Good News on Stokes

I am certain that a player cannot practice more than a short period of time without getting thru the clearinghouse. I feel confident it is a 10 day grace period. I would expect stokes to start practices after christmas if things look good with the clearinghouse.

Well, then either the rules have changed since then or we were cheating. I could've sworn it was just not playing. Didn't we have a situation where Gerald Williams practiced for ages before getting cleared too?

There have been a lot of football players that have been pulled of the practice field awaiting a ruling. Justin Hunter comes to mind.

I have lived in Memphis the past three years. During this time, I've been fortunate enough to become close with several individuals within the UM athletic department and basketball program. I was eating dinner tonight at Gus's Chicken with one of my contacts, which is an excellant choice if you're ever in town, and he gave me some great news regarding the Stokes recruitment. Stokes has been very open about his intentions with the Memphis coaching staff throughout this process. Earlier this fall, most on the staff felt that Stokes was on the verge of committing. However, over the course of the past month (especially after the TSSAA's decision to declare Stokes ineligible for this year) Stokes has been wavering on signing with the Tigers. Tonight, my source told me that he believed after speaking with Stokes that Stokes was headed to UT unless something drastic happened in the next week.

I've never had any inside information, nor have I claimed to have any information until now. Additionally, I don't really care whether you chose to believe me. I don't know if Stokes will end up here, but I can say for a fact that the UM staff feels that this is one that is going to get away.

You had me at Gus's Chicken. Did get gravy with your fries ?

Yeah, I do remember that now. So what happened with Williams? Did he pass clearinghouse but still have to pass something else?

I really don't remember that far back. My experience with the NCAA doesn't go back that far. Sometimes a kid might get through the clearinghouse but not meet SEC requirements but I don't know if that happened with GW or not.

Great news man. I hope your contacts are correct. After reading some of the posts, it sounds very promising.

GBO!!!

The typical "we don't want him, he's a drama queen" is coming out from some Memphis fans now.

This is exactly why I think the NCAA will drag their feet passing him through the clearinghouse. The NCAA will see this as setting a dangerous precedent and the only way they can stop it is to delay their ruling. If he comes here I expect us to be asking Hart to demand a ruling quickly.

I would swear a kid did this at Duke within the last few years.

Edit: forget that about a Duke player enrolling at mid term. I was thinking of Dawkins and he enrolled an entire year early. The Murphy kid also enrolled a year early this year.

according to my source who speaks to the Memphis staff - as recently as yesterday they didn't feel like Stokes was a Vol. TIFWIW

He will be able to play and play often this year if he enrolls in January, imo. One poster said he would come in as the 6th man and should be starting by the end of the regular season. I agree with that assessment, wholeheartedly. With the kind of God-given ability he has, nothing short of eventually starting should be expected this year...

That would be me and I appreciate the unofficial endorsement of my opinion. :hi:

I don't think they can keep it from happening but they can darn sure spend the better part of January with the paperwork underneath a large pile collecting dust.

What pile? There shouldn't be a lot of paperwork this time of year. I honestly would expect a quick ruling on him due to this fact alone.
