Hyams on Alexis Johnson

I believe charges were reduced, not dropped. Also UT has a student code of conduct that all students must follow. It gives them the right to suspend any student for breaking it. They decided that he did break it. He is going to them to plead his case that either he didn't break it, it's not as bad as it looked, or he has changed and won't break it again.

Not sure what this has to do with the federal government but thank you for brining politics into this, I wasn't sick of seeing political stuff everywhere else.

I have worked at multiple places that had a code of conduct, and if I had been convicted or took a plea bargain, my ass would have been on the street.

I expect a redshirt year for him. He's gotten no work in at all.

We're trying to win a championship. Why would we redshirt a player who could potentially help us?

I'm sure he's been working out on his own like Von Pearson last year. Just cause you aren't officially with the team doesn't mean you can't work out and be ready.

I'm sure he was given a weight lifting and conditioning regiment to do on his own.

D4H, do you think he will be allowed to play this coming season though? I expect at least a 4 game suspension. Maybe the entire year. Can he take a redshirt if suspended the entire season?

Why on earth would he be suspended for a year?

He was basically told by the judge, don't get in trouble for 6 months and we'll act like this never happened.

I don't see why allegations the legal system won't punish you for should get you suspended.

Get the kid back on the field. He's here to play football. He's not being trained to be a model citizen.

I was talking more about what Butch might do & not the judicial system. I'm sure Butch is going to suspend him at least 4 games no matter what in my opinion. Butch it tough on his players when it comes to even getting into trouble.

You were doing fine till the very end. Then you blew it.

Edit: What are the official charges that CBJ should overlook?

Butch isn't stupid. He knows this is a big season. And Alexis can help us win games.

He's gonna be back on the field by September 24 if the student judiciary board clears him.

Opinions like this are what just blow my mind. Where to start:

I don't see why allegations the legal system won't punish you for should get you suspended.

He took a plea deal, i.e., he admitted to a lesser charge to reduce his sentence. Not like he was acquitted.

He's not being trained to be a model citizen.

Well, yes he is, he is here on a full ride to get an education and a positive, contributing individual to society.

Without getting to political, I never fail to be amazed at the hypocrisy of those on the left, and you of all people, the way you put the ultimate student athlete Dobbs on a pedestal, saying this.

You have to excuse D4H, he is a jumper.

That's a dangerous precedent to set. Gotta set rules and standards inside the program and not worry about the business of other programs. Butch has seemingly done a good job implementing and sticking to that very plan. Not to mention that Johnson's charges were domestic violence related and Tennessee can't afford to err on the side of too much leniency with issues involving violence against women, because of the Title IX stuff.

TAD,

This part of the post is excellent and shows that our program should operate with integrity and fairness. I was headed for the like button until ...

I read this part. That's where you went from a program of integrity to one about judging a young man's future and leading a team based on outside feelings and opinions.

For the sake of my fandom and sleeping well at night, I hope Butch is operating in the green and not purple.

I don't know why anyone should be throwing out random "he'll be suspended for at least 4 games" based on literally no facts to support this. By my count, he's been suspended from all team activities since February (5 months) and will be for at least another 10-20 days until the judicial board makes their decision. When AJ Johnson and Danny Obrien were arrested on alcohol charges and resisting arrest in Feb. 2014 , they didn't face any game suspension. Danny Obrien's SECOND slip up at the beginning of last season bought him a 2 game suspension and he was back.

We all sit back and think Butch is the most strict person in the world, and don't get me wrong he does a good job disciplining the players when they mess up. But he's also reasonable. I think that if he sees that a judge is going to reduce a charge to a misdemeanor and put him on a brief probation period, then Butch won't try to further the punishment in addition to Johnson being suspended from team activities for 6 months already.

Side bar: One could argue that the loss to Oklahoma last season was entirely due to the fact that we couldn't pressure Mayfield in the fourth quarter. We were without Obrien in that game because of his suspension and we also lost Maggitt in the second quarter of that game. Food for thought.

I get your enthusiasm and passion, but the players and player parents/families have got be laughing at that attitude.

This / what you're saying is contrary to the Butch Jones system. Also, so is the "this year or never, ever, never ever ever never, if not this year" is also out of line (at the least, only 11 seniors + 5 or so non-seniors will be leaving after this season, so those coming back next year + will also have new dreams).

Go VOLS !! Character, honesty, responsibility and treating your fellow students with respect -- being a model citizen of Knoxville and where'er thereafter -- is a good thing (winning football at all costs is not the way).

No. He was not given an academic scholarship. He was given an athletic scholarship.

He's here to play football. Getting an education for free is just a nice bonus. Cause I can tell you he won't be on scholarship anymore if he refused to play football.

He also won't be on scholarship anymore if he refuses to be a student.

Exactly. What had me shaking my head on this was Alexis Johnson had just got here. Had he even been here more than two weeks? The night this happened, he should have been finishing unpacking and introducing himself to women. No, this guy definitely does not waste time for this to happen this quickly.

Butch needs to think very carefully before he re-instates this guy. Another arrest would be a PR nightmare.

Amazing how people form these stories in their own heads. Alexis was play fighting with his girlfriend and it got out of hand. If he did a fraction of what he was accused of, he would have received more than a judicial diversion. Which by the way means he didn't plead guilty to anything. I also noticed someone mentioned the lawsuit. For one, it has been settled. So I doubt much could come of Alexis being reinstated since his girlfriend, who dropped the charges, received money from the lawsuit. To be honest, it's bogus that Alexis was involved in the lawsuit to begin with seeing as though the supposed reason behind the lawsuit was due to lax punishment of the players. He was suspended immediately and added to the lawsuit 2 days later. I think you set a bad precedent when you remove a kid's due process and assign guilt before all of the facts are in. Another reason the federal government should butt out state funded universities. These are legal matters that should be handled by the authorities not the schools.

From JJL Law Firm:
"Now, let’s say that you were charged with simple possession of marijuana. You are eligible for diversion. You would go to the court where you were charged, you would enter a guilty plea, and you would receive a probation period of 11 months, 29 days. You would go straight to probation, meaning no jail time, and at the end of that 11/29, you would return to the court, asking the judge for an order expunging your record."

So yes you would plead guilty to a charge. :hi:
