for him to start practicing:

1. December semester is over
2. He's enrolled in January classes

I'm thinking of football players (Bray, Fugate) who have come in for December bowl practice.

I have lived in Memphis the past three years. During this time, I've been fortunate enough to become close with several individuals within the UM athletic department and basketball program. I was eating dinner tonight at Gus's Chicken with one of my contacts, which is an excellant choice if you're ever in town, and he gave me some great news regarding the Stokes recruitment. Stokes has been very open about his intentions with the Memphis coaching staff throughout this process. Earlier this fall, most on the staff felt that Stokes was on the verge of committing. However, over the course of the past month (especially after the TSSAA's decision to declare Stokes ineligible for this year) Stokes has been wavering on signing with the Tigers. Tonight, my source told me that he believed after speaking with Stokes that Stokes was headed to UT unless something drastic happened in the next week.

I've never had any inside information, nor have I claimed to have any information until now. Additionally, I don't really care whether you chose to believe me. I don't know if Stokes will end up here, but I can say for a fact that the UM staff feels that this is one that is going to get away.

That sounds good. Martin needs a big boost for the basketball program now and this could be the boost that we need.
By the way, are you in the C.I.A.? "Met with one of my contacts at Gus's Chicken"
If you are in the C.I.A., be careful, because your contact could be a double spy. This could be mis information.

Yep. Andre Dawkins did it, and Andre Drummond at UConn was listed as part of the 2012 class for a while before coming in this year. IIRC his situation was a little different, though; I think he was already a senior who simply chose not to go to prep school or something, but I could be wrong.

When he says met with my source at Gus' Chicken, my mind immediately goes to Walt and Gus in Breaking Bad...

If he wasn't limited, he'd be practicing ASAP, in my estimation.

Maybe he will be. Guess you know more about it than I do.

But unless something different was going on with the football guys, he should be good to go as soon as he gets registered for classes.

Can't practice without getting cleared by the clearinghouse. As I stated earlier in thread I fear the NCAA will have an agenda with that.

Yes you can. You just can't play without getting cleared by the clearinghouse

You are partially correct. There is a window the NCAA allows for a ruling and then you are removed from practice. Its 10 days if I remember correctly.

I had a teammate who practiced for an entire season (but never played, obviously) without getting cleared by the clearinghouse. That was in '05 though, not sure if things have changed

I am certain that a player cannot practice more than a short period of time without getting thru the clearinghouse. I feel confident it is a 10 day grace period. I would expect stokes to start practices after christmas if things look good with the clearinghouse.
