If you think it's Gruden....DON'T CLICK HERE

1) Shaw . Love the way his offense runs the ball. Physical defense. Very fitting of SEC
2) Jimbo. Don't like the ACC to SEC jump, but I think it will motivate this guy
3) Malzahn. Realistic and fits Hart's criteria. Knows how to beat Bama (don't say Cam)

I would list my hires in tiers. It is hard to rank them individually.

Tier 1:
Gary Patterson: If you threw the house at Gruden then turn around and throw the house at this guy. For less money than Gruden you could offer him something that he couldn't turn down. Plus give him whatever he wants to hire an elite staff.

Tier 2:
Butch Davis: Guy is a winner, and builds the talent. He can recruit, and recruit some more. No matter what happened on the field he would stock our roster with talent. That being said I think he is a good fit in the SEC as a coach. His NCAA stuff scares me.

Jimbo Fisher: Same feelings as Butch Davis.

Charlie Strong: I think he would struggle early on, but his ceiling is high IMO. He would be an ace recruiter, and I he seems like the kind of person people believe in. I think long term he would be the best in this group.

Tier 3:
Larry Fedora: Guy is a winner. He wins where ever he goes. For the price you would pay him you could give him the best staff in the country to make up for defensive issues, and recruiting.

If we miss on all of those I over pay for someone or hit the assistant coach ranks in the NFL. There is no scenario where I see Golden or Butch Jones as a good idea. I am also assuming Gundy isn't a legit option. He would clearly be #1 if so. Same for Shaw at Stanford.

I honestly am past caring at this point. If it's not Gruden, no one is going to excite me. We'll just get the same dog and pony show we've had with Kiffin and Dooley at the pressers:

- Put a fence around the state (recruiting)
- Strong assistant staff
- Best facilities in the country
- blah, blah, blah

Next year will be a disaster regardless...Oregon, Alabama, and Florida all on the road? Four of the current Top Five in the country (if you add Georgia at home)? Probable new QB? No chance. We'll be lucky if we finish with the same record as this year. We are much further away than most people think.

Thats why i believe we need to keep Jim Chaney , bc thats the only bright side, if we keep our offense. We dont have time to install a new defense and offense!!

I really doubt he's an option. THe guy turned down his alma mater, USC, when he was in what everyone knew was his last year with the Jags. Granted USC was facing sanctions and he was technically still coaching the Jaguars, but I still think there's really no chance. He's a pro guy and may get a superbowl ring this year which would open him up to NFL jobs again.

That being said, I'd take shaw, strong, or patterson.

I think we would have to make Strong the highest paid coach in the game for Louisville not to match.
I'm not certain whoever makes the decisions is willing to do that.

I doubt that. Plus Louisville can't match the facilities, resources, conference, and opportunity he would have at Tennessee. If it isn't Strong it is because we didn't want him.

I don't believe UT makes the decision of who is going to lead our football program based on the projected results of next year.

Thank you OP for an intelligent post. Dont see many around here...
My money is on Jimbo Fisher. Its a little "fishy" how most of his staff has accepted other jobs...

No problem, glad you enjoy it. It's nice reading realitic opinions and options on coaches that could actually happen.

I would be alright with Jimbo

What exactly am I missing that would make Roman or Shaw a realistic candidate for this job?

I just don't see the Stanford to TN connections.

Roman was a finalist for Penn State last year but he is from NJ. Kinda makes sense. What lures him to TN that he couldn't get elsewhere?

Shaw is at his alma mater. Why leave? Aside from money which Stanford would probably match. Same goes for Gundy although he isn't on your list.

I would agree with that assessment.

That's a good point my only rebuttle would be

1. Roman isn't a head coach, I'm sure he'd like to become one and it's not happening in SF anytime soon

2. Shaw - Stanford would not match $3-$4million a year, they have never paid their coaches well and didn't fight very hard to keep Harbaugh.

I am not on the gruden wagon either. All I want is someone with a winning record at their current school. I've heard BUtch Davis was an option. Any one else heard that?

Vegas odds on who the next Tennessee coach will be:
Butch Davis (3/1)
Larry Fedora (15/4)
Jim Tressel (9/2)
Dan Mullen (5/1)
Al Golden (21/4)
Jimbo Fisher (7/1)

Saw this on another post. Notice no gruden!

I am pretty sure Harbaugh made over 3 million a year. I could be wrong but I am sure I saw that somewhere.

I am on board with Butch Davis. No buyout and he could start today. Cleared by the NCAA so you know your coach is not bringing any issues. Good recruiter. Let's hire him for 3 million a year, and let him hire 2 great coordinators for a million each and get recruiting.

I really don't hate the idea. I would put him ahead of Strong or Golden.

+1

That is right about where I am. If Petrino is a no go, which most feel we won't even consider him then I think it should be Davis or Fedora. I am leaning toward Davis after reading up on him some today. He has a hell of a background of proven coaching/recruiting. Hart allows him to hire 2 big time coordinators and I think we would be set up great for 2013.

I would like Mullen or Strong my self.. Both have coached under Urben, and both have done a solid job at their new schools especially Mullen , Miss State was a train wreck when he got there and he has them middle of the pack in the SEC. With UT's resources I believe he could build an even better program here...

Strong the same did a very nice job at Louisville this year, he knows the caliber of teams in the SEC, as in he wouldnt be over whelmed by the magnitude of each game, being at Florida that is a really big program, and I think he could handle a job like UT.

Just my 2 cents who knows though what Hart's criteria is that he is really really looking for...
