If Barnes retires when ZZ is done ......

Barnes will probably get a say in who we hire. Hopefully White takes it into consideration but doesn’t simply hire because Barnes said so. Need to go out and find the best available guy if he decides to hang it up after this season. Which I imagine is likely
Barnes has done a lot but he's not a Roy Williams, Coach K, Jay Wright, Jim Boheim that can chose his successor.

@Chaz-Vol , ya need to refresh and reread. No one claimed Barnes should be the sole arbiter.

Were you hoping no one was paying attention? Again?

He isn’t leaving Auburn and the UT board would never approve bringing back a coach who was fired for cause here even if he wanted to come back.
Say who these board members are and we’ll go get news ones. A guy messes up, pays his dues, recovers and excels and our board won’t hire him?? If Bruce would even consider it and if the school could afford him, we’d be lucky to have him.

Hey if KC can make the jump and sign a top 5 class her first year, then I’d give this guy a chance.

He wins.
Valid point. I love the defensive play that CRB demands of his players but his offensive style is less than desired. We are close to last in D1 schools in terms of speed of play. I don’t think many top end players like that style now. JMO

KC has a fast, run and gun, three point shooting team. I think a lot of her players like that style.

I’m going to say something outrageous. I think we really need to go get Pearl back. I know there are a lot of folks split on that but you can’t deny how good he is.
He’d take it IF Tennessee agrees to hire Steven F Pearl as his replacement in a couple years. You want that? Otherwise he’ll stay at Auburn.

Seriously, Vol fans need to move on from Pearl. It will NEVER happen.

Danny White is never going to hire a Medicare eligible coach. The oldest HC he’s ever hired as an AD was Johnny Dawkins at UCF who was 52 at the time.

Pearl is 64.

We should go get Chris Beard, Ole Miss's coach and make him turn us down. If he won't come, then other good options would be (in order of preference):

1. Mark Byington from Vandy
2. T.J. Otzelberger from Iowa State
3. Chris Jans from Miss. State
4. Patrick Kelsey from Louisville
6. Mike White from Georgia

We can outbid any of those schools. We have better facilities and a better chance of success and a higher ceiling as a program than any of them as well.

Thoughts?
Why not go after Nate Oats at Alabama? He stays in the SEC and the move is a lateral. He and DW have a past relationship since DW hired him at Buffalo. Just offer him more money.

Also, I definitely think RB will retire after this season. He is 70 years old and has a Net Worth of about $16M.

Bruce Pearl will never under any circumstance be the head coach at Tennessee again. Never. Folks need to move on from the Bruce infatuation. Besides, he’s getting up in years himself. Who is to say he may not hang it up in a year or two?

Realistically, I see DW’s wish list as follows:
1. Shaka Smart
2. Greg McDermott
3. Grant McCasland
4. Pat Kelsey

If all four say no, then we delve into the mid major ranks.

Huh? All I was saying is I don't think Barnes will get a ton of say so and hasn't reached the level of other ex coaches who chose their successors. You're welcome to disagree. Not sure "what hoping no one was paying attention? Again?" Means

I doubt Barnes gets much say so. Consulted? Sure. Absolutely.

You implied, imho, that Barnes shouldn’t be allowed to name his replacement. A point with which I agree.

My issue was your providing examples of coaches that did name their replacements as if someone had made that suggestion. No one suggested he be allowed to name his replacement.

You're probably right. The "what if" I wonder is what if Pearl hadn't been fired and stayed but that EE was his ceiling. If after 5-6 years we never got to the EE again and especially if we didn't get of out of the first weekend, would people be calling for Pearl's head? I think so.
The truth is maybe somewhere in between. The FF would satisfy some, but as you said, for the folks who are just infatuated with Pearl, the character, the target would just move to the next differentiating accomplishment.

I'll bet you were a huge Kiffin fan, right?
Sell your soul for that one win. Pearl is a cheater and a liar. He wasn't even sorry for what he did to our program.

I would rather have class on our sidelines and a bunch of elite eight appearances than some POS like Cal. You remember his 1 ring, but failed to mention all the first weekend losses. He had 5 NBA players and got beat in the first weekend.
So Cal is classless? Barnes openly calls him a good friend.

In 1997, while coaching the New Jersey Nets, Calipari directed profanities at Star-Ledger sports reporter Dan Garcia and referred to him as a "Mexican idiot"
He got sued for 5mil.

He said that Camby, who had problems with academics, had turned it all around and made the “Athletic Director’s Academic Dean’s List.” this is completely made up and doesn't even exist.

Gets UMass on a NCAA violation and bolts before it is enforced. Knew the probation was coming and wins forfeited.

The Derek Rose issue at Memphis. Got him accepted into Memphis knowing someone else took his ACT.

The statement about all coaches knowing what goes on around their campus, but trying to deny knowing about Camby and Rose and all the other issues.

Plus he acts like a goon on the sideline.
So yeah, he is kinda classless.

Oates is the best I've seen mentioned in this thread so far...would he leave Bama though?

As others have stated though, I could see Dany White looking at a mid-major guy that has made the tourney consistently, is liked by the players, and has a fire about them - see the Lady Vols hire for the blueprint.

How come when we lose any game and I mean any game, people always talking about Barnes retiring

Lol it's stupid
Agree, Barnes is not going to retire anytime soon. He’s 17-4, we’ve hit a difficult stretch, we will work our way out of it. We will be ready for Florida and get the win. Go Vols! In Barnes we trust…………….

Idk if you're paying close attention but this thing could very easily be coming off the rails if we can't find a jump shot. We don't have slashers that attack the rim and we don't have a post player that can get his own shot. We have zero transition game (RB staple). That leaves shooting. And it looks like we don't have any of those either. Teams have figured out sell out to guard Chaz and let everyone else shoot. No one can make them pay except for Igor against UK and forgive me for not believing he can do that consistently due to what he has shown.

We have lost 3 of our last 4 and could very easily lose 2 of our next 3. And we are staring at probably the biggest roster overhaul of the RB era next year.....I'm not saying the sky is falling but, we could be at a crossroads

It’s the wrong timing for the retirement thread and it’s Barnes’ call when he wants to make it, not ours. I can say we better relish the time we have because many close to him feel like he won’t be here much longer. I hope they approve the additional year rule. It seems likely. I can see him staying another year with ZZ, and then cashing in his chips. I can also see him leaving after this year. I’d say it’s highly unlikely he’s here for more than another season or two at the outer limit. We absolutely will not hire Pearl or Beard, or any coach with baggage. I do not see us hiring another SEC coach, nor do we have the firepower to bring in a “proven” major coach. Sorry. DW has a great track record of finding undervalued talent. I’m sure that’ll be the road. He is close with Smart, and that’s definitely the right type of target if we want someone who has grown into a mature presence. He’s still young, and outside the Texas debacle he’s a 74% winning coach. Right now, I hope this team can itself again and pick up some more hard wins. With the right matchups, I still think we can make a run.
