I hate to rehash it but....

Probably so. Yeah, it was bad. And the Gruden rumors didn't help it. But honestly, like someone said above, Hart botched it up. When you get publicly turned down by several coaches, nobody is going to be happy with what you get, because they believe that everyone should want to be the coach at Tennessee.

If Butch Jones was target number one, the backlash would have been less. If Butch Jones was the coach at a major conference and not at Cincy, the backlash would have been less. If people didn't think he was going to bring his whole Cincy staff, the backlash would have been less. But it was what it was.

But, if any of us could have looked forward in time to what we've seen, and if anybody would have thought "this guy is going to get us more four star recruits by the O&W Game than we had all last season" or that he would land us Marquez North or Jalen Hurd, or that he would have brought on Terry Fair as GA, or any of the other incredible things he's done, then I don't think any of us would have complained.

This type of thing will happen every time that you make a coaching change IF the number one target is not attained. And normally, people have a differing opinion or lead about who should be number one. This time, people jumped on Gruden train, and there was enough rumors to gain some smoke, and then before you knew it, we were in full disappointment mode.

But point is.....it's over. When 100,000 show up for the O&W game, that will make a bigger statement about how we feel about the program in Butch's hands then the tweets after he was hired ever did.

Idk if Gruden was the number one or not. I think Gundy was then Strong. I think we dodged a major bullet with Strong.

So you've been here since 2008, and you have 2,303 posts....

And you mean to tell me that you've never gotten sucked in to at least the smallest internet rumor?

I mean, I was a big Grudenite. Big. I wanted it to happen. I thought there was a major conspiracy going on. It was fun. And when you're looking for something to happen, and you want it, you will twist anything to believe what seems like the best scenario for the team you love. And it doesn't help when false information is coming in from people who seem credible or have been in the past. And it doesn't help when people who are truly credible are being fed things that are false and reporting them.

You believe. You believe because you think that it's the best option. And when your team is as desperate for hope as Tennessee was, then you swing for the fences and hang on to any hope you have. It's called being human.

Did I want Jon Gruden? Yeah, I did. Did I think it would happen? Yeah, I did, because I listened to all of these people on here, and just hoped one of them knew what they were talking about.

But you know what? It didn't happen. I was wrong. But a lot of other people were too. And we all will admit it. But we won't apologize for saying that we thought that Tennessee was a good enough place that a Super Bowl winning coach would want to come here. And we won't apologize for wanting a great coach for our team. But yeah, we were wrong, and a lot of people were mislead.

BUT, at the end of the day, I am truly glad that Butch Jones is our coach, and I don't think there's a single "Grudenite" that would say otherwise. Has Butch won a Super Bowl? No. Has he coached in the NFL as a Head Coach? No.

But the reason so many of us wanted Gruden was because 1. He had a good track record. 2. He would be a good recruiter, or at least have a recognizable name. 3. He would respect and emphasize Tennessee tradition. 4. He would work his butt off to get us to the top.

And you know what? Every single "Grudenite" would admit that Butch Jones has an incredible track record, probably better than any other option we had, he has brought in an amazing recruiting class already, and is getting elite talent to Knoxville, he has emphasized and respected and even added to our Tennessee traditions ("he gets it"). And he has worked his butt off day and night, repairing bridges burned by the previous staff, and getting our team where it needs to be.

So yeah, we bought in, whoop de-do. That was 4 months ago. Yeah, we questioned Butch's hire. That was 4 months ago. Yeah, we wanted Gruden. That was 4 months ago.

But 4 months later, we still got what we wanted. We got a coach who loves UT, who works his tail off, who recruits well, and who knows how to win.

So take your gloating somewhere else. At the end of the day, Fulmerites, Butch Boys, Grudenites, Dooley Fans (all 2 of them), and even the Kiff Sniffers, we all have one thing in common:

We want to see our Vols win. And though we might disagree on how it should be done, it just reminds me that we still have the most passionate fanbase in college football.

And no matter who our coach is, or what our record is, I'm PROUD to be a part of it.

IDK either but I would be willing to bet a shiny new silver dollar that he was only the number one target in the minds of many people here on VN.

The Randy Shannon thing had me hook, line and sinker.

After that, I was very skeptical about Gruden. I made a few posts in the Gru threads but never bashed nor was bashed. I never bought in but in the back of my mind there was hope. And yes, I did pay closer attention to MNF for clues. :)

Me too. I mean not that I wanted him but I listened to the so-called insiders and believed it was a done deal. I never believed that Gruden was coming here. I also made a post or two in the Gru threads and said I didn`t think he would ever come here and I got bashed many times for posting my thoughts. A lot of Grudenites didn`t want to hear anything other than that he was coming here.

Sounds like some are still butt hurt.

Yup sure does.

Honestly, I don't blame anyone for getting caught up in the early hype. I even had a sliver of hope that the rumors were true. It was the aftermath that was so ridiculous.

I remember having a back and forth with at least 2 people about the call Manning made to CBJ. When I saw the article on goVolsxtra I had to laugh.

Reaction to the thread was beyond predictable. Thanks for participating.

Are they? They r no different than the sheep that want to behead anyone that doesn't believe cbj gets it... or crazy fans following recruits on Twitter n loving them or hating them..

Moral of story its always been like this its just now we have the me world to vent...

Any coach that was hired was going to have haters.. I say hart n cheek made decisions based on ego n not what's best for tn.

Saying that cbj has a great recruiting class YTD but bottom line he has to beat Fla n bama n if that doesn't happen he will be fired at some point.

I was a believer. I bought in hook, line, and sinker. I was angry at the time but it was more at myself for being gullible. I look back at it now for what it was, an enjoyable little distraction from a miserable season. Like Sam said, the Night Shift was great. Many nights spent lmao thanks to the guys I met there.

We got what we need a coach that loves Tennessee, not just because of the money I really believe coach Jones when he said Tennessee was his dream job, a true vol is tough not hollywood coach Jones is Tennessee i feel he will be here for a long run and if he is that means we are winning, right now i would not trade coach Jones for Gruden, i dont even understand why people bring up Gruden he is all about the money, not the love for Tennessee.

I think this is aimed more at the false insiders (yay4bray comes to mind) than the people who got sucked into believing the rumor machine.

In defense of anyone who never claimed inside information regarding Gruden but believed the rumors to be true, it didn't help that a VN Mod essentially guaranteed it and then never wavered on it until towards the end. Throw in the stories and tweets from legit media about Gruden talking to possible assistants and Tennessee being the only job he'd take, and it was not difficult for someone who had given up on Dooley and the 2012 season to get sucked in. It's not like all of the smoke was limited to the posters here. The only time I was at 100% in believing was after the Mod's post, and I stayed at 100% for just a few minutes, because it was clear that VN was the only place calling it.

I was ticked off at the time of the Jones hire because of how the search went. And, I blame Dave Hart for us having to endure getting blown out by Vandy. If it's true that Hart told Dooley he was gone but wanted to keep that confidential until after the season and that Hart thought Dooley was our best chance at winning the last two games to qualify for a bowl, then that is asinine thinking. What incentive is Dooley going to have to make a bowl when he's already fired? It was clear Dooley had lost his team that day.

Even if Hart didn't tell Dooley he was not returning until after the Vandy game, that still doesn't excuse Hart. If it's true that we were never anywhere close to hiring Gruden, LOL, then it was absolutely ridiculous to wait so long on Dooley. An announcement that he's not returning should have at least been made after the Missouri game.

And, if Butch Jones ends up being a superstar here, then Hart was very lucky, IMO. He didn't use a search firm, and he struck out on every reported target. In fairness, it was reported that Strong changed his mind after saying he was coming.

Basically, I feel like Hart mucked the entire process, and then Jones fell into his lap. I hope Jones works out very well, and Hart comes out smelling like a rose, because that's what's best for the program.

hahah,,groodenites still being apologetic. Some of us tried to stomp that crap in the first few threads but were lambasted by the "originals". I'm certainly glad that most of them are Vol fans and hopefully they learned a lesson.

I was a "Grudenite" and I was taken in and believed that He was coming.... the things I read had me convienced as I could be.... I am not sure what the "REAL" truth is/was even to this day....so many reports from different places.

Even the "ever popular" Hymns who one day said Gruden was not in the picture at all and the very next day said Gruden canceled a meeting with Hart at the airport... (either one or the other of those reports was wrong) which I don't know.

What I do know is CBJ is OUR coach and Gruden is NOT....so I am trying to accept CBJ and hope he wins several NC at TENNEESSEE ...my school

The reason I wanted gruden is simple...I WANT TO WIN, I make NO appology for that, I did not at the time and I still don't.

Who said what, who was right, who was wrong...I don't Know and I DON'T CARE, All I care about is WINNING GO VOLS

More to the people that made up conspiracy theories based on nothing that was reality based after the fact. Like for instance, Peyton Manning was trying to lure CBJ to CO while boosters shored up a Gruden deal. When confronted with the simplest answer they were adamant in their theory.

I don't begrudge anyone who bought in but were disappointed as long as they were still somewhat grounded in reality when it was all said and done.

What lesson would you hope they learned? To not want the best possible coach for UT? Clearly Gruden was a big reach, and probably never had any chance of happening, but if it had, it would have been a slam dunk hire that would have instantly gotten UT headed in the right direction.

I like the comment above stating that the one thing that we all have in common - Grundenites, Fulmerites, Doolaid Drinkers, etc. - is that we just want our Tennessee Volunteers to win. That's all that matters. Go Vols!

Back when CBJ was hired and all the Grudenites were butt hurt, some were still clinging to the belief that Gruden was still in play had Hart not gone rogue and hired CBJ behind the boosters back. There was a couple of people on here who vehemently claimed that the infamous call Manning made to CBJ trying to recruit him to CO was to keep Hart from hiring him before the boosters could finish a deal with Gruden.

At the time I suggested that the simplest answer is probably the most likely one. That Manning lives in CO now and was asked by someone if he could put in a good word. Nothing more to it than that as TN hadn't even contacted CBJ when he made the call.

But noooooo, those few on here (and it was just a few) stood behind their illuminati conspiracy theory.

Well I'm here to gloat. I'm not even sure if those few posters are still around. Any way, here it is, the simplest explanation....

Peyton Manning on Butch Jones: 'He has it all mapped out' » govolsxtra.com Mobile

So if you were one of those conspiracy theorist please step forward and call Peyton Manning a liar.

Nice avatar.
