HBO's "Game of Thrones"

This is very silly and strangely defensive position. There were thousands of people complaining online about how dark it was, do they all have poor eyesight or busted TVs?

Some people take valid criticism of a tv show like it's a personal attack on their character, lol.

There are also a lot of idiots in the world.

I feel very sad for the book worshippers who aren’t going to get an ending.
Martin makes $15 million annually in royalties from the show... and the popularity of the show has also contributed heavily to his book sales. HBO has been good to him. I wonder if his wealth has impacted his incentive to finish at all? Or if it's just a matter of having too many characters and story arcs?

Dorne is much more involved in the books. In the Tv show they barely gave them any story. I view the show and books as different things at this point.

IIRC, Doran acted like he wanted to remain neutral if not remain loyal to Cersei/Tommen and that frustrated Ellaria. I don't remember if he was killed in the books or if that's just tv show. But yea they seem to be heading towards overthrowing him in the books. But I think whichever Martell he sent over to attempt to wed Dany was killed I think.
Frog was burned iirc

He says he will finish. Writer's block? He says he is frustrated. Seems when you are getting so close to the end, it would be easier than building the story...

For me, the large scale ideas in creative projects are the most exciting part. It's hard to stay motivated through all the work and fine details.

Not really. Unless you have an end already in mind or written, writing the ending can be tricky. Or connecting A to Z can be hard to do. I'm an amateur writer and it's a lot harder than some imagine.

I'd imagine he knows how he wants the books to end. But as GV suggested I think there's a lot of story and connecting to get there.

But he's got ASOIAF which still has at least 2 more books to go. He's got his fire and ice prequel books. HBO is doing more GoT tv series. Syfy picked up a different book series of his that he still writes and made a tv series out of that.

He got super popular late in his life. I think he said before he likes writing multiple different books. Focusing on one series for long periods of time gets weary. Thats why he likes having different things going at the same time. i sometimes have doubts that he'll finish ASOIAF

This. And sometimes the ending you have in mind at the beginning tends to be far different than the ending. For one of my stories, I planned on killing off the main hero at the end. Events changed and I saw how much people really enjoyed the character. So...he ended up living in the end.

I think the series has ruined the books to an extent. It's hard to kill off a fan favorite at the very end.

It wouldn't ruin it for me at least. For me, the tv series is what got me interested. It's great. But I have to tell myself not to compare the two. If I did, the tv show would be much less entertaining.

I read all the books between seasons 4-5 I think it was. I'm not sure if I'll ever read another series I enjoy this much. The books for me are another level of writing and I know I'd respect however he writes them. What characters live, die, and how it all happens. I'm confident it will still be as thorough and deep as every book so far. Part of what got me hooked was characters I thought would be around forever were killed off. And they were interesting characters that I enjoyed following, but I saw how that made the story better.

I'd think it would be extremely difficult as an author to tell a story as long and massive as ASOIAF and keep it interesting but he's doing it masterfully.

the show might be totally different than where he meant to go? I am just now reading book two, but didn't his last book end with Jon Snow maybe dying? Perhaps he wanted Jon Snow to stay dead and now Kit is beloved and he's odds on favorite to be King. If anything like that has happened, I wish he'd just go ahead and do it the way he meant it to be. I think it would be great to see how he wanted it to go vs. where the show took us.

I think he’s had it written long ago. Just waiting for the void to maximize cash out.

I agree with this. Sales of the books would have been slightly cannibalized by the TV show hitting its fever pitch during the past 3-4 seasons ratings-wise. Best to let the show ride off into the sunset and then drum up the hype again by announcing that Winds of Winter is releasing circa 2021 and Dream of Spring in 2024 or so.

I also don't think GRRM wanted active comparisons between the books and the TV show. Easier to keep them separate by letting the TV show end and then resuming the release of the books.

I hope this is the case, but I could also see how the events of the show creating a serious writer’s block. There’s always a general outline of events, but in the moment you never know which creative choices you’ll make, and now in the back of his head he’s got these other events and endings from the show. Could see that making it hard to write with true freedom.

Lines and lines at book stores paling in comparison to the online advance orders. Printing money and all he has to do is stay alive.

So what option does the North have?

Dornes full army is as rested as you can be. Perhaps sending Yara to go pick them up and meet at Dragonstone is an option.

Is there anyone left of the Tullys? Who is over there right now? maybe they will join.

The vale probably has a few troops. Doubt the brought their entire army to the battle of the bastards.

there has to be an army from Essos that will join.
I was arguing to my son, doesn't matter what Martell and Tyrell personalities got killed off, those kingdoms or regions are still out there and they don't like the Lannisters

No spoilers, but I found the OST from the Battle at Winterfell on YouTube (thank the various gods, I've listened to it a couple times now). Ramin Djawadi deserves at least three Emmy's for this. I can't think of a better soundtrack for an episode of TV, and I'm a series snob (the greatest shows are the Sopranos, the Wire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and the X-Files, not in that order and fight me). The tension he builds throughout the episode is amazing. Parts of it remind me of the Joker theme from Dark Knight (probably the greatest character theme of all time), dark tones and mechanical ticking slowly evolving into madness. And that slow piano build at the end, a throwback to Cersei and the Sept scene (one of my favorites). Such despair and loss in every moment; the music keeps dragging and dragging, but in a wonderful way that keeps increasing the despair, hopelessness, and tension. Then the strings kick up at the end in a flourish worthy of the conclusion.

I know there has been criticism of this episode, but the music is a masterpiece. Kudos Ramin.

There were moments where the score took center stage for me. I love a good soundtrack. This is one of em. Hans Zimmers Dark Knight is one of the best, but I think my favorite Zimmer is actually the Black Hawk Down soundtrack. Should give that a listen if you haven’t!

Absolutely, it did as well for me. Beautifully conducted, I'm not exaggerating when I say it is a work of art.
My favorite of Hans will probably always be Interstellar. But I'm a sci fi nerd and that is one of my favorite films. Close second is Dark Knight. That Joker theme, man it blew me away in the theater. I'm not familiar with Black Hawk Down, I'll check it out.

Intersmeller? Not a good film. Should have never made it out of the wormhole.
