HBO's True Detective

I don't think Frank is going to live long enough to worry about raising a child, just my guess.

There's only 3 left? Thank God!

It's painful. I have had to fight off falling asleep nearly every episode.

They have way too much background crap going on. It's possibly the worst season of an HBO series I have ever seen and I've watched a ton of HBO in my life.

If you think it's that bad, why are you still watching it?

Because he's invested and my guess he wants it to be good to him, so he's trying to stick with it.

Plus that's a bit of a catch 22. If he says it's bad and keeps watching, then he's asked why he's still watching. If he says it's bad and stops watching, then he'll be told he gave up too quickly and/or he'll be asked "How do you know it's bad if you stopped watching?"

The reveal Sunday night was good but at the same time wasn't really hard to see coming.

I don't think the season has been bad but it hasn't been anything special either. Taylor Kitsch has been terrible. I don't know if it's him or how it's been written, but his acting is cringe-worthy. His scene in the trailer with his mom where he was supposed to in a rage was one of the worst acted scenes in a quality show I've seen in a long time. I laughed so hard when he punched the wall and then stared at his mom, then yelled.

I'm not understanding all of the criticisms of the show, and calling it the worst HBO season ever is laughable (True Blood and Girls to name a few recent ones, Carnivale was one in the early 2000's that was freaking terrible). I think Farrell's performance as Velcoro is on par with McConaughey and Harrelson's in Season 1. Kitsch and McAdams have been solid, Vince Vaughn has been so-so. But, I'm enjoying the story and things are picking up quickly since last week's shootout.

Once again, this season does not match that of Season 1, as Pizzolatto put together a masterpiece both in script and casting. However, just because it doesn't match one of the finest seasons of a show in TV history, doesn't mean it's automatically terrible.

Don't think I like this season quite as much as you, I think you're a little kind to all the actors not named Farrell (especially Vaughn, even calling him "so-so" is extremely generous) but I still like it better than some others on here.

That being said, I don't want to take anything away from Pizzolatto and what he did with Season 1, but I think it's been pretty obvious that the show has missed Fukunaga as a director as much as anything. Visually this season has been far below the standard set last season and the raid-gone-wrong from two episodes ago seemed to unfold terribly to me, especially when thinking back to the McConaughey raid scene from last year.

I agree saying it's one of the worst seasons of anything ever on HBO is silly, but I disgree about the performances, especially Kitsch. Ferrell is the only one I'd call good, but even Vaughn and McAdams are great compared to Kitsch.

I agree but to fair, the Season 1 raid scene was straight up a masterpiece. There's little that can top that.

I'm pissed that we lost W. Earl Brown so quickly and that he didn't have a bigger role.

I would be interested to see how the general public, including myself, would feel about this show if this was season 1, and the first season had never happened.

Kitsch's character is fairly superfluous in this story in my opinion. This show could do a lot more without him, and focus on strengthening the other characters. The case got a lot more interesting last episode, though. I agree that Colin is every bit as good as McConaughey - he just doesn't have the nihilistic ramblings that people latched onto.

Pizzolato also worked on season 1 over the course of a decade, but had a year to write season 2. I don't think season 1 is legendary television or anything but it's sensible to expect a drop in quality. It's definitely not the worst HBO show ever.

Characters aren't very well written this season. Good actors like Farrell and Vaughn can compensate but it's obvious with the less talented actors on the show.

I said one of the worst I've watched.

Sopranos
Wire
True Blood (first few seasons)
John from Cincinnati
Rome
Game of Thrones
Hung
Deadwood
Boardwalk empire
Entourage

Im not sure I finished deadwood. I saw the first two seasons of Boardwalk. I watched the first two or three of true blood before it started getting too weird for me.

This season of true detective has been one of the worst seasons of anything I've watched on HBO. Are there worse seasons of HBO series out there? Sure. I don't watch everything they put out.

Why do I keep watching? Because the first season was awesome and it didn't really pick up steam til mid way thru so I'm hoping this season does the same.

Girls is the worst show on HBO in a long time. True Blood at least had some :boobies: Carnival was awesome I thought.

Mostly because I'm invested and I want it to be good. Also the fact that last year really picked up in episode 4. And after that 4th episode, the prior 3 episodes became instantly better because you could go back and rewatch and pick up on clues and things you missed the first time.

And I know that the best shows take time to develop. I don't think this is a slow developing story as much as it is just a mess of a show.

John from Cincinnati was one of the most bewildering and awful shows HBO has ever created. And I'm not talking about the show as a whole so much as each individual episode that was worse than the last.

I'm not going to say this is the worst or even one of the worst seasons of an HBO show but it's played out with more back story than plot line.

It's almost like the show runners read a novel that was heavy on back story in the first few chapters and adapted it into a show but couldn't figure out how to include everything while also keeping it interesting to the viewer.

If this season stood on its own, independent from season 1, I think it would be received better but season 1 was an all time great show...acting, plot line, intrigue, etc.
