J.P. Prince Transferring to Tennessee?

Bruceball is based on being quick and tough - not necessarily tall. The style he plays is hard on a body and our guys have to able to take a beating from bigger players.

From what I remember about JP - he's not the fastest 6'6" guard, and he is a string bean.
He will have a year to bulk up. I am sure that by the time he is eligible, Pearl will have him ready to go. Bruce Pearl = God.

Wow, I didn't know Vandy won't take mid-semester transfers. Is January considered mid-semester? :dunno:

cant go wrong with getting this guy. Best case scenario- his full potential is realized and becomes a great player that fits into the system.

The MAIN reason we got this guy is for RECRUITING- Pearl himself said they are dedicated to keeping the best high school players in the state at Tennessee

J.P. Prince enrolls at UT

Posted Jan 17, 2007

Head basketball coach Bruce Pearl announced Tuesday that J.P. Prince has enrolled at the University of Tennessee and will join the Vols’ basketball team. A 6-foot-6 guard from Memphis, Prince will be eligible to play as a sophomore beginning in January 2008. He is allowed to practice with the team immediately.

Prince is transferring to Tennessee from the University of Arizona where he made three appearances for the nationally-ranked Wildcats this season. As a freshman last year he averaged 2.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 28 games.
At White Station High School in Memphis he led the Spartans to a 142-12 record and three state championships (2002-04). He was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Tennessee as a senior in 2005 after averaging 27.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game.

“We are very excited about J.P. Prince coming back to the state of Tennessee,” Pearl said. “He was an outstanding high school prospect from the same high school that brought us Dane Bradshaw. We are committed to keeping the best players from the state of Tennessee at home. Our style of play should enable him to reach his full potential.”

I agree that the recruiting angle probably played a huge role in our decision to take him.

No, he wouldn't. There's a very simple reason he couldn't get off the bench at Arizona: He can't play. Arizona wouldn't have Shakur logging the kind of minutes he is if Prince was anything other than practice fodder. An absolute waste of a scholarship.

:lolabove:

Sorry this is a strange bump. But interesting to read since Prince was such a key cog this season.

I appreciated this. A good way to start my day.

Opinions and belly buttons are about the same. There are other 'prognosticators' back in here who also badly missed. I wasn't a fan myself until the second half of this year.
I think JP matured a lot this year.

There are roughly 200 JUCO players available who would use JP Prince as a pinata.

I give you HatVol ladies and gentleman. A man who is absolutely spewing over with basketball intelligence. JP Prince, a guy who along with Wayne led us to our first elite 8, was an absolute waste of a scholarship according to him. Why does everyone look to Hat for advice, so far every prediction I have seen has been totally false.

Not to mention constant bashing of that coach that got us to the NCAA tournament the last 5 straight years

If he was a 6'6 guard that could run then no it would certainly not be a bad thing. But, what he is saying is that part of what got him a high rating coming out of high school was his height at the guard position. Well, in Pearl's system height is not the main attribute he wants his guard to have (no doubt it is an added advantage if they have both). First and foremost he wants them to be fast, quick, and athletic. Those things are not Prince's strong suit.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

They are predictions. Over the top, no doubt, but the guy still knows his stuff, generally. He said similar stuff about Bobby Maze and recanted quite a few times this year about them

At some point when someone misses over and over and over, you have to say that just because they buy steak and alcohol for coaches at events, they are not an expert.

If we bumped every thread where someone was wrong, we'd be swimming in old threads. As soon as people realize we're just imperfect people assembling together to discuss opinions and matters related to the University of Tennessee, we'd all be in better shape.

Look, there can't be anyone who has watched a UT basketball game in the last 2-3 seasons that hasn't groaned at the play of J.P. Prince one time (or more). But he turned out to be one of the leaders of this basketball team and everyone here knows without his play this season we might've had a much quicker exit or even a nonexistent tournament appearance.

But just like we have had recruiting *locks*, or that Troy Calhoun was our new head coach, or or that we were surely going to beat Wyoming in 2008, or that Crompton was going to be pathetic last year....people are wrong. If people were right about everything in sports and it was 100% predictable it would be a pretty boring investment.

If it was a once or twice occurance I would agree. I, however, have seen Hat proved wrong multiple times. All I am saying is his opinion is not worth as much as many claim. I'm not saying I'm a basketball guru, I have no real experience in the sport. What I am saying is, Hatvol bashes other guys for opinions when his are way off base most often. Yeah, the coach bashing gets old as well, but that sure as hell stopped once the elite 8 came aroundd.

My point is that who cares about this bolded part?

We're all individuals capable of making of making our own assertions and it's up to us reading the post to place our own worth of the opinion/news that was posted. We're seeing this in the Selby threads over there currently, people are losing it over rampant rumors and in the end, who really cares who is right and who is wrong?

Of course. He voices his opinion on just about everything. He's going to be wrong sometimes. I know Hat doesn't need me to stick up for him, and people will probably laugh at me rushing to his defense, but this bump is laughable. JP contributed to a nice run at the end of this year. Let's not pretend that his entire 3 years here consisted of exceptional basketball. Tennessee stepped it up when things got ugly this year. There are some guys who deserve credit for that, and Prince was one of them.

Like he said it would. He didn't think Pearl would be willing to change his style. He was willing to.
