HBO's "Game of Thrones"

No spoilers, but I found the OST from the Battle at Winterfell on YouTube (thank the various gods, I've listened to it a couple times now). Ramin Djawadi deserves at least three Emmy's for this. I can't think of a better soundtrack for an episode of TV, and I'm a series snob (the greatest shows are the Sopranos, the Wire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and the X-Files, not in that order and fight me). The tension he builds throughout the episode is amazing. Parts of it remind me of the Joker theme from Dark Knight (probably the greatest character theme of all time), dark tones and mechanical ticking slowly evolving into madness. And that slow piano build at the end, a throwback to Cersei and the Sept scene (one of my favorites). Such despair and loss in every moment; the music keeps dragging and dragging, but in a wonderful way that keeps increasing the despair, hopelessness, and tension. Then the strings kick up at the end in a flourish worthy of the conclusion.

I know there has been criticism of this episode, but the music is a masterpiece. Kudos Ramin.

Thanks for bringing that music over. I agree with you about The Wire, Breaking Bad and possibly Mad Men. (Have yet to watch all the Sopranos or X-Files) Game Of Thrones will be right up there for me. I think it will be an interesting ending and it has been beyond entertaining and heart pounding. One of the great all time shows, for sure.

GOT is right outside the group I listed as far as great shows go imo. The first three seasons of GOT were absolutely amazing and worthy of being included in any discussion as the best of all time. When they ran out of GRRM source material the show noticeably suffered. Still good, but not great as it was. I put it outside of my top five I listed, but barely. It is hanging out with Lost, another underappreciated show that suffered from weird writer randomness. I hope the show writers of GOT can bring it home, it has been a fantastic story to watch unfold. This season I absolutely loved the second episode. It felt like "classic" GOT, lots of dialogue and character development before the Battle of Winterfell. I also loved the Dothraki scene in the latest episode. Between the music (Ramin is a GOD) and epic scene of the flaming swords charging across the field, I got a little choked up. GOT is easily among the discussion of best shows of all time, and I wouldn't argue much with it.

There were moments where the score took center stage for me. I love a good soundtrack. This is one of em. Hans Zimmers Dark Knight is one of the best, but I think my favorite Zimmer is actually the Black Hawk Down soundtrack. Should give that a listen if you haven’t!

The only person who could do a better job at the soundtrack would have been John Williams or Zimmer in my opinion.

the show might be totally different than where he meant to go? I am just now reading book two, but didn't his last book end with Jon Snow maybe dying? Perhaps he wanted Jon Snow to stay dead and now Kit is beloved and he's odds on favorite to be King. If anything like that has happened, I wish he'd just go ahead and do it the way he meant it to be. I think it would be great to see how he wanted it to go vs. where the show took us.

Potentially. I saw an interview Martin did some time ago about creative writing and even he says "There are no bad ideas in writing. But there are some ideas you look back on afterwards and think it wasn't such a good idea." Paraphrased mind you, but any writer will tell you they had some things in their head in the beginning that just didn't work out in the long run or they look back and think "WTH was I thinking?"

I typically post my writing online and some of the times, I've done it chapter by chapter as I've been writing them. I have my end in mind, but the "fans" get into a certain aspect or character far more than what you had in mind for the ending and you end up changing it. The same could be said for the series changing the way Martin may have had GoT ending in the beginning. I haven't read the books yet, so I don't know how the series is differing from the books at this point. And it very well may come down to the ending being different than what he had in mind.

As for GRRM finishing the books, my bet is he will die first. Dude is an overweight smoker diabetic alcoholic....but then again, those are the ones that live forever.

Danged if I'm still not catching things I should have remembered...

Why did the White Walker not kill Sam in the Season 2 finale? What made him important enough not to kill?

Been wondering the same. Seen a few theories. It is strange that they left him alive back in that episode. Even stranger is that episode at the end of season 2 where it happened was titled “Valar Morghulis.” We know that saying means “All men must die.” Well now, just yesterday, the official GOT twitter account tweets out just two words. “Valar Morghulis.” Nothing else.

🤔

He needed Jon Snow’s true identity revealed?

Stark blood is something special in this, and Jon is half-Stark through his mother

My guess was Sam getting a pass from the WW was for a set piece GRRM had planned for a season or 2 later, that was scrapped by the writers when GRRM stepped away from being active in the show's writing.

Just rewatched ep3. I'm hindsight, I'm embarrassed that I didn't see Arya as the NK killer.
"And blue eyes"
Arya gets that look
Witch gives her a smile

Pretty damn obvious

Jon Snow is THE central character in the books...he might die at the end, but he ain't dying till the end.

He has said over and over again..the end will basically be the same. Just that how they get there will be different.

I somtimes question whether he will finish the book series. 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2005 were the first four book releases. A Dance with Dragons came out in 2011. 8 years later and the 5th book still isn't done. And we know it's not the last. There is at least one more after that.

Between the tv show, his other book series, and other tv shows for his other series( besides the HBO GoT prequel upcoming; syfy network did one recently for his Wildcards series)....he's being pulled in many directions and it seems like his interest in A song of Ice and Fire has waned.
He's a prick

I'm rewatching now. Apparently my TV has a "movie" setting. It's way better. I usually watch in "dynamic".
I rewatched on my newer 4k Vizio tv tonight. I finally see why poeple are so pissed. It was hard to tell what was going on, at times. The ironic thing is my living room tv is an old Samsung plasma in 1080p. While I thought the episode was a little dark, I didn't have any trouble keeping up with what was going on.

It's almost like the technology is too advanced for dark pictures...if that's even possible.
