Glen Stanley
Its no big surprise Glen Stanleys departure from USC is a lot more complicated than other Trojan signees.
My colleague Chris Hays outlined Stanleys campaign to try to get released from his scholarship, while USC coach Lane Kiffin told the Los Angeles Times he expected Stanley to report to preseason camp once he has taken care of everything. That would be the second time in Stanleys career he was expected to report to a camp once his academics were in order.
Stanley, who was rated a four-star defensive end and linebacker prospect by Rivals.com, has played for four different high schools and colleges (Trinity Catholic High, Vanguard High, Bowling Green and Eastern Arizona Junior College). He has been committed to five different colleges at some point during his career (Bowling Green, USF, UCF, Tennessee and USC).
Stanley (6-2, 245) was supposed to enroll at UCF in January and many within the program believed he would come to the school despite limited contact with the UCF coaches in December. He was enthusiastic when he first committed to the Knights, raving about the opportunity to play close to his familys home in Ocala and to make an immediate impact. Stanleys transcripts didnt arrive in a timely fashion and neither did he. As a junior college commitment who opted not to enroll in January, he was free to explore other options. By waiting so long to sign on with a school, Stanley was in higher demand. He was the best player available to plug holes on a defensive line. He ended up committing to Tennessee and then later followed Kiffin to USC.
Stanley played linebacker, defensive end and tight end as a sophomore at Eastern Arizona Junion College in 2009. He recorded 59 tackles, 20 tackles for a loss, 11 sacks and a forced fumble. He was named to the Super Prep JUCO 100 and All-Western State League first team.
He told the Sentinel he is going to hire an attorney to help him get his release from USC and has had trouble reaching anyone at the school to discuss his scholarship release.
Stanley continues to say Florida State, USF and UCF are potential destinations, but he has not spoken with coaches at the schools and its unclear whether the Knights would accept Stanley after he backed out of his last commitment.
