I Miss BP

Loved BP & what he started with UT basketball. The excitement factor BP generated isn't quite there with CCM.....yet. However, I think CCM will be better long term for the program's stability & health. He will make a deep run in the tourney in a year or two with these kids he is signing and the excitement will be back.

BP turned the entire program around I definitely miss him. It's too early to make a fair judgement in CCM at this point, lets see how the season goes.

I think Kenny Hall is coming around, CCM has made it a point to mention his positive change of attitude

I'll believe it when I see it. He's had one great game so far and completely disappeared in the others. A senior should have some amount of consistency.

Just throwing it out there. Nothing against CCM; by all accounts he is a good man and a good coach and will do good things here. And Pearl made several mistakes and had to go.

But man, I miss seeing that fire and energy he had on the sideline.

Hey man------careful, you might be labeled a racist.
BTW--------count me in. Excitement and energy can never be overestimated. It's what we call IT. Bruce had IT. Some were jealous that he had IT----as they usually are.

If you are like me and miss high octane basketball catch VCU on NBCSN tonight at 7:00 as they take on Duke. I watched them beat up Memphis yesterday and it was vintage early Pearl. Pressure D all over the court, jacking up 3s, bodies flying, and plenty of floor burns.

I can see why people would miss Bruce Pearl. He was amazing at firing up the crowd and had a ton of passion. He's going to coach again somewhere and turn their program around. Too bad things happened the way they did.

The lofton,,smith, Bradshaw,,chism, days will always be remembered as a blast. I went to more games, home and away, and saw us more on prime time tv than I thought I would. Coming to UT in '88 as a huge fan of the game, I was pretty disgusted with UT hoops for a long, long time. The Memphis and tx games stand out. I was at both. Those were the days. Hopefully we can get a couple more ballhandlers and shooters, and get back to w's and a fun team to watch.

What the hey did Shaka Smart do to get passed over by so many programs? This guy can obvioulsy coach. UT never even showed any interest, and it was right after the VCU tourney run.

Yes they did. Plenty of programs showed interest. From my understanding, Shaka thinks he's worth more than he really is, and is content winning at VCU until someone rolls in the neighborhood of $3 mil his way.

Not true.

Many people, including UT inquired...he wants to stay there and they gave him a nice raise to show their commitment to them.

Liked Bruce but will take Coach Martin any day over BP!

haha how can you say that? 6 Straight NCAA Tournaments appearances, he took what buzz could not do anything with and made them a 2 seed. I support CCM and hope he does great and succeeds but for anyone to say CCM is a better coach from what we have seen so far is crazy.

so you guys are saying after 1 year you would take a guy that took us to the NIT over the guy that took us to the elite 8?! The pearl years were fun and i will never forget what we were then. Recruiting with the basketball powers, playing on ESPN (not SEC network) and on top of that we were just fun to watch. Pressing, playing fast, athletic basketball. I think CCM is a good coach but to say he is better than pearl at this point is dumb

You have no idea what you're talking about 95% of the time.

What do you guys miss most about BP? The lying or the rule breaking again after a tear filled press conference about how sorry he was?

Not sure he BP broke another rule after his pc. Didn't the NCAA clear him on that as an incidental bump? You might want to look it up.

One problem with Pearl is not what he accomplished, which was considerable, but where the program was headed. The man could not evaluate HS talent.

Pearl's players are the one's starting and getting the lions share of the minutes on this team.

Pearl was good but Elite 8 was his max coaching potential. Im curious to see what Cuanzo potential might be.

I like Cuonzo and nobody take this as me advocating for Pearl, but that statement is absurd. How do you know that an elite 8 where we are a Scotty Hopson blunder away from the final 4 was Bruce Pearl's potential?

I agree that he wasn't that great of a talent evaluator at the HS level.

Childress - brought with him from UWM, had a good sophomore year and then disappeared from the face of the earth
Chism - great player
Crews - dismissed after sophomore year
Johnson - terrible player who ended up coming off the bench at Georgia State
R. Smith - dismissed after sophomore year; huge academic and character risk
Tabb - limited role player
Tatum - contributor but wildly inconsistent
Williams - never reached his potential
Hopson - great player although inconsistent
Jurick - terrible player
West - where is he now?
Woolridge -awful player and an even worse rapper
Hall - average at best
Golden - good player despite the rough start
Harris - great player
McRae - solid player

I know every coach has misses, but that's what, 5 or 6 good players in six recruiting classes? It's amazing how many of Pearl's best players were JUCOs or transfers (T. Smith, Prince, Maze, Goins, Maymon). I loved Pearl but let's not pretend he was anything more than a decent OTF coach and an elite salesman.
