What's everyone's thought on smart? Not a big fan just because he's not "proven" and we need a winner.

I just don't think you can take a chance on a coordinator this time. This needs to be a sure winner.

Now last time when Kiffin left use in a lurch, that would have been a great time to take a chance on an unproven coordinator, and it may have been a homerun. Note Dooley was never a OC or DC. I thought that was a bad sign (like Munchak).

I think we are already there my friend. This is going to be a underwhelming hire IMO.

The Gruden idea set everyone up for a let down if it did not happen. I try to think back to the UGA, USCe, and Mizzou games and realize we were not that far away. A capable coach could have had us 3-4 more wins and in a great bowl game. Dooley was just a loser and there is no other way to put it. All he has ever done was lose. At least the guys we are looking at(even if 3rd tier), have proven they can win at some level.

you can take Tressel off there, the show cause , Strong will be hard to pull away from where he is at,probably be hard to pull Roman to,i can't see Patterson leaving,i don't know much about Golden, the more i read the more i think no,which comes to Jimbo Fisher, friends with Hart,he could very well be the next head coach here

Not claiming to have sources, just passing along from a poster in another thread...he stated that Roman's wife is from East Tn ( Morristown area maybe) and he was apparently told Roman really wanted the UT job. If there's any truth to this, it would be worth exploring... imho

it's hard to say what they could do,a good coach, should be a good coach, where ever they go

the problem is.it is a huge step into the SEC,the coaches are put under maximum pressure to win and recruit at a level, there not use to,some can handle it a lot can't,it will be interesting to see who will be the next coach at UT if all the big names fall thru

Gruden is as real as the other options. It's hilarious to me when people like you think you know for certain that Gruden isn't coming here and act like those of us who think there is a chance are just stupid. Good stuff.

Yea, the poster said he spoke with Roman's inlaws at a high school game. But, this is as far as my "insider info" goes...thus the reason I don't get to start threads...but just lay in the weeds and poke dogs with a stick. LOL.

Got to love the "all these candidates suck" posts that offer no new names. Really incredible contributions by those guys.

Seriously want to know who those people suggest as an alternative.

I mean, Saban lost to Texas A&M with a Freshman QB. Not good enough for UT IMO.

Never mind that neither Miles, nor Saban had won more than 9 games in a season before being hired at LSU.

Kevin Sumlin - coached at Houston and never beat an SEC school....why in the heck did they hire him? Oh that's right to win at Alabama and have a Heisman QB his freshman year. The people acting like the SEC experience is the only way to get a good coach needs to come off their high horse.

I dont see Fedora coming either. He has a pretty solid gig at UNC, they have gotten MUCH better (granted ALOT of that was Butch Davis, but he's done well with it)....also, this could be my Lifelong Tar Heel fandom biased side kicking in as well lol. Still, I legitimately do not think he would leave UNC to come here this soon.

+1

The same ones saying Sumlin's offense would not work in the SEC and he was a stupid coach to hire are the ones saying coaches like Golden, Fedora, or Whittingham could not coach at Tennessee now. If you can take a team that won 3 games in 3 years and turn around and win 23 games in 4 years, your doing something. "Let's just throw 8 million a year at Gruden". Funny thing is you give Gruden this current UT team and Fedora this current UT team and noone can say without a doubt Gruden beats him. I'll put the 5+ million in my pocket and hire Fedora. JMO

+1 to both of these. Just because the SEC is the most dominant conference in the country, does NOT mean we currently have the BEST coaches for our situations.

Every coach Tennessee must hire has to meet the following criteria

Multiple NCAA Championships
Have beaten Florida, UGA & Bama at least 4x Each
Been an SEC Coach for 10+ Years and goes to a BCS Bowl every other season
Will have the #1 recruiting class every year

Wait for it - Althought Jon Gruden has completed none of the above task, he is the PERFECT FIT!

Yet - any other coach who isn't Jon Gruden - Doesn't have enough SEC experience :good!:

Urban Meyer was 17-6 at Bowling Green. Couldn't dominate a weak conference. Wtf was Utah thinking? Florida really dodged a bullet when he left before he could decimate their program with a third national title...

Undefeated for life or GTFO.

as much as I agree with what you were saying here...also got to look at it the other way as well. How many of the other candidates have won a Super Bowl?
