I Miss BP

And golden and McRae were looking like busts as well under Pearl, until Martin came along.

I think he really struggled to develop players.

I agree that he wasn't that great of a talent evaluator at the HS level.

Childress - brought with him from UWM, had a good sophomore year and then disappeared from the face of the earth
Chism - great player
Crews - dismissed after sophomore year
Johnson - terrible player who ended up coming off the bench at Georgia State
R. Smith - dismissed after sophomore year; huge academic and character risk
Tabb - limited role player
Tatum - contributor but wildly inconsistent
Williams - never reached his potential
Hopson - great player although inconsistent
Jurick - terrible player
West - where is he now?
Woolridge -awful player and an even worse rapper
Hall - average at best
Golden - good player despite the rough start
Harris - great player
McRae - solid player

I know every coach has misses, but that's what, 5 or 6 good players in six recruiting classes? It's amazing how many of Pearl's best players were JUCOs or transfers (T. Smith, Prince, Maze, Goins, Maymon). I loved Pearl but let's not pretend he was anything more than a decent OTF coach and an elite salesman.

So if he was a bust of a recruiter and still won, wouldn't that mean he was a pretty good OTF coach?

I've never understood why anyone would want to short change BP's impact on UT basketball. All you have to do is compare the pre-Pearl era with the Pearl era. Can CM meet or exceed Pearl? We won't know for several years. I hope he does and we can all look back at the foundation Pearl left here at UT.

I didn't say he was a bust. He landed several good HS players but supplemented them with players like Prince and Smith. It gave him success but it's not a sustainable model. After the E8 run I believed he was changing for the better in terms of actual coaching, but thanks to the NCAA mess we'll never really know.

I think people just want to move on with a new coach. Threads like this don't help, especially when CCM has us playing well.

They were freshman/ bench players who got new roles under Martin than they had under pearl....if pearl doesn't get credit for them than he definitely.deserves all the credit developing players such as jajuan smith and bradshaw.

I've never said otherwise.

Can throw Maymon into that list as well as players pearl couldn't get anything from but Martin has.

I think most people are fully able to see the good things that Pearl did for UT and still hope that Martin proves to be a big time coach. I really don't see how criticising BP in any way helps Martin build a program

I totally disagree with that.....maymon looked like.he was going to be a stud.....he was just way out of control and needed to learn to play within the game.

The player that surprised me the most of the three was golden, he has performed above where I thought he would be, maymon became the player I thought he would.be while mcrae has underperformed from where I thought he would be at this point but he is still slowly improving.

I think a lot of people on these boards are too emotionally fragile.....there is no reason we can't like.both coaches and even discuss and compare both coaches.

It sort of reminds me how sensitive people are with the football versus basketball arguments....I'm secure enough to love all ut sports LOL

Said nobody after 2010-2011.

I did and he was my most frustrating player we had that season......he was one of the main reasons I thought we would be a borderline ncaa tournament team going into last season.

you sure you were watching Maymon and not Tobias?

Yes......he was a good rebounder was beating his man almost every time to the basket but he played out.of.control......took ill advised shots.....got his shot block and would.go out of control causing.very damaging turnovers. Once he learned to control himself.....where to get shots from he was going to be a very good player.

I won't.credit pearl too much on smith either bc his.freshman yr even though he didn't have the stats to back it up.....he really looked like he could be a player.

The same could be said for lofton then.

Lofton definitely looked good as a freshman.....he improved a lot in some areas but how much is that on the coach and how much is on the individual player working on his skills.

Pearl was awesome at using what players he had and putting them in position to be as successful as they possibly could be....Martin seems to be doing a great job but has a lot of unanswered questions about how far he can lead us....the future does appear.bright though

Can we please focus on Oakland? And can we PLEASE destroy this team? 2 years in a row they've been a thorn in our side.
