These coaching search threads are making me convinced we are a mediocre program, b/c these lists are flat out mediocre.

I don't know if they're really mediocre or just normal. Outside of Saban and maybe Spurrier, I can't think of a big splash hire in the SEC. Richt, Miles, Franklin, Muschamp, Mullen and even Urban Meyer when he got the Florida job were all pretty run of the mill, up and comer hires when they happened.

For everyone that is actually being real about this situation and understands that Jon Gruden will not be the next coach at Tennesse, let's have honest conversations about the potential next coach and some realistic ideas. No post about luring Bob Stoops, Nick Saban or Bill Cowher. Hopefully, I'm not the only one on this board that's list doesn't include

Gruden, Cowher, Saban, Muschamp, etc...

Let's wake up and talk about some real candidates (these are in no paticular order)

1) Charlie Strong - Turned L'Ville right back around, strong ties in FLA with recruiting
2) Jimbo Fisher - say what you want he can recruit and has FSU back in the Top 15
3) Al Golden - Don't want him, has never done anything in my book
4) Gary Patterson - Set in his ways, kind of a mystery hire
5) Larry Fedora - He wins, love him or hate him
6) Greg Roman - Would be a huge get, knows the game
7) Jim Tressel - Seriously doubt it with the NCAA hanging over his head and ours
8) Shaw - Would be a big hire. Wins and has never gotten blown out
9) Chavis - Kinda late name, obviously Les Miles thinks he should be our coach

Because ot the OP request I can't say who I think it will be, so you will just need to guess :)

Fedora, Butch Jones, Golden. In that order.

I don't see bad actors like Petrino or Butch Davis getting the nod.

Roman gets some love here, but I'm not yet seeing the appeal. Strong kind of underwhelms me. Stoops ain't coming, and I don't think Fisher is either.

If you think Gruden wasnt realistic then you have never been more wrong. He just wants too much power and to answer to nobody. If he would change that then he would/will be our next coach. Use your head man you dont move 18 mill to hire Al Golden. But in saying that Gruden's ego is why he probably wont be here so from your list I like Strong, Fisher, Patterson and Roman. I would be happy with any of those 4. Al Golden will never happen if Hart values his job, Tressel is no chance in hell with his history and us being on probation. I guess Fedora would be ok but his teams defenses blow. We need a defensive minded guy so that puts Strong, Patterson and Fisher at the top. Roman would be a good hire, but not being a HC rules out his chances. Strong and Fisher have coached in the SEC and have recruited in the SEC so they know what has to be done to be successful. I think Patterson would do well here, only thing that scares me is his recruiting. So im going Strong as my top guy behind Gruden and has been the whole time except for Stoops being in there too. Stoops could very well happen. So anybody saying there is no chance is wrong. Things have gotten stale and a move to a big time SEC school could be just what the Dr ordered. But who knows if Hart goes that route. But until I hear 100% no Gruden I am holding out a very small amount of hope. Go Vols and please get this damn search over with.

I think the next call has to be to Charlie Strong.

His defenses at Florida were fantastic. They have been good at Louisville with the limited talent you can get there. He has recruiting ties in Florida which is something Tennessee needs to win and has done okay recruiting to Louisville but it is hard to take kids out of UF, FSU, Miami, the SEC, the ACC to Louisville. If he were recruiting to Tennessee the quality of player he can get jumps substantially.

Out of that list I only would like to see Roman or Shaw at UT. Shaw seems a much longer shot so Roman is my number one pick.

I honestly am past caring at this point. If it's not Gruden, no one is going to excite me. We'll just get the same dog and pony show we've had with Kiffin and Dooley at the pressers:

- Put a fence around the state (recruiting)
- Strong assistant staff
- Best facilities in the country
- blah, blah, blah

Next year will be a disaster regardless...Oregon, Alabama, and Florida all on the road? Four of the current Top Five in the country (if you add Georgia at home)? Probable new QB? No chance. We'll be lucky if we finish with the same record as this year. We are much further away than most people think.

What's everyone's thought on smart? Not a big fan just because he's not "proven" and we need a winner.

MY Top 5 realistic for today(yes it is always changing).

#1 Petrino- offer nothing over 2.5 million.

#2 Fedora- offer 2.5

#3 Davis- offer 3

#4 Strong- offer nothing over 2.75

#5 Golden- offer 2.5

This is my top 5 and would proceed as such ONLY if Hart has got a NO from both Patterson and Petersen.
