He was a major target before

laughed, showed his NFL ring and current ESPN contract

Then said thank you!

No he wasn't. Lane Kiffin was the #1 target. Troy Calhoun was the #2 target. Nobody else was even a close 3rd according to information Clay Travis obtained and put in his book On Rocky Top. Keep in mind that he worked directly with Hamilton on this book and it was before he became a major tool and had that afternoon radio show.

I don't doubt a bit that Hamilton did not contact Gruden in 08, but he was never a realistic choice because he had just been fired from Tampa and I am sure that he wanted some time off.

Just heard the UF announcer from Jacksonville say that he thinks CDD is gone after this year and that HE thinks that Gruden is in. What does everybody think about that??:unsure:

Late to the party...but...FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING GOOD AND SACRED...for the last time..HE!! NO!!

I have always thought of Dooley as our Mike Shula. Nice guy, good recruiter and someone to stabilize the program; but I would say move over Saban, Gruden is the big man on campus now.

I've never understood all the hoopla in regards to Gruden? Yeah he won a super bowl with the Bucs but he has never been a head coach at the college level. He won in the NFL but what makes you think he could win at the college level?

Dooley will be the coach at UT for many years to come. :clapping:

U said all that just to start yet ANOTHER ridiculous Gruden thread.

I didnt start another gruden thread, this was about a bunch of different schools. Gruden was mentioned by herby when asked about who would be coaching at Arkansas in 2013. I said at the beginning that i support the coach of UT.

Gruden also took the raiders to the super bowl. He is considered one of the great teachers in the NFL. Can he recruit? I would say with his resume it shouldn't be too hard.

Yes, and very carefully disguised as a "Herbstreit" thread. That takes brains.:acute:

Wow, you are exactly right. Honestly, I dont give a $h!t who the football coach is as long as they win. I said at the beginning that i support the coach.

Kirk-streit has always given UT short shrift in the past. He's never been a fan of the Big Orange, so I never expect much of anything positive from him vis-a-vis Vols.

Wrong again. Calls were made to dungy and gruden and neither was interested. Then the search began.

Don't get me wrong. I think all this hot seat talk, and Gruden stuff is ridiculous...at this point in time. Perfectly relevant right after losing to Kentucky. However, I don't think the job was as attractive to Gruden in the past 3-4yrs as it is today. What coach would not want to have a 1st Rd caliber QB, and 3 WR's who will likely be playing on Sunday's within the next 1-2yrs? Plus and offensive line that has a few NFL caliber players.

Nevertheless, when you take a step back and look objectively at what Dooley has had to endure and how far he's gotten the program, in terms of talent, experience and depth on the roster, it all seems even more silly for media folks to keep bringing this up.

Saban struggled the first 2yrs as well, if memory serves me right. Then suddenly Bama breaks out of the doldrums and he's viewed as a genius.

Has Gruden ever recruited? If not, there is zero assurance he could be a good CFB coach

He was less than a major target. Interest was gauged. At that point in his career and where we were there was no way. It's still very, very, very unlikely. But, people would be shocked if they knew some of the conversations that have taken place since.

That just a fallacious presumption people commonly make. Pete Carroll came from the NFL and didn't have any experience recruiting either. Didn't stop him from both coaching and recruiting lights out.

Jim Mora Jr. is doing a great job recruiting at UCLA. NFL HC experience sells itself.

Gruden was still the coach at Tampa Bay at the time.

Didn't say he couldn't do it just that there is no guarantee. There are other NFL coaches that have failed terribly.

There's no guarantee in coaching period. Bama could have a rash of injuries and make Saban look like a has been. You never know, but coaches with NFL credentials command a lot of respect from recruits and players alike.
