If we go 4 - 8 do we fire Butch? (merged)

Hi Volnation,

Some confessions. I started this thread because I was hoping to create controversy / generate some fiery discussion in the off-season. If I'm honest, it's been a little slow, and I wanted to speed things up a bit. I guess that means I was trolling because I was trying to get a reaction. I thought it was far enough out from the start of the season to be that provocative. But, it seems people have taken this very seriously. Including Fade.

More confessions. I would have never fired Fulmer. I would NEVER have let Hambone make that decision, and I would NEVER have thought about hiring Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley. Those two brought some dark days to the Hill.

Butch is pretty much killing it right now. I don't know what that will mean come September, but he is outkicking his coverage right now. Long may he reign. Just win, baby.

Fulmer needed to be fired. If we had picked the right coach instead of Kiffin, we wouldn't be where we are today. I blame everything on Mike Hamilton for bumbling that hire.

Tennessee has never lost 8 games in a season. Some think this is not outside the realm of possibility in Coach Butch Jones's first year at the helm.

Do we fire Butch if he loses 8?

My personal feelings are he would have to be eating Dooley Wacky Bambacky to lose 8.

If we do lose 8 next year though, I think it is grounds to fire Hart (might as well include Cheek while we're at it), and the next's guys first job is to line up the next guy. CBJ have to win something special in Y2 to carry-on.

We let Dooley carry-on after the KY loss, and I think we all agree it was a huge, huge mistake.

.......smack yourself :bash:

Final confession:

Actually, the part about firing Hart and Cheek -- I'm totally down with that. I think Hart is the proverbial blind squirrel, and Cheek has seriously done ZERO with his flagship enterprise. Not to mention his antagonism of the AD.

Yea 152-52.......he sure needed to be fired!

Last 4 years

29-21

2 losing seasons

Recruiting classes in the 30s

We're never going to agree, so it's pointless to argue about it

I always find it funny how the Anti Fulmer people always twist stats to their favor, and the pro Fulmer's use facts in their arguement.

Butch should only be fired if we have a bad loosing record and the currently great recruiting class falls apart because of losing.
If Butch manages to land a strong top 10 class (or even better finish in top 5) he will more than deserve another few years to see how his recruits work out (same as was awarded to Dooley who deserved the chance to see how recruits from his first class like Hunter and D Rogers turned out).

Then that makes you incredibly foolish. Kiffin chose not to be the answer and Dooley wasn't the answer... but neither was the problem. ALL of the bad that has happened to the program over the last 4 years is a DIRECT result of Fulmer's failure and selfishness. HE alone is responsible for decimating the roster and especially the OL and DL. Discipline was an absolute wreck under Fulmer both on and off the field... remember the "Fulmer Cup"?

The only thing more of Fulmer would have brought was a much deeper hole to dig out of.

He came to believe that HE was bigger than the Vols...

Why somebody gotta go post something so idiotic that I have to respond before I take the initiative to change my retarded username?

Do a little research. Then ask yourself: should Cinci have fired Lyle Allen Jr. after posting a 4-8 record in his first season? If they did, they wouldn't have gone 10-3 the next season for the conference title.

Butch currnetly has the 2nd rated recruting class behind TAM, Hurd is a damn 5* no matter what Rivals now says, and we have have the potential to sign 30 for 2014.

Look at what Butch did as a WR coach at WVU, and the offensive production throughout his coaching career. He also had enough damn sense to immediately switch back to a 4-3 scheme for next year. Read any projections on Mt. McCullers for next year?

I haven't read past the OP's first post, so this has probably been said, but why in the hell would anyone start a post asking such a BS question? Eddie is going to be pi$$ed if finds out his name is being used to propogate such idiocy.

Yes he did. The game had long passed him by. He was no longer effectively recruiting or coaching.

His good years were in the past. It was only going to get worse with him at the helm. Worst part is that recruits all knew it.

I'm not anti-Fulmer one bit. I loved him, but it was time for him to go.

I even cried at his press conference. It was like I was going through a divorce, but knew it was best for both parties

So you think it would've been worse to keep Fulmer than go through the whole Kiffin/Dooley charade?

He coached 16 years not 4, anyone can hand pick stats that serve their argument.

It isn't hand picking stats to see the direction the program was headed under Fulmer. He got a fair chance to turn it around and failed. The rosters that were so pathetic for Dooley's first two years were the result of Fulmer's poor recruiting. If Fulmer or anyone else had been coach.... those rosters still would have stank and so would the records. That would have made no better than 4 bad seasons in Fulmer's last 6 by the beginning of last season.

I think it would have been no better... that's for certain. Recruiting and retention would have been worse as evidenced by what it was under Fulmer for his last several years.

But you seem to fall into a fallacy of limited alternatives.

It was time for Fulmer to go. There were always going to be risks making a new hire but that does not change the simple fact that it had become worth it to the future of the program to take those risks. No matter who was hired, there was going to be some "bleeding" for a couple of years due to Fulmer's failed 07 and 08 recruiting classes plus the weak class he left Kiffin in 09.

The right answer was to fire Fulmer. But the second part of the right answer was NOT to hire Kiffin or Dooley.

Hopefully, Jones completes the process of taking the program from a coach that had become complacent, entitled, and ineffective and handing it to one with the skill and drive to achieve championships.
