How Gundy almost became coach at UT

He's a man.

I think things worked out great for UT. Perhaps UT was paying penance from some past sin and now it's been liberated.

So I guess everybody is saying they are glad Hart and Cheek failed with hiring Gundy and Strong. Not going to disagree with that. The bigger question to me is why they even looked toward Gundy. They are not going to admit publicly that they also went after Jimbo Fisher early on and he passed quickly. All three of them played it to get a raise/extension and other considerations.

Jones was at least equal to Strong all along. Had more head coaching experience and beat Strong 2 out of 3 games. Everybody in the business knew Strong's recruiting coordinator was dirty from the Miami scandal. Gundy is an alum that's had as much or more success than anyone at Stillwater. Fisher was in training for the FSU HC job for years before he got it with numerous opportunities to leave that he passed on. Despite silly comments, FSU has a quality program.

So iHart/Cheek ended up with the best choice by totally lucking out since they did not want to go big.

That about nails it.

Not certain but it was my understanding that UT contacted him but never offered.

I'm much happier with CBJ.

We know.... show it on the field....hasn't done anything yet..... gotta win at least 7 games. We got it.

It's a mantra we should repeat...over and over

I think butch is a better fit too, but lets not act like we wouldnt have been pleased had Gundy accepted the job.

I didn't want him...and I'm being honest...he was the candidate ahead of Strong who I was excited about. But when the flirtation with Gundy started, I couldn't get past him leaving his alma mater for any job...didn't sit well

You were right and another or 2 did the same damn thing used the BIG ORANGE to get a pay raise dont blame them but it still pisses me of.:banghead2:

Why does that piss you off? It happens all the time. Hell, Fulmer's agent used float the rumor out there that NFL teams were interested. The only people that believed it were the sheepiest of sheep and Hamilton. Of course Hamilton responded with an extension and raise every time.

I think Pearl followed suit when Cal left for UK and the rumors of Pearl to Memphis popped up.

It happens.

God has a way of closing and opening the right doors. He has in my life multiple times, and led me to an incredible situation. Does God care about UT football? Dunno. But I know he cares about Butch Jones, and it seems he opened and closed the right doors to get Butch to a place where his hard work can really pay off and where his abilities will be showcased and appreciated.

Very glad and proud to have Butch as our coach. At this point, I wouldn't trade him for anyone. He has done a perfect job this far. I hope with all my big orange heart that he gets the results he wants on the field.

I'm done pondering who could have had, wanted, or didn't want the job when it was available. The train has left the station. Let's see if Butch can get it to where it needs to go.

Bought my ticket. And I'm loving the ride so far!

if UT really went after Fisher and Gundy, then at least they went after coaches who have done something. (although I think Fisher is overrated) Big step up from last 2 searches if the they went after Gundy, Strong, and Fisher first

Almost took it because of scheduling.
"“At some point, that's where we thought we were going to go,” Gundy said."

So because his AD was scheduling too tough, he almost took an SEC job where he would have to play Alabama, Florida, and Georgia every year? How can a CBS reporter just uncritically swallow and spit back that horsecrap?

He needs to just come out and say he used UT to get a raise. Everyone knows it and nobody is mad.

Thought T Boone would have been a little smarter than to get out-leveraged by Gundy. Or maybe it's a case of more money than sense.

Another thread about u didn't come so we didn't really need u..typical vol nation. .lol

Im sorry all of u would be on gundy as bad if not worse than cbj.

I did not like gundy coming to ut at all but would have been on the train more than cbj but im starting to like cbj. Saying that he has to beat bama and fla bottom line. I do not want a coach like Johnny majors that it takes 10 years to win an sec championship.
