Hyams on Alexis Johnson

Amazing how people form these stories in their own heads. Alexis was play fighting with his girlfriend and it got out of hand. If he did a fraction of what he was accused of, he would have received more than a judicial diversion. Which by the way means he didn't plead guilty to anything. I also noticed someone mentioned the lawsuit. For one, it has been settled. So I doubt much could come of Alexis being reinstated since his girlfriend, who dropped the charges, received money from the lawsuit. To be honest, it's bogus that Alexis was involved in the lawsuit to begin with seeing as though the supposed reason behind the lawsuit was due to lax punishment of the players. He was suspended immediately and added to the lawsuit 2 days later. I think you set a bad precedent when you remove a kid's due process and assign guilt before all of the facts are in. Another reason the federal government should butt out state funded universities. These are legal matters that should be handled by the authorities not the schools.

Didn't the legal authorities put him on 6 month probation? Should one on/during probation be receiving all of the same benefits as those around him/her not on probation? Maybe his being reinstated only after probation will help other students think before they play fight. Maybe he'll be all-cleared and playing Aug 1.

Very well said and recounted.

This is just speculation, but even IF he gets an expedited hearing I don't think we can expect to hear an official decision till mid-late August. I don't know a ton about the system, but I do know the Student Judicial Board operates slow as hell just from my time at the university and having friends have to go to it.

With that being the case, he wouldn't be able to work with the team until close to the end of August which means he would be very far behind. He probably wouldn't play any meaningful snaps until much later in the season.

It seems almost smarter to just redshirt the kid and not blow a year of eligibility for couple games at the end of the year, especially if Tuttle is moving along well and gets in shape faster than expected.

Of course this is just my opinion, but it just seems like it wouldn't be smart unless they fully believe they can have him prepared to play by the start of October.

Even with Tuttle you only have four true DT's; one little injury and you are in deep crap; especially in the fourth quarter.

Did the legal authorities put him on 6 months probation immediately or was he offered his Constitutional right of due process? Maybe instead of finger wagging on a soapbox, a logical person could have more than one takeaway. For Alexis Johnson, control your surroundings and don't put yourself in bad situations. And for people who blow an event out of proportion only to recant a large portion of their claim, maybe we can assess a penalty here as well for false accusations. Again, there's a reason the charges went from serious felony charges to judicial diversion.

From JJL Law Firm:
"Now, let’s say that you were charged with simple possession of marijuana. You are eligible for diversion. You would go to the court where you were charged, you would enter a guilty plea, and you would receive a probation period of 11 months, 29 days. You would go straight to probation, meaning no jail time, and at the end of that 11/29, you would return to the court, asking the judge for an order expunging your record."

So yes you would plead guilty to a charge. :hi:

I stand corrected. :hi:

If we're going to Atlanta with a shot to make the playoffs, YOU PLAY HIM.

Screw saving a year of eligibility. This is a potential championship season. You play anyone and everyone that gives you the best chance to win.

He has/had an atty, and I'm assuming his atty is satisfied that const rights were respected, as I didn't realize that was an issue. But, I thought the 2nd of 2 charges (while reduced) is still on the table / will be dropped only after the 6 mo period -- so, how can a student athlete be legitimately allowed to participate while the charge is still on the books? Anyway, maybe I'm mistaken, or maybe if someone can get the judge to drop the reduced charge before the mutually-agreed upon 6 mo period is up.

Butcher is going to be used as a hybrid DE/DT type player. He has put on some weight in order to be able to do that. No, he's not played any yet at UT because of off the field issues but we have to remember he was a 4* recruit coming out of high school.

He can play DT if needed. We're loaded at DE so DT might be his best bet for playing time anyhow. Doing so, he would give us 5 DT's but we still can't afford any season ending injuries to that position.

I think you're right that he could see some time on the inside, seems like a speedy inside DT could be his calling. But to his credit, it's not because of his off the field incident (running around hammered drunk on the interstate :salute:) that he hasn't seen playing time. He had a knee injury that (according to the youtube video I watched about it) needed a very intricate procedure. He was going to redshirt regardless since he was undersized (6'2 240-245lb) and needed to develop size and strength..which he has done.

You're going to tell me that his off the field incident didn't have anything to do with him playing any in 2016 & taking a redshirt? He's a 4* star player & all intentions he was going to come in last season & get some snaps/playing time.

Yes, he had a knee injury too but the off the field incident factored into things as well. You know Butch better than that!

if he is not reinstated in August (like next week) then he is not going to be ready to help at all this year and coaches know that today. In mid August, school starts and practices go to 20 hour weeks. Johnson learning a system he has had no instructions on yet will be impossible when coaches have no time to spend with him... Its a pipe dream to expect him to help. I'm not convinced he could be helpful even if reinstated next week.

Preston Williams played week 1 after being cleared in late August and only practicing for 3 days.

If Alexis has great talent he'll play as soon as he's cleared.

Its all about the level of his talent and our need.

Gotta agree with you here. To reinforce your opinion, Preston Williams was fresh out of high school, and was also coming off of an ACL injury. Granted, PWill didn't have a major impact last season, but an impact nonetheless. I don't know how common knowledge this is, but Johnson was in JUCO for 2 years, so body size wise he's a junior, and will have had a nice gradual transition from high school ball to D1 level (having had 2 years in the "minors").

Any FB player who gets in trouble these days for doing anything with/to a woman is too stupid to play anyway. Before long, people will be suing for glancing their way!

That sounds ridiculous, not to mention misogynistic, hope something's lost in the translation there.

Problem is, there is no dorsal fin(s) that you can spot in some cases. With 18-22 year olds hyped up on hormones with groupies in the pool, the only insurance is keeping them in a bubble under close scrutiny. Additionally, it happens to more than just Joe Schmo in this climate. It is a matter of appeasing and appealing to the current climate that drives our society overall.

I am just hopeful that individuals with more wisdom than you or I will be making this call.

During yesterday's presser, CBJ said there is no update on Johnson.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 10. Charges will be dismissed if he stays out of trouble until then.
