iPhone

Had to get a new phone. Updated iPhone 5 to iOS 7 during snowstorm & ran into problems (Friday). During setup it would say invalid sim & wouldn't let me go further. Restored 5 times. Went to AT&T & swapped sim's no luck. Got online with AT&T support no luck. Online with apple support with no luck. Had already made appointment for Sunday at Apple store but that was 2 whole days so I just went. Although they couldn't squeeze me in at the Genius Bar I was able to trade in the faulty phone & get a new 5S. Gave me $252 for my 5 so I paid $60 for a new 5S.

I have a iPhone 4. Never thought about jail breaking it until now. Still don't know much of the technology world. I'm a outdoors type of guy.

Just a FYI. My plan is through H20 & I pay 60 a month for unlimited everything. About to start paying 30 for unlimited talk and text and 1 gig as I'm getting some wifi setup.

Does anyone else have a problem with "other" data accumulating too fast? I've had it get as high as 7 GB before. I swear my 4S has always had this problem which leads me to restoring to factory settings. I've had to do it at least 4 times in the past two years. I just restored a month or so ago and its already sitting at just under 3 GB. I've researched the hell out of it trying to alleviate it without restoring. Clearing emails, texts, safari cache and cookies, app data... nothing ever eliminates more than 300-500 MB (if I'm lucky).

Neither my wife's phone nor my iPad have this problem. I think I just have a defective phone. I really want to hold out for the iPhone 6 but it seems to be getting worse.

Do you restore from backup or set up as new?

New. Backup just brings the problem with it. That's what is so annoying. Every time I do it have to go in and readjust my settings (Contacts, Calendars and such I just pull back from iCloud).

The first thing apple will do is a dfu restore & tell you to set up as new.

Did that when I installed ios7 beta. Ive wondered if its something Im doing but my ipad doesnt have this problem. At this point Om just trying to hang tight unt the six vomes out. Rumors are they are moving the date back up to the summer.

Various apps are always working in ways to use more data, see Facebook videos in the news feed. Go check your apps individually and tinker with them to reduce data usage.

I think his issue is with his actual capacity consumption on the phone instead of data usage.

OK...I know it used to be that you could get the tethering to work but only for a little while. I know I asked this before, but if you jailbreak, do you have access to the ios apps as well? Does itunes match, mail, etc stay the same?

I've had tethering for many months and have never had an issue. However, I've never used it on a regular, continual basis. Primarily just here and there for football games on ipad.

As far as the iOS apps, you don't lose a single thing. Match, mail, music are all the same unless you download a tweak to intentionally change something. For example, I use BiteSMS for texting and it replaces the stock messaging app. You can go back to unjailbroken at any time with a restore.

Thanks...I jailbroke my original iphone years ago and had issues...so been hesitant to do it again for fear of "ruining" my phone. I would want "spot" tethering as well. Maybe for just a couple of hours at a time at most.

Is there a website that explains jailbreak for dummies with step by step instructions?

All you really have to do is back your phone up on cloud if your hesitant about it

This is a good place to start:

and will lead you here:

I have AT&T with unlimited data. I've heard of people getting letters telling them to stop, but I've never gotten one.

Just make sure you back everything up before starting in case you need to restore. When adding tweaks after the jb, go slow until you're comfortable and pay attention to any quirks. If you notice something doesn't seem right, just remove the last tweak and see if the issue is still there. Again, the worst outcome is that you have to restore.

Maybe I'll look into it tonight. I haven't backed up my iphone to my mac in awhile (although it likely does it automatically)

Question...I am currently at IOS 7.0.3. Should I upgrade to 7.0.6 before I do this and then use the latest version of envision?
