HBO's True Detective

Been meaning to ask this on here but kept forgetting....anyone else get a David Lynch influence every once in a while on this show?

I've heard/read more than a few people talk about how last week's episode was obviously heavily influenced by (or a borderline ripoff of) Mulholland Drive.

hmmm, it's been a long time since I've seen that movie, but the scene with the male singer reminded me so much of something that could be seen on Twin Peaks.

Basically every show I love has periods of lulls as they build the story. I think people are really impatient. This is how a lot of people felt about the Wire Seasons 1 and 2, but then in hindsight love the season. GoT has slow, storybuilding periods. Hell, Breaking Bad would have episodes that were nearly 45 minutes of family fighting. Or the episode where they try to catch the fly.

I get that it's slow-paced, but I don't think it's been bad or boring.

Last season of TD didn't take off until mid way thru. That said, it was still a better show than what we've seen this season to this point.

Agreed on both points. When you change the characters and story completely, you gotta be prepared for a totally different dynamic. They caught lightning in a bottle last season. If they go 5 years and never outdo season 1, it could still be considered a very good show.

Lulls I agree with, but I have to disagree with the last statement. Those first few episodes have been boring sans the last 5 to 10 minutes of each one.

I think what you had with the first season is that it had two great actors that everyone liked so even if there wasn't much action going on those two actors kept it interesting still. It also had the creepy, backwoods factor maintained through the entire season. This particular story this season isn't too entertaining imo.

I won't disagree that it's still too early to make a call on the whole season.

So the last 10 minutes were great, but what exactly were they wanting to accomplish with the raid?

They wanted to arrest the bald headed dude. Weren't fully expecting a shoot out, but then again, SWAT wasn't "available" and the mayor may have provided some foreshadowing of what was about to go down.

That seemed like a setup all the way. I didn't think the mayor could get any more despicable.

Safe to assume those were the mexicans that Vince Vaughn wanted to get rid of so he could sling rocks in his club.

So what's the back story on Colin Farrell and the bartender? There has to be a crazy story there.

this show is definitely getting better as it goes. who was it that questioned how many people they were taking to arrest the bald headed mexican before they left? set up all the way...
