J.P. Prince Transferring to Tennessee?

Recruiting Talk: J.P. Prince

In case you missed the note earlier, Tennessee is apparently still mulling over whether or not to get seriously involved in the recruitment of Arizona transfer J.P. Prince.

Prince is supposed to be in for a visit on campus Thursday and he and the staff will apparently meet and discuss the prospect of him joining the program. At this point the matter is definitely still unresolved, but the Vols are seriously looking at the option.

Prince needs to enroll in a school quickly to get started in the new semester, so the situation will need to get resolved in a hurry whether he winds up at Tennessee or another school.

Yeah, he's only got until Jan. 19th to enroll in spring classes.

Apparently there is somthing new on this today but I can read the board that it is on. No news is good news because it means we are not wasting a scholly on him.

I think many are concerned about his ability to play on the SEC level at this point.

Well, best case scenario... he helps alleviate Bradshaw's lost minutes and tempo. Maybe we can get to the point where we have a 9-10 man rotation where we really can "run teams straight out of the gym." That may give us another 2-3 Ws when our shooting isn't quite there.

I guess we'll get to see what this guy is made of. From the sound of things, Prince will need to step up his level of play or he's not going to do much at UT.

Work ethic is always the deciding factors in these scenarios... Scooter McFadgon looked the part his first year then disappeared. So, let's hope for the best.:dunno:

When looking back at the fantastic job Pearl did with the team last year, I'm not too worried about player development. If Pearl takes him, I guess there's a reason and I'm fairly certain that he'll get everything he can out of Prince.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Player development is not what I'm worried about on the coaching level. CBP has proven he gets the maximum effort out of his players (different coach, bad example with Scooter). Wait and see... absolutely. I just think CBP has already earned the right to expect a surprise player that will get him closer to showimg that his system can win anywhere.

That being said... his team will not reach full potential until he has all his own players. As much as I love watching him, this means without Lofton. His system involves no ONE player carrying the offensive load. Team effort. Team win. Ten men running all day long. He's getting close to being there.

However, with Lofton... if they get HOT... no one in the 65 is safe.

March is going to be soooooooooo much fun!!!!!

It will definitely be interesting when Lofton leaves. He's helped Bruce win a lot of games.

He played in the first two games for Arizona this season so I don't know if he will be eligible to play next season or not.

Depends on his appeal. Since he only appeared in 3 games before transferring and was out due to illness, if he wins his appeal he could be elgibile next fall and have 3 years left, if he loses his appeal he would be elgibile Jan. 1, 2008

As I said earlier. I saw this kid play alot in HS at White Station - same school as Bradshaw. I wouldn't be surprised if Bradshaw went to bat for JP.

He played under Terry Tippett - coaching legend in Memphis and really Tennessee with several state titles in class AAA. Tippett would not let a guy on the court with a bad work ethic.

I think things just went sour at AZ for this kid. He may not work out - but he has potential. My main issue, is we don't really need a 6'6" guard for CBP's style. And this kid will not bulk up like Bradshaw did - he has a pencil frame.

From what I am being told he will most likely not be eligible to play until January 1, 2008 as vol67 mentioned.

Well, it looks like we have decided to take a shot with him. I hope it works out. I think we will have to find some type of hybrid position for him to play at any type of efficient level. He is not quick enough to guard SEC guards or be effective in our press. He does have length which could be utilized. He is not fast enough to run our break the way we want to. Pearl will get the most out of him. Hopefully that will be enough for him to be productive.

How would having a 6'6" PG be a bad thing? His height will not negatively alter the way he plays the PG position.

If he was a 6'6 guard that could run then no it would certainly not be a bad thing. But, what he is saying is that part of what got him a high rating coming out of high school was his height at the guard position. Well, in Pearl's system height is not the main attribute he wants his guard to have (no doubt it is an added advantage if they have both). First and foremost he wants them to be fast, quick, and athletic. Those things are not Prince's strong suit.

Report: Prince headed to UT
By News Sentinel staff
January 16, 2007

CBS SportsLine.com reported this morning that former Arizona guard J.P. Prince has been invited to join Tennessee’s basketball program, and barring admissions snags Prince will enroll at UT with plans to play after the first semester next season. Reporter Gary Parrish based the story on an anonymous source.

The former Parade All-American from Memphis White Station appeared in only three games this season before announcing his plans to transfer. He averaged 2.2 points per game last season.

Prince, who visited UT’s campus over the weekend, would have two-and-a-half seasons of eligibility.

Bruceball is based on being quick and tough - not necessarily tall. The style he plays is hard on a body and our guys have to able to take a beating from bigger players.

From what I remember about JP - he's not the fastest 6'6" guard, and he is a string bean.
