Holy Crap -- basketball penalties

Fans trying to cover for Pearl is better than everyone else covering for Kiffin while he drove through yards drunk and took co-eds back to his bachelor pad.

Also, you keep bringing up Pearl turning Illinois in 20 years ago. Maybe it's the pot calling the kettle black but there is a big difference between making extra phone calls and giving a kid a vehicle/cash that totaled nearly 100,000 dollars.

But him making that call helped put that big arse target on his back. Rightly so, too.

If you're going to play the snitch, you better be prepared for the worse.

Actually, this is good news. CBP is one of the top 5 COACHS in the country. This is an ugly mark on his resume, and he'll be more likely to stay around for another 10 years to clean it up.

Those who say CBP should be gone are CRAZY! He could COACH a bunch of walk ons to compete for the SEC title. That's the important thing - he's a great coach. Unfortunally, recruiting is shisty, and he tried to play the game. We can't blame him for wanting to take it to the next level.

Give him time to clean it up.

Ive seen a lot of things on this board over the last three years, but I have never seen someone spin an issue of this proportion in the way you just did. May your glass never be half empty bud. On second thought, you don't need my wishes. You're all set.

Once the new governor's elected, we need a new president and a new AD, in that order.

Time to start fresh.

Like I said, it's close, but not rock bottom.

And no, because I could easily see Fulmer firing Dooley and making himself Head Coach. I don't even know if he could do that anyways, but he would undermine Dooley I believe.

That's one of the dumber things I've read.

I don't think Pearl should be fired for this. He is not the only coach in basketball that has done this. He did lie to the NCAA which makes us look bad, but he is being punished for it and very harshly at that. That is strike one for Pearl. If he committs any other major problem, then we should look at replacing him.

Mike Hamilton does deserve to be fired. Not for this incident alone, but for multiple incidents that have embarrased our university. All of the off the field(and court) incidents by football and basketball players, the Kiffin experiment, the Raleigh experiment and backing out of the UNC game. There are other problems too, but enough is enough. We need a change at the top.

THIS!!!!

This is what I've been saying. I don't think Bruce should be fired (but he has been knocked down a few pegs in my book) but we have had soooo much happen with our Athletic Department in these last three years and some people don't think we should fire Hamilton?

We need to cut off the rotten part of our program if we are ever going to heal, that's HAmilton.

That's probably true.

I think most schools would turn in a rival school if they were giving recruits money. I don't think many schools would turn someone in for making extra phone calls though.

I agree it's a little hypocritical on Pearl's part but there is definitely a difference between the two. A fairly large one.

and I think that's fair. Not being an alum, I don't quite take the same tack, but that makes complete sense to me. Exonerating the UT system, the structure of the AD vis a vis the greater university and the school administration is a bad idea IMO. Firing Hamilton does that as I see it. I like your earlier point that the Ath Dept needs to fall more closely under the auspices of the UT pres.

I don't see how firing Hamilton would exonerate anything about the UT system, because there's almost literally no structure in place above him to exonerate. If Hamilton were actually fired today, who would do it? Interim president Jan Simek? The governor? Jim Haslam? The UTK chancellor, who's been Hamilton's putative boss for only about 15 minutes?

MHF is looking continuously more ignorant with each passing season. Instead of being ashamed of what our program did, he is applauding the man that lied to the NCAA about this.

Bravo, sir, bravo.

Our program used burner phones...So did almost every other basketball program in the top 25...

I walked into the most gorgeous stadium in the country and I felt incredibly proud of my fandom.

I also am proud of how Mike handled the press conference and the situation. He dropped the hammer and should be viewed as more than a fundraiser. He is steering us safely through a storm.

He lied to the NCAA. They haven't completed their investigation yet. You lie to the NCAA, they will burn you. Dez Bryant, USC, etc. You don't lie to the NCAA.

This statement couldn't be more true if it came down a mountainside etched in stone tablets.

It was just freaking text messages. The penalties wouldn't have been very bad at all, but I'm afraid they're going to go nuts over the lying.

For full disclosure, I'm a Bammer. We've got a recent example. Jerrell Harris lied about getting a used laptop that was worth about $200. Telling the truth probably wouldn't have meant anything other than making a donation to charity. The lie cost him a suspension for half the 2009 season.

"Impermissable and excessive phone calls"

Really?

That rule is bogus...

If that is the worst thing Pearl and staff have done or ever do.... I'm ok with it. Now I do not like the fact that he lied about it....

Wow, I think Hamilton is steering us into a storm.

How proud are you of the fact that our football team has had two losing seasons in the last five and could be poised for a third? How proud are you that a bunch of our football players were involved in a brawl that resulted in an injured cop, and yet none of them missed a game? How proud were you last year when the Pilot robbery was a national story? How proud were you when a third of our basketball team got suspended last year? How proud have you been when Pearl has to keep kicking his players off the team? How proud were you when Tennessee hostesses became a national joke? How proud were you of Hamilton's bungled coaching search, when he got publicly turned down by the coaches of Utah and Air Force and Duke? How proud are you of our baseball team? How proud are you of the fact that the NCAA is investigating both of our major programs simultaneously?

To say that Hamilton is "steering us safely through a storm" is the most laughable thing I've read in awhile. There's never been a time in our history that Tennessee athletics have had a worse reputation or been a bigger embarrassment to the university and the state. Great leadership.

UT is punishing Pearle and his assistants by saving 3 million dollars in compensation, that's got to be a plus in Hamilton's favor. I'm sure that will placate the 'AA.

Take the hit and fire him, we are now handcuffed.

You are so right... we could hire Buzz back so we could enjoy Buzzball again or better still how bought bringing back Wade Houston... he he ... Pathetic, at least we have a coach who can stay with Calipari and that ugly blue bunch up north Tennessee...((( some call that Kentucky but I believe that gives them to much credit))

After everything that has occurred under the Mike Hamilton regime, isn't it finally time to say goodbye? How many more negative events need to happen to the once proud Tennessee Athletic Department before we realize what most already knew... he simply isn't a Tennessee guy, and it's time to move on. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fire this guy already. The way he has run this department has generated almost nothing but negativity. IT'S TIME.

So tell me when the 'AA comes down and bans us from postseason play do you still stick with him?

I will stick with Him as long as He is coaching those guys wearing Orange... I think he has been good for UT Basketball so far, I have not seen, nor have I hear it reported that we have any sanctions coming down on us other than those self emposed by the University... As for me, I will take a deep breath and wait and see :pirate: :worship:

That may come in time, and you may be right, but as for now, I say stay the course, and don't throw the baby out with the dirty wash

I tend to agree, but when you put it that way, I just really feel bad.

You guys do realize this is probably more than just calls outside the appropriate timing windows, right? They probably appropriated phones or tried to mask their calls and hide them from detection. This is not even remotely over, and I drink the Pearl kool-aid as much as anyone. I would wager he's not our head coach in two years.

As to Hamilton, it is past time to kick his ass to the curb.
